I have forgotten to charge up my mini fan before bed! Which is a disaster while I have these hot flashes 🥵🥵 but luckily I have found a cable to plug it into and I can let the sweet breeze drift me off to sleep and I can somewhat pretend I'm in a hotel on a tropical island and my room has a big overhead fan 😂😂 I originally brought this fan for Ethan when there was that insane heatwave a few years ago. I used it while pregnant with Esmé during yet another heatwave. And now it's being used every night with no chance of it being switched off! When I introduce my insomnia clients to the “3P” model of insomnia, most of them find it useful in helping them understand why they have insomnia. What’s most useful about the model is that it helps you identify the PERPETUATING factors that are feeding your insomnia. Once you’ve identified those then you can start addressing how to get out of the habit of doing them. Something interesting about the perpetuating factors is that they seem like such logical/common sense things to be doing. For example, it seems logical to go to bed early if you’ve had a bad night of sleep. I did this myself during my own insomnia struggle, thinking I was doing the right thing. But I often wasn’t sufficiently sleepy when I got into bed so I laid there, anxious that I was still awake two hours later. And thus, I was unknowingly perpetuating my insomnia! Motherhood: Challenging. Exhausting. Beautiful. Rewarding. Impossible. Incredible. Every existing word (probably all the nonexistent words, too) are fitting for this insane journey. Normally bedtime is very easy for my 2-year old. She is always very tired and we have a consistent and predictable bedtime routine that helps her wind down and get comfy for the night. She even adjusted extremely well to the move and the change in location did t seem to affect her sleep at all. But from time to time she just has a rough time. And for whatever reason…tonight was one of those nights. She was so upset and I don’t know exactly what was wrong. Anytime I tried to set her down or leave the room she’d cry out “want your mama” which is her way of saying she needs me. So I sat down and she climbed in my lap, the crying stopped, and I just held her like this until she was ready to get in her bed. And with a word or two of reassurance she was fast asleep. And those moments are just so grounding. In the hustle and bustle of being a single full time mom with two jobs….she brings me back to earth. They both do. My sweet girls. My whole world. I’m so incredibly grateful for these perfect little blessings. #motherhood #parenthood #momlife #toddler #nighttimestruggles #grounded

Nighttime struggles are hard. I've taken to reading her old poetry when it's late and she can't sleep - after we've already done our usual bedtime story earlier in the evening. Some part of me hopes that one day she'll grow to love poetry as much as I do. Maybe on a rough day as an adult, she'll pull out these books and read them, thinking of childhood comforts. Maybe. It's not her fault she has the struggles she does. So I read, and she falls asleep to the soothing rhythm of old poetry. But still - I do wish for my evenings back. I miss my own cool down time. Ahh I can only imagine the celebrations that have occurred throughout England this evening!! Go team!! 🥳🥳🥳 I spent my evening supporting a lovely family through some sleep training, working towards different goals (sorry 😉) such as developing new sleep cues and sleep associations. With the long term goal of the little one being able to achieve sleep independently in around 4 weeks….or longer if they require a higher level of support. If your baby is 16+ weeks and frequently wakes in the the night, you're both getting broken sleep and probably not feeling like your best selves to take on the day. Waking 3 or more times in the night takes a noticeable toll on your mental and physical health.  As a certified child sleep consultant, and a mom, do I advise that you let your baby or toddler cry as a means to get better sleep?  The short answer is a resounding YES!!!  The long answer is yes, temporarily, as a means to an end to both of your sleep struggles.  Where does responding to your child's cries in the middle of the night fit in the role of sleep in infancy and early childhood development, psychology and education? Harvard University's @developingchildharvard Center on the Developing Child's "Serve and Return" research states that it is safe and even advantageous to have approximately 30% variation in adult responsiveness: "Some developmental scientists suggest that variations in adult responsiveness present growth-promoting challenges that may help young children recognize the distinction between "self" and "other," which is a NECESSARY next step for moving toward greater independence and increasing capacity for self-care and problem-solving." ⚠️Whether you are sleep training, or not, your child's crying around or during sleep times should not last longer than a few weeks, or 3 consecutive hours at a time. Please don't hesitate to DM me, or contact your pediatrician to re-examine your approach to sleep if this is happening in your home.

Did you experience postpartum rage? This is a great post highlighting the post about anger this week. It is a repost from@pump_momma_pump &@_happyasamother Anger is a distress signal. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Anger in the postpartum period is a red flag that is being overlooked and misunderstood. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Studies have shown that moms struggling with PPA/PPA are more likely to have symptoms of rage. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ This rage is often intense, hard to control and feels very uncharacteristic. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Here is a short excerpt from Jill Bucher of @todaysparent⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ -------⁣⁣ “Anger is indeed a normal emotion that we can all have, but being prone to anger can indicate there’s something going on that needs to change.” She [Christine Ou] adds that there is some evidence that shows that if a woman is both angry and depressed, the depression can last longer and be more intense.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The things that moms are angry about postpartum aren’t earth-shattering. Some feel trapped or helpless as they shoulder so many new responsibilities caring for a new baby while their own needs are left unfulfilled. Others find the reality of motherhood and the supports they receive don’t live up to their expectations. And many feel guilty that they aren’t the picture of the idealized self-sacrificing mother that’s upheld in our society.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ What’s more surprising is that no one’s thought to look at anger as a red flag for postpartum mood disorders sooner.
