Jenkin van Zyl’s « Palace of Wasted Footsteps » solo exhibition for Gallery Weekend Berlin, revisits the intense world-building of « Surrender, » his project that draws upon his research into 1930s American dance marathons and the ephemeral world of (Japanese) love hotels, hourly hotels for rendezvous into the night. At the intersection of history and fantasy, van Zyl’s sculptures—five competing doppelgängers for intimate dance duos—explore the brutal beauty of endurance and the thin line between competition and survival. They are compelled by a mysterious energy drink, called limitless growth, pushing them ever to the brink of bodily collapse, despair and grace dialectically locked into a kind of « rat race » of self-imposed sel-obsessed success or community, endurance versus surrender, they can not go on, they must go on. Hua International is pleased to announce the opening of Jenkin van Zyl’s ( @jenkinvanzyl ) solo exhibition “Palace of Wasted Footsteps,” on Friday April 26th 6-9pm, which marks the next chapter in his world-building within the Surrender project, for the occasion of Gallery Weekend Berlin. In new installations, of hand painted resin sculptures, van Zyl continues to delve into extreme experiences and the quest for personal freedom, drawing inspiration from the public endurance spectacles of 1930s American dance marathons. The exhibition intertwines themes of productivity, escapism, and community, challenging notions of individuality and collectivity while reflecting on contemporary anxieties and desires. It’s unclear whether these doppelgängers compete out of an insatiable yearning; or from their desire for escapism, community, oblivion, or plain victory in a marathon. Disregarding these concerns, the figures are propped up by mountainous plinths of Limitless Growth; a mysterious energy drink that fuels these contestants and propels them ever-forward. In Everybody Loves a Winner (ONE-HALF-OF-GRACE), a grinning trophy teases victory from behind a locked door and a series of apartment buzzers, P.E.E.P. buzzer vi-xx, punctuate the space. Van Zyl’s recent presentations include solo presentations Surrender, FACT, Liverpool, and Edel Assanti, London; Machines of Love, Tramway, Glasgow; Vore, Rose Easton, London; and selected group presentations at Barbe à Papa, CAPC, Bordeaux; Transmediale, Kunstraum Kreuzberg, Berlin; Kiss my Genders, Hayward Gallery, London Pictures by : @joeclark.photo #gwb2024 #jenkinvanzyl #huainternational #exhibition #artcollector #queer #sculpture #dancemarathon #berlin #beijing #gallery #galleryweekendberlin #fantasy

Hua International is delighted to announce its forthcoming exhibition, ‘The Night Eats All Objects’ by Lea von Wintzingerode, opening on April 25, 5-9pm An evolving experiment salon initiated by German-born and Berlin-based painter, artist, and experimental sound musician Lea von Wintzingerode, which weaves together painting, collage, sound, social sculpture and parallel projects. Von Wintzingerode has conceptualized this exhibition as an extension of her belief that painting and sound art are inherently social practices. The show includes an ongoing series of listening sessions and gatherings designed to foster interaction and discourse among attendees. Collaborating artists Paul DD Smith and Adrijana Gvozdenović, along with sound artists Filipe Lippe aka Mr. Cosmic Slop, have been invited to contribute with their work to the space. #gwb2024 #leavonwintzingerode #huainternational #exhibition #artcollector #collage #music #sound #sounddesign #berlin #beijing #pauldd #adrijanagwozdenović #filipelippe #galleryweekendberlin #experiment #painting #performance #cabaret #photography #fashion

In his upcoming solo, Jenkin van Zyl presents a series of sculptures of competing doppelgängers - conceived between polychromed votive sculpture, an upscaled Warhammer figurine or bootlegged merchandising - anchor us in a marathon. Each couple dances in a state of strange grace and despair, pivoting on the pressure point at which barriers between the original and the copy, between self and other, collapse. Their bodies are shown curlicues beyond fatigue, draped over one another in dying embraces or contorted in gladiatorial display and professional finesse. #gwb2024 #jenkinvanzyl #huainternational #exhibition #artcollector #queer #dance #dancemarathon #berlin #beijing #gender #gallery #voguing #galleryweekendberlin #fashion #makeupaddict

