Thrilled to be featured in #fotoMAGAZIN#Animal portrait #wild world in the studio Lennette Newell's expressive portraits. Thank you, @manfred.zollner for a beautiful article @fotomagazin_de Cover photo is a #Galago aka Bush Baby from the family Galagidae primates from sub-Saharan Africa. They are #nocturnal, (probably obvious by their cute bug eyes) and they feed on fruits, insects, and even small birds, but a major component of the diet of most species is gum (tree exudate). This they extract by gouging holes in trees and scraping the bark, using their toothcombs (forward-tilted lower incisor and canine teeth). #Britannica#primates #animalkingdom#gallery #artsy #black&whitephotography #published #foto #editorial#photographymagazine#wildlife #wildlifephotography #animalsofinstagram #animallovers#BushBabies #LennetteNewell #animalPortraits

East African Crowned Crane, (Balearica regulorum) AKA #greycrownedcrane Gray crowned cranes are every bit as #majestic as their name suggests. One of 15 species of crane, these long-legged birds have gray bodies, white wings with brown and gold feathers, white cheeks, and bright red gular sacs underneath their chins. Most strikingly, a spray of stiff #golden #feathers forms a #crown around their heads. Crowned cranes—which also include the black crowned species (Balearica povonina) are the most ancient of the cranes, predating their relatives by tens of millions of years. The gray crowned crane is the national bird of Uganda and has two subspecies, the eastern #African gray crowned #crane and southern African gray crowned crane. Unfortunately, their distinctions have also put gray crowned cranes at risk: Considered #status symbols among the wealthy, these #birds are being captured and illegally sold in large numbers. That and other threats have prompted the International Union for #Conservation of #Nature to list the gray crowned crane as #endangered. Final posting from the #Animalia series ~ recipient of 2024 Texas Photographic Award Finalist. @Oliviaparkerphotographs juried the #Photographyaccolades#wildlife#aves#habitat#conservation#bnw#photography#photographyawards#exhibition#black&whitephotography #animals#animalportraits#fine-art #photographyAWARDS #LennetteNewell ©Lennette Newell @b.n.w.photos @bwphotomag #birdsofinstagram #birdphotography

#Three-toed #Sloth (Bradypus) The sloth is the world's #slowest #mammal, so #sedentary that algae grows on its furry coat. The plant gives it a greenish tint that is useful camouflage in the trees of its Central and South American rain forest home. All sloths are built for life in the treetops. They spend nearly all of their time aloft, hanging from branches with a powerful grip aided by their long claws. (Dead sloths have been known to retain their grip and remain suspended from a branch.) Sloths even sleep in trees, and they sleep a lot—some 15 to 20 hours every day. Even when awake they often remain motionless. At night they eat leaves, shoots, and fruit from the trees and get almost all of their water from juicy plants. #Deforestation and human population growth is responsible for sloth habitat loss. Since sloths primarily live in the lush, verdant rainforests of Central and South America, keeping their #environment intact is crucial for their #survival. Another image from the #Animalia series ~ recipient of 2024 Texas Photographic Award Finalist. @Oliviaparkerphotographs juried the #Photographyaccolades#wildlife#habitat#conservation#bnw#photography#photographyawards#exhibition#slothlove#black&whitephotography #animals#hangupsidedown#animalportraits#fine-art #photographyAWARDS#LennetteNewell ©Lennette Newell @b.n.w.photos @bwphotomag #tropical #animalsofinstagram #animal

