some flowers, some stems Emil Urbanek Open: Wed-Sat, 2-6pm until April 27. Weserstraße 46, Berlin 12045 In their second solo exhibition at Weserhalle, Emil Urbanek opens portals to a realm where forms and ideas converge in unexpected ways. The vase serves as a reliable form that provides support to figures, flowers and subjects. At the same time, it plays with the canvas’ inherent lines, inviting our imagination to weave scenes beyond. The flowers, sometimes faintly outlined and barely perceptible, are the only elements that extend the contours of the vase. It is not always clear what surrounds the scene. Color gradients may suggest water. Similar to the photographic lens, the vase holds a delicate balance between what is seen and what remains hidden. Fragile is not the scene, but what we allow ourselves to see, for what we see can easily disappear. Within my new series of small sculptures, who are made from scribbles on paper and epoxy, based on my AI series "intuitive drawings", I asked myself, how do you emphasize the return to the naturalness of something that, as an aesthetic form, has its origins in the artificial? By also connecting it with a part of nature. I found ivy works best for this. It embraces the seasons and is evergreen. For me, evergreen is a word with absolutely positive connotations, a kind of infinity. This time it gets combinated by a linocut print of an ivy leave. Again there`s 2 sides of a results. 2 possible variants and considerations of one thing. Like in life, where there are at least 2 ways to see, feel or evaluate things. "I am blue 2". Stöhrer’s introspective listening and flinging out of signs and ciphers, of streams of color that penetrate and overlap each other and form a shivering skin of paint, seem to be cushioned by Levinson in a subtle reflex to make the image diffuse and refracted once again by the medium. As if the Photoshop filter were tightened by a further imaginary twist, because the crystalline clarity of the photograph in the sense of truth has become questionable anyway. Stöhrer reacts with calculation to the drip-heavy flow of the wet paint, blurs and integrates it, Levinson appeals to the texture of the image carrier, just as Seurat needed the coarse surface of his paper to catch the delicate dust of his pastel chalk.