Working with form and color to elicit a psychological and emotional effect, Gicquel mines the “affordance” or potential activation latent in objects, personal memory, and institutional history. #currentexhibition #beijing „Stairway to Seven“ by Vivian Caccuri @viviancaccuri . Thanks to all the love and support, we’re extending our exhibition until March 2nd! Your enthusiasm has been incredible, and we‘re excited to keep the art vibes going. 2 NOVEMBER 2023 - 2 March 2024 Hua International is pleased to present Stairway to Seven, Brazilian artist Vivian Caccuri’s first solo exhibition in China. Caccuri’s objects, installations, and performances investigate the physical, affective, and sociopolitical dimensions of sound, exploring how music and movement are transformed into embodied experience. Featuring new weavings, sculpture, and sound works, Stairway to Seven completely transforms Hua International’s Beijing location. The exhibition’s scenography draws upon the painted and physical architectures of Adolphe Appia and Giorgio di Chirico to elicit the dreamlike, emotional atmosphere that music creates. Riffing on the slender, rounded arches present in many of di Chirico’s paintings, Caccuri has eliminated hard angles and corners in the exhibition space by creating an “infinity cove” structure that imparts a sense of expansive, continuous space. Similar to the act of deeply listening to music, being enveloped by sound, Stairway to Seven becomes an immersive space that surrounds the viewer and implicates them in its choreography. #soloexhibition #798 #viviancaccuri #huainternational

#currentexhibition “3” @alfredo_aceto 3 Alfredo Aceto 1 Dec 2023 - 10 Feb 2024 Hua International Berlin Alfredo Aceto works across sculpture, film, photography and installation to integrate abstract art with abstracted bodies or elements of figuration, often himself, to explore themes of identity, power, masculinity, and social systems, reflecting on the complexities that have shaped our time. 3 brings together works from various stages of the artist's oeuvre, providing a survey into his rich and diverse body of work spanning his first ten years of practice. His works, including new pieces for this exhibition, reexamine social structures, using languages found in mass-media and communication as well as the grammar of post-modern abstraction to re-examine social structures, thereby altering our experience and perception of societal frameworks. In merging elements from various phases of his career, the exhibition creates a conceptual continuity in his practice rather than simply a formal one. Juxtaposing diverse narratives, the works delve into economics, sociology, power systems, and the exploration of gender and dominant models. In the film, Italie CGN, Aceto revisits childhood, attempting to undergo a metamorphosis in which he embodies and performs as if he is a ship opperated by the company Compagnie Générale de Navigation on Lake Geneva (CGN) inside a choreography filmed at the MCBA (Musee Cantonal des Beaux Arts de Lausanne). Taking the Mise-en-scène of the film from the promotional ads of the company, the shots adopt a coded version of the artist hand acting as the piston engines and iconic paddle wheels, while the sound of the film is created by the artist's gargling imitating the wake of the ship. #currentexhibtion „Lace Under Top Loop Once“ @gordon_hall_ Lace Under Top Loop Once Gordon Hall 9.15-11.18.2023 Hua International Berlin @mikceyy @michellemmoura @leaaaahkatz Hua International is pleased to present Lace Under Top Loop Once, Gordon Hall’s first solo exhibition at the gallery following their solo booth in the Statements section of Art Basel. Hall’s works recreate and “unmake” objects that typically recede into the background, recasting commonplace yet peripheral things in ways that compel those who witness them to consider the poetics of the everyday. Their sculptural works draw our attention to the performative capacity of objects, and how motionless things might nonetheless possess a choreographic language. Hall’s works move beyond the so-called “universal” discourses of minimalism and abstraction to foster a mode of looking and relating that is intimate and variable, gesturing towards the many lives lived with and through objects. Lace Under Top Loop Once is accompanied by a suite of performances made in collaboration with Leah Katz, Mickey Mahar, and Michelle Moura and performed over two days in the gallery with Gordon Hall. This movement originates from the sculptures and takes place on, with, and around them, responding to the desires of this group of objects as they are arranged in this specific space. Consisting of ten short pieces— four solos, three duets, two trios, and one quartet—the performances of Lace Under Top Loop Once occur at unannounced times during their three-hour presentations and take place regardless of whether there is an audience present to see them. Viewers may find themselves arriving to an otherwise empty gallery to find a performance already underway, or waiting with the sculptures for one to begin. These ephemeral, intimate, and introverted occurrences remain part of this body of work after their disappearance, reminding us of the many lives of objects beyond our human demands. Hua International is pleased to announce the representation of Alfredo Aceto, who joins the gallery with an inaugural solo exhibition in December 2023 at the Berlin location. @alfredo_aceto Alfredo Aceto (b. 1991, Turin, Italy) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Geneva, Switzerland whose practice includes film, installation, photography, text, and sculpture, and is mainly concerned with the body and his own biography. Using among others sculpture, film, and sound, he creates spaces suspended between fiction and reality. His environments are places to live, in which one can find a sort of melancholy, artificial time alteration, and image saturation. The objects he produces are traces, functional elements for the construction of the space where the blurred boundaries between his personal timeline and the collective one express the way chronology can be manipulated. Curator Cédric Fauq has stated “The timeline – more than time itself – is precisely Alfredo Aceto’s primary obsession. Concerned with the way stories are narrated, his exhibitions are always finding a way to tell a story without telling one.” Aceto attended the Fine Arts at ECAL (École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne) and MSA^, The Mountain School of Arts, Los Angeles. His work has been exhibited in many international surveys, including DOC!, Paris, Museo Pietro Canonica, Rome, Museo del 900, Milan, Centre d’Art Contemporain de Genève, Geneva, Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, St. Gallen or Kunsthaus Glarus, Glarus. Aceto is currently teaching at ECAL in Lausanne. In 2019 he was the recipient of the prestigious Leenaards Culture Grant from the Fondation Leenaards. In 2022 he was nominated for Swiss Art Awards in Basel. #huainternational #alfredoaceto

