RESEÑA ☕ Oliver Twist, de Charles Dickens Aunque si os fijáis en la foto, mi edición antigua se llama Oliverio Twist y la escribió Carlos Dickens. Porque sí, al parecer en los 60 era normal traducir los nombres propios (aunque no los apellidos, menos mal) ☕ ¿De qué trata? Oliver no nació destinado a una vida fácil. Tras una infancia de abusos y privaciones gracias a las nobles instituciones para huérfanos, consigue escapar y llegar a la ciudad de Londres. Allí se mezcla con todo tipo de personajes de los bajos fondos. Pero a pesar de ello, de todas sus vicisitudes, su bondad e inocencia se mantienen y le llevan a ganarse el corazón de quienes le rodean y conseguir encontrar su verdadero camino. ☕ Mi opinión: Esta es la primera novela de Dickens que leo, aunque al autor ya lo conocía por Cuento de Navidad, y a los personajes de este libro en concreto gracias a las muchas adaptaciones. Siendo la más reciente “Artful Dodger”, que disfruté muchísimo y fue lo que me animó a leer por fin este libro. Puedo decir que me ha gustado mucho, especialmente el tono crudo y violento, incluso cómico en ocasiones, con el que el autor critica la sociedad y sistema de la época en la que vivía. Señalando los abusos, maltratos, privaciones y prejuicios de los que eran víctima quienes menos tenían. Está claro que este libro es un producto de su época, y por ello tiene algunas cosas que en una novela actuar se podría criticar, como, por ejemplo: la falta de personajes femeninos y lo muy estereotipados que están los que salen. Y aún así creo que sigue teniendo temas que todavía son necesarios recordar y que ha envejecido bastante bien. Si tengo que ponerle una pega, es lo forzado que me parece ese final feliz, donde las casualidades han conseguido reunirlos a todos y se descubre que los obstáculos que pudiera haber no existen realmente. Sembra un po' superfluo esporre la trama di Oliver Twist di Charles Dickens, ma non do per scontato che tutti la conoscano quindi procedo. Oliver è un orfano, nato e cresciuto in un ospizio dove, insieme agli altri bambini, non riceve un trattamento adeguato. Viene ceduto come lavoratore bambino a una ditta di pompe funebri dalle quali scappa riuscendo ad arrivare a Londra; lì incontrerà una banda di giovani borseggiatori capitanata dall'anziano Fagin e inizieranno le sue avventure. Come molti romanzi di quegli anni, Oliver Twist uscì a puntate, per venir in seguto pubblicato in un unico volume. Io ho letto la traduzione di Bruno Amato che fa riferimento all'ultima edizione del romanzo e che presenta rimaneggiamenti di Dickens. Com'è tipico dei romanzi a puntate, è costruito in modo tale che ogni capitolo ti lasci la curiosità e la voglia di procedere con il successivo, e ci riesce molto bene! È difficile non entrare in empatia con il piccolo Oliver, anima pura e innocente in un mondo in cui tutto sembra corrotto e marcio, anche e soprattutto chi dovrebbe occuparsi di anime innocenti. Ma chi colpisce di più in questo romanzo, chi rimane più impresso, non è tanto Oliver nonostante ne sia protagonista, ma tutti i personaggi di contorno. Come mi è capitato di notare in altri romanzi di Dickens, sono tutti i personaggi che fanno la storia. Si muovono e respirano all'interno del romanzo, in una danza che sembra quasi teatrale. Si potrebbero togliere le scenografie, ma i personaggi ti saprebbero comunque dare un'idea di chi sono, dove si trovano e il loro scopo nella vita. Io per esempio ho impressa la figura del dottor Losberne, nonostante non compaia così tanto come altri, ma la sua caratterizzazione me lo rende memorabile. Come al solito è sempre più facile leggere i libri e perdercisi dentro, che poi parlarne. Le mie capacità limitate non rendono giustizia a questo romanzo. Se escapa a Londres con la mala suerte de caer en las redes del jefe de una banda de ladrones… 🍂Ilustra a la sociedad clasista victoriana, donde todo dependía de la familia de donde se venía y no de la valía de la propia persona. Además habla de la cruda violencia de los sectores menos afortunados. Para mi es un libro escrito para todos esos niños y niñas que sufrieron o sufren injusticias en sus infancias, que no son protegidos ni apreciados por las personas que debían cuidar de ellos. Les dice no estás sola, solo. Some recent discoveries, including a delightful mosaicist named @maudmilton a hilariously named greasy spoon, The Breakout (across the road from Pentonville Prison* in Barnsbury/Caledonian Road (not sure the RE lines), Thornton Heath (home to Crystal Palace FC), Balham (Northern line, seemingly a perfectly middle class suburb with a ginormous 1930s apt complex) & Wembley, where the English won the 1966 World Cup & the 1948 Olympics took place (first since Lene Riefenstahl’s 1936 Olympics in Berlin). Tomorrow’s adventures? Up to Epping Forest to see about some 1543 Tudor Hunting Lodge & for a Roding Valley wander (20+ km from Thornton heath!). And it’s all considered London! * I remember getting so excited that Pentonville prison, which appears in numerous Dickens novels, was still functioning (although also shocked they hadn’t moved prisons such as this or Brixton out of town)

In this wonderful and mysterious comedy of the dark arts, "The Ninth Gate", Polanski explores the world of rare books and the power of the most mysterious and forbidden volumes. Johnny Depp inhabits one of his greatest characters as the rare book dealer Dean Corso. He's a ruffled, unassuming figure on the margins of the "Art World" described by a fellow collector as being "Unscrupulous!... Thoroughly Unscrupulous!" This is one of Polanski's finest films. The story follows Corso as he's hired by a wealthy book collector by the name of Boris Balkan (Frank Langella) to authenticate a rare and very special book in his possession, "The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of the Shadows". There are only three surviving copies and Balkan is convinced that only one is authentic and all the others, are forgeries. The Director has incorporated all the elements that make for a rich and layered story. The plot based on "El Club Dumas", by Arturo Pérez-Reverte is fascinating as clues begin to reveal themselves while the story progresses. Cinematographer Darius Khondji imbues the movie with glorious gothic imagery creating an aura of mystery and danger along the way. Polish composer Wojciech Kilar's score is one of the most original and captivating film scores of the decade as it maintains a buoyant fun vibe even as the tension builds.