They are also able to close their nostrils to keep out sand. This is not a Bactrian Camel; they are Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. When vocalizing, the siamang can produce two different kinds of notes using its throat sac: a deep boom (when it sings into the sac with its mouth closed) and a loud "wow" (when it sings into the sac with its mouth opened). The deep boom sound carries farther in the forests than the high-pitched wow sound. Siamang also make a bark-like vocalization. The set calls are repeated one after another. They start off slowly and increase in speed. #Metamorphosis hand-crafted platinum palladium print is on exhibit @photobasel @FotoNostrum #Gallery, booth 10. "Metamorphosis #1 edition 1/1 #Platinum/Palladium print hand colored with colored pencils Printed on Arches Platine 310 gsm Sheet size 28 cm x 38 cm / 11 X 15 inches Description: Monarch #butterflies with a #body-painted female wearing hand-made wings and constructed feathered hair. When viewed closely, the butterfly wings were constructed from a chiffon-type material giving the same effect as butterfly wings. The #photograph shows this effect, and colored pencils were used for the coloring to accentuate this texture. The monarch butterflies were #photographed in a small climate-controlled set environment and set free within six hours of delivery from an indigenous species butterfly breeder. Metamorphosis 1/1 print mimics the process of transformation in stages. The #photoshoot consisted of the construction parts and body painting, then finally the photo shoot, as did the sourcing of butterflies to set for a quick and healthy release so as not to interrupt their short life cycle. I composited the three images together, I then made several digital negatives to print in the platinum palladium process, which lends itself to hand coloring without damage to the print surface and centuries of enjoyment. It is practically impossible for this print to fade even under the most daunting of environments. I used #dreamy colors to finish the piece, adding a white texture in the upper left-hand corner to keep depth and interest in the area with butterflies while leaving the bottom right corner stark black to keep the interest on all butterflies. The production of making this print from start to finish took weeks with many different skills. With great satisfaction, I present this journey to you as you contemplate your metamorphic #life stages." @ethertongallery @obscuragallerysf #PhotoBasel #FotoNostrum #LennetteNewell #photographyart #fine-art #platinumpalladiumprint #handcolored #handcrafted#gallery #painting #contemporaryart #artsy #artoftheday #art ©Lennette Newell All rights reserved

#Cheetah with like #body-painted #female, ONE capture I m thrilled to be exhibiting at @photobasel with @fotonostrum Gallery. I am delighted to introduce my platinum/palladium prints. My commitment to creating an image is a sequence of thought, planning, and production. This journey fabricates an environment and circumstances, hopefully leading to a natural, spontaneous, raw capture. This attentive practice continues in platinum/palladium processing, constructing digital negs, calculating chemicals, and deciphering the best paper textures and weight. The platinum (and sister element palladium) element is incredibly stable against chemical reactions that may degrade the print and are even more stable than gold. Cheetah 1 AP 1/2 Platinum/Palladium Print Printed on Arches Platine 310 gsm Sheet size 28 cm x 38 cm / 11 X 15 inches #photobasel#fotonostrum#photography#exhibition#platinumpalladium#alternativeprocess#wildlife#metamorphosis#artgallery #contemporaryart #artcollection #contemporaryartist #fineartphotography #artexhibition #photoart #artshow#LennetteNewell ©Lennette Newell All rights reserved

#BlackBird landscape #birdscape For a long time, birds thrived, ruling the skies and playing vital roles in #ecosystems around the world. But the tables have turned, with these creatures now among the most at risk of disappearing forever. For millennia, the planet’s birds have been an integral part of the ecosystem, playing important roles in pollination, seed dispersal, and controlling insect populations. Sadly, human activity has put many species of birds in danger. The world’s population has more than doubled since 1960, and as our demand for resources increases, so does the pressure on the #environment. #conservation#flock of #birds photographed at Bosque Del Apache @friendsofbosquedelapache #landscape #NewMexico#BosqueDelApache#Aves Lennette Newell #Photographer @bda_naturestore @audubonsociety @bwphotomag #birdsofinstagram #birding #birdphotography#wildlife #wildlifephotography#gallery #contemporaryart #artoftheday#artsy#art#LennetteNewell ©Lennette Newell All Rights Reserved

ROAR! #lion (Panthera leo) Lions are the world's most social felines. They live in groups of related females, called #prides, which may comprise several to as many as 40 individuals, including adults, sub-adults (between the ages of 2 and 4) and cubs, plus one or more resident males. Abundance of prey availability plays a significant role in the size of a lion pride. Pride mates associate in sub-groups within the pride. #lionseyes#photography#africa #wildlife #cats #animal #wildlifephotography#conservation #nature #environment#LennetteNewell#eyes ©Lennette Newell All rights reserved