#upcoming #siheyuan „Paternal Milk“ by Manuel Forte Opening: Fri, 15 Sep from 5pm to 9pm. Paternal Milk Manuel Forte 9.15-11.18.2023 Siheyuan, Hua International, top floor, Potsdamer Str. 81B, 10785 Berlin Manuel Forte's solo exhibition, Paternal Milk, is set to open during Berlin Art Week 2023 as part of a series of curatorial projects at Hua International's Siheyuan space. The exhibition will feature entirely new paintings and installations. At its core, the exhibition explores the poetics of space, drawing on memories of childhood homes, and the poetics of relation, spanning cross-cultural and cross-generational connections. Forte himself stated, "The show is about family and parenthood," emphasizing the central role of familial bonds in his work. Siheyuan is a para-curatorial project by Hua International. Located on the second floor of the gallery’s Berlin location, Siheyuan understands itself as a platform for activities that fall outside of the parameters of the gallery’s program: a space of experimentation, of exchange, and spending time together. Regular talks, screenings, and discussions will take place here that expand and enrich but do not directly relate to our exhibitions, as well as pop-up shows organized by represented artists and curated by Hua International’s international network of friends and collaborators. The name Si he yuan is a Chinese term designating a structure surrounded by courtyards, an architectural form typical of our second home-base in Beijing and resonating with our gallery’s Berlin location in the Mercator Höfe. Drawing upon the rich, interactive spirit of the courtyard, Hua International’s Siheyuan project will provide an informal, dialogically driven space to encounter art and ideas. @berlinartweek @galleryweekendberlin #soloexhibition #manuelforte #huainternational #berlinartweek #berlingalleryweekend

Distributed across three rooms, sculptures in wood, concrete, paper, and projected light draw us into the gaps between events when we pause in anticipation of the next thing. Born from furniture, Hall’s objects invite us to question their uses, histories, and orientations. Throughout the exhibition, the sculptures will be put to use by performers who present movement that originates from the objects and taking place on, with, and around them. Rafael Domenech (Born 1989 in La Havana, Cuba, lives and works between Miami and NYC, USA) is at the forefront of a new generation of artists that are redefining the exhibition experience. He explores notions of architecture, urban design, and contemporary material productions to develop and produce different typologies of objects and spaces, such as experimental publications, pavilions, installations, and public programs. Domenech’s architectural interventions intersect publishing methodologies such as cutting, redacting, revising, and circulation as research tactics to amplify his interest in the exhibition model as an active machine for production rather than a repository space. - Rafael Domenech (nato nel 1989 à La Havana, Cuba. Hua International is delighted to be part of this year’s @palai_project it runs until August 26, 2024 "Palai" is a group exhibition taking place for the second time this summer at Palazzo Tamborino Cezzi in Lecce, Italy. The project is organized by Balice Hertling who invited ten galleries from around the world to participate to the exhibition. — In her works, Vivian Caccuri emphasizes the ear and its shapes due to its direct connection to hearing and the plurality of forms it can assume. Alfredo Aceto (Born in 1991 in Turin, Italy, lives and works in Lausanne, Switzerland) works at the frontiers of the vectors used to define a thing and an identity. Interested in the nature of the object, he explores its attributes in order to re-conceive it in some new form that expands its narrative possibilities. Using, among others, sculpture, film and sound, Alfredo Aceto creates spaces suspended between fiction and reality. His environments are places to live in which one can find a sort of melancholy, artificial time alteration and image saturation. The objects he produces are traces, functional elements for the construction of the space where the blurred boundaries between his personal timeline and the collective one express how chronology can be manipulated. His work arises from the will to create a place that would mix the various strata of a linear form of time, turning into a platform from which signs of different ages emerge.
