Today the Institute for Popular Music @livuni in collaboration with @lcrmusicboard released the ReMap Report, “reporting on the Creative and Professional Experiences of Black Music Makers and Practitioners Living and Working in the Liverpool City Region”. Read the full report on the LCR Music Board Website. The report explores the experiences Black creatives in music are faced with in the city region and gives the following five recommendations: “1. Produce a clear Liverpool City Region Black music strategy to tackle direct and indirect racism. 2. Target and secure higher-level funding specifically aimed at elevating the profiles of LCR-based Black artists and industry professionals. 3. LCR Music Board to conduct a feasibility study on opening and operating a dedicated Black music hub space. 4. Allocate a portion of the Strategic Investment Fund Training and Development budget toward devising and delivering a professional network scheme for emerging LCR-Black music creators and industry professionals. 5. Last week we lost one of the last Bebop Jazz Legends. I bow my head with respect and admiration to have met and spent a good amount of time in his classes. I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting Barry "The Dr." He was an avid bowler and came to my bar to order a coke one day early '90's, he put his two forearms on the bar, looked at me and said, "who picks the music in that jukebox?" I said, "I do". He said, "Can you play #7202, I said sure, he said "hear that ? that's me on the piano", Sidewinder by Lee Morgan. I was shocked and enamored with respect and joy. Music is my life. I had suddenly found myself facing one the of the Jazz greats of our time, Barry Harris. He invited me to attend his Monday Night Classes at the Woodwind Shop on West 47 St. in Time Square. It was a life changing experience. He was "Precious". I wrote a song for him when he had his stroke soon after I met him. I called him "Precious". Barry was one of kind and so rich with spirit, soulful talent and innate mentorship. I am quite honored to have met him and deeply sad that he is gone but his music lives. Surely, his mark is quite infinite. Amazing human, jazz legend, inspirator and teacher. Godspeed Barry. 🎹 R.I.P. See you on the other side.🕊 P.S.
