Jenkin van Zyl’s « Palace of Wasted Footsteps » solo exhibition for Gallery Weekend Berlin, revisits the intense world-building of « Surrender, » his project that draws upon his research into 1930s American dance marathons and the ephemeral world of (Japanese) love hotels, hourly hotels for rendezvous into the night. At the intersection of history and fantasy, van Zyl’s sculptures—five competing doppelgängers for intimate dance duos—explore the brutal beauty of endurance and the thin line between competition and survival. They are compelled by a mysterious energy drink, called limitless growth, pushing them ever to the brink of bodily collapse, despair and grace dialectically locked into a kind of « rat race » of self-imposed sel-obsessed success or community, endurance versus surrender, they can not go on, they must go on. Hua International is pleased to announce the opening of Jenkin van Zyl’s ( @jenkinvanzyl ) solo exhibition “Palace of Wasted Footsteps,” on Friday April 26th 6-9pm, which marks the next chapter in his world-building within the Surrender project, for the occasion of Gallery Weekend Berlin. In new installations, of hand painted resin sculptures, van Zyl continues to delve into extreme experiences and the quest for personal freedom, drawing inspiration from the public endurance spectacles of 1930s American dance marathons. The exhibition intertwines themes of productivity, escapism, and community, challenging notions of individuality and collectivity while reflecting on contemporary anxieties and desires. It’s unclear whether these doppelgängers compete out of an insatiable yearning; or from their desire for escapism, community, oblivion, or plain victory in a marathon. Disregarding these concerns, the figures are propped up by mountainous plinths of Limitless Growth; a mysterious energy drink that fuels these contestants and propels them ever-forward. In Everybody Loves a Winner (ONE-HALF-OF-GRACE), a grinning trophy teases victory from behind a locked door and a series of apartment buzzers, P.E.E.P. buzzer vi-xx, punctuate the space. Machines of Love is a terrifying yet fascinating spectacle shown in a plane that appears to have crashed into the building. In his work, van Zyl takes on the role of director, producer, costume designer, actor and more. His versatile talent generates a multidisciplinary practice that includes film, performance, writing and sculpture. Van Zyl's work combines these disciplines in hallucinatory, immersive installations, typically centred around film. PHENOMENA is the third exhibition curated by @elderscollectief . The abandoned school building of Stella Maris that forms the backdrop was erected in 1911, and can be visited for the last time on this occasion before its conversion into residential real estate.The collective invited a selection of international artists, four of which present their work for the first time in Belgium. Through a cycle of contemporary installations with an immersive character, they invite the spectators on an expedition through the hidden layers of the building. ELDERS continues the site’s original function as a space where the worldviews were shaped, with a stimulating experience that explores the complexity of perception and corporeality. PHENOMENA explores various alternative perspectives, ranging from transhumanistic futures and elusive physical principles to improbable dream worlds. Enigmatic experiences evoke questions of matter and existence, in addition to underlying reflections on our own perception and relativity. They indicate that what we consider as reality are actually for a large part constructions of our own minds, making the ultimate reality intangible. For the opening of 'Phenomena' on March 3, we have several scoops, including Isabelle Andriessen being shown to the general public for the first time in Belgium. With her crystallizing sculptures, Isabelle Andriessen takes the viewer to a distant future in which human presence fades, but where countless materials remain that will outlive humanity. She evokes a vast technology, whose organic forms and chemical processes allow the emerge of cybernetic life forms. They challenge the visitor to think about the impact of human activity on the planet and to contemplate beyond the boundaries of time. Jenkin van Zyl’s works stimulate the dialogue with ancestral symbols rooted in our unconscious and visive archive, attending to their demystification: a non-orthodox relationship played on the destruction and the inner split of our beliefs. While the viewer might have the impression of looking at something familiar, albeit potentially distant, van Zyl›s works reveal the audience’s unconscious. For the exhibition ‘Phenomena’, 9 artists with diverse approaches to reality and creation are invited to inhabit a hidden domain. The old Stella Maris school, founded in 1911 by the Brothers Van Dale is located in the Boerderijstraat 69a, Kortrijk. The building will be opened to the general public for the last time before it is developed as part of a real estate project. Jenkin van Zyl’s exhibition ‘Dance of the Sleepwalkers’ is on view at the gallery until 2 March 2024. The show draws from evocative allusions to dance marathons – gruelling endurance competitions that gained popularity in the US during the Great Depression – at times referred to as “The Dance of Death”, “The Innocent Jail” and “Dance of the Sleepwalkers”. Throughout the exhibition space, a series of sculptural apartment buzzers lists rooms available within a hotel. Tonight: Join the opening reception of Oren Pinhassi’s ‘After Pleasure’ and Jenkin van Zyl’s ‘Dance of the Sleepwalkers’ at Edel Assanti, 6-8pm. ‘After Pleasure’ explores the aftermath of desire-fulfilment, when all longings have been satiated. Evoking living ecologies, the self-replicating forms of Pinhassi’s sculptures echo the rhythms of organic and built environments, insinuating a symbiotic relationship between body, ideology and ecosystem. In ‘Dance of the Sleepwalkers’ van Zyl returns to the practice of world-building that occurs within fringe subcultural communities. Through the six works on paper, van Zyl explores the tension between ideas of collectivity and belonging, and the divisive impact of neoliberal frameworks that often pit individuals against each other. In van Zyl’s new suite of drawings, the artist returns to the practice of world-building that occurs within fringe subcultural communities – the focus of his recent film installation 'Surrender' (2023). Quick trip into Liverpool last week and my continued quest to find art galleries. Great visit to FACT to see 'Surrender' by Jenkin Van Zyl - weird and disturbing and still making me think about our society - and 'Earth A.D.2 (2023) BY Uma Breakdown - much more up teenage boys street....sick they said. I am just grateful to be able to see contemporary art as not so much to see in the Hiighlands. 💥 A big welcome to the inimitable Jenkin van Zyl on the occasion of ‘Hemispheres’! jenkinvanzyl (b. 1993) is an artist and filmmaker based in London, with a multidisciplinary practice comprising film, performance, drawing, writing and sculpture. Van Zyl received their BA hons Fine Art sladeschool (2016) and postgraduate degree from the royalacademyschools London in 2021 where they were the recipient of the RA Gold Medal Prize. At jenkinvanzyl hands, fantastical communities enact bewildering rituals that play with the magnificence and limitations of the body; of stunt cowboys in a foley sound studio, of ghouls breeding cakes in aircrafts or of inflatable beasts hazed at a desert fortress. Here, binaries of the front and back-stage, self and other, desire and revulsion, and ruin and repair are discarded in favour of multiplicity, instability, and deviance. Van Zyl notes his interest in spaces which slip between paradise and hellscape; where microcosms of the problems encountered in the ‘real world’ crop up in worlds which are built to escape them. #Hemispheres #JenkinvanZyl