#Lion on rock looking back, #photographed in the African Savanna Photograph my Parallel Evolution series Lions are the apex predator of the #African #savanna. They play the critical role of managing large herbivore populations of buffalos, impalas, zebras, and even elephants and giraffes. In a balanced #ecosystem, the number of herbivores needs to be kept in check. If there are too many herbivores, the vegetation is overgrazed and habitats inevitably degrade. Lions help maintain healthy and resilient herbivore populations. The natural course is that lion prides hunt and kill the weakest of the herd—typically those that may be afflicted with parasites, disease, or are feeble from a hereditary defect. Lions prevent the spread of afflictions and ensure improved genetic health in ungulate populations. When lions disappear, smaller carnivores in the food chain flourish. This is problematic because these carnivores cannot regulate large herbivore populations and can also lead to disease transmissions. A case in point took place in Ghana after a systemic culling of lions. Thereafter, olive baboons proliferated, and intestinal parasites soon plagued other animals and nearby villagers. As a #keystone species and apex predators, #lions are crucial to the #habitats they occupy. Without lions, disease spread is likely across species, and vast savanna grassland ecosystems would disintegrate into dysfunctional, barren landscapes impacting all life within. @lionrecovery lionrecoveryfund.org #bigcats#feline#wildlife#cats#safari#animal #wildlifephotography#artsy #gallery#LennetteNewell#photographer ©Lennette Newell

So pleased my Parallel Evolution Series won 1st in Wildlife in the 19th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards on exhibit now @fotonostrum #Artist Statement Cavemen and women chose to adorn their walls with animal drawings, and since that time, our cavemen relationship with the planet has shifted. In Lennette’s parallel evolution, the elephant, lion, and zebra landscapes were photographed in Tanzania. These animals are located in National Parks and are protected as long as they do not travel out of boundaries and into unprotected poacher territory. In their natural environment, they are subjected to numerous visitors from all over the world. This rigorous interaction of land rovers is commonplace and can interrupt important activities, such as hunting for food, traveling to a water source, and resting. Lennette observed that humans now long for these natural encounters, although their presence can nonetheless have detrimental effects. Humans have been destroying natural habitats steadily over time, and even as ecotourism aims to promote animal protection, we are nonetheless encroaching on their privacy. However, such visits seem to be the only way to provide the monetary funds that keep some animal's livelihoods intact. Across the globe, Lennette photographed the same domesticated species in Los Angeles, CA, in a large studio. These intimate portraits show the same animals, but ones accustomed to their human family, enjoying all the comforts of being fed and protected but ignorant of their #natural environment. They have bonded closely with their human companions, animals, and each species values the other. The juxtaposition of these animals' lifestyles leads us to a time and place unlike any other in history. These two parallel environments define the adaptability of all creatures as our connection to the natural world continues to change, mostly due to our own decisions and actions. #wildlife #JuliaMargaretCameronAwards #photographyAwards #accolades @natgeo @wildlifeartjh @bwphotomag @icp #BWphotography #naturephotography #natgeo #conservation #animals #photographer #photoshoot #blackandwhite #bnw #womenphotographers #fineartphotography #monochrome #LennetteNewell

#Photographed @AudubonInstitue #Sumatran #Orangutan#CriticallyEndangered The Sumatran orangutan is almost exclusively arboreal, living among the trees of tropical rainforests. Females virtually never travel on the ground and adult males do so rarely. Sumatran orangutans are reported to have closer social ties than their Bornean cousins. This has been attributed to mass fruit on fig trees, where groups of Sumatran orangutans can come together to feed. Adult males are typically solitary while females are accompanied by offspring. Historically, the Sumatran orangutan was distributed over the entire island of Sumatra and further south into Java. The species' range is now restricted to the north of the island with a majority in the provinces of North Sumatra and Aceh. Of the nine existing populations of Sumatran orangutans, only seven have prospects of long-term viability, each with an estimated 250 or more individuals. Only three populations contain more than 1,000 orangutans. Orangutans that were confiscated from the illegal trade or as pets are being reintroduced to Bukit Tigapuluh National Park. They number around 70 and are reproducing. Information from WorldWildlife.org @world_wildlife #primates#animals#animalkingdom#biodiversity#oneearth#sustainability#photography#animalphotography#LennetteNewell#Endangered ©Lennette Newell
