Michael Bennett (@mosesbread72), founder and creative director of Studio Kër (@studioker), recently sat down with @essence magazine to talk about life after the @nfl, his journey into design and the “We Gotta Get Back to the Crib” showcase in Houston. The “WGGBTTC” exhibition presents new works originally conceived by Bennett and the late artist Imhotep Blot, spanning furniture, installation, and art, as well as photography by Pele-o-ali’ilagi (@pelepels). Thematically, the work highlights Bennett’s interest in the development of an African diasporic design language that traces the discovery of history through form. It also is the product of his interest, catalyzed by his activism, in the power of architecture and design to create Black agency, particularly through reinvigorating traditional typologies for gathering and communing, such as domestic and sacred spaces. Bennett tells ESSENCE: “For me We Gotta Get Back to the Crib means getting back to the essence and the principles of who we are culturally. Getting back to all those things that our forefathers did to put us in this position. The characters are credible and I can definitely see myself becoming emotionally invested in Hana and her family. I really enjoyed the book and am already excited for the next in the series. 📕📕BOOK REVIEW 📕📕 💡The Likely Suspects💡 Return To Blood by Michael Bennett The follow up to Better The Blood which I loved. Māori detective Hana Westerman, has returned home to Tata Bay and is living with her father, Eru. She previously worked for the Auckland Criminal Investigation Bureau and thought she had left that life behind but when her daughter Addison stumbles on the remains of a body her natural instincts kick in. Told in 3 timelines and from multiple POV’s, but mainly those of Hana and Kiri, and with a lot of Māori language, culture and legend - all of which is fully explained. Briefly, the body is that of a young Māori woman, Kiri Thomas, who went missing more than 4 years ago. Twenty years earlier one of Hana’s school friends was found in the same spot but her killer confessed and died in prison. However, Hana’s investigations soon leads her to a possible suspect, but it also gets her on the radar of people she really doesn’t want to come up against. A number of threads running through the book all of which are neatly tied together by the end. Some good twists that kept me guessing longer than usual and some good characters - I particularly like Hana and her father. I relished the detail of the Māori culture, really interesting, and it wasn’t overdone at the expense of the storyline. 🎉🎉Happy Publication Day🎉🎉 Return to Blood Michael Bennett I had only read this author as part of a James Patterson coauthored book. And years ago to boot. This was so much more than I was expecting. It’s full of cultural descriptions, family drama, mysteries and an ending I did not see coming. Set in a coastal New Zealand town, it brings an authentic atmosphere. There are Maori words throughout the book. With footnotes giving their explanation. There are also vivid descriptions of the area, so that I could picture and feel the location. This is book two in the series and I haven’t read book one, but had no trouble following along. I know these characters have a rich history of which the pertinent parts are explained. There are two mysteries set 20 years apart that each have ties making it personal for the book’s characters. I always love when a crime story is personal. It adds an extra layer to it. Hana is currently leading a simpler life since she left her life as an Auckland detective. But she is such a complex character. As much as I learned about her, I wanted to know even more. And she is surrounded by some great side characters. While I knew of the two deaths, the first third almost read like a literary novel.
