Jenkin van Zyl’s « Palace of Wasted Footsteps » solo exhibition for Gallery Weekend Berlin, revisits the intense world-building of « Surrender, » his project that draws upon his research into 1930s American dance marathons and the ephemeral world of (Japanese) love hotels, hourly hotels for rendezvous into the night. At the intersection of history and fantasy, van Zyl’s sculptures—five competing doppelgängers for intimate dance duos—explore the brutal beauty of endurance and the thin line between competition and survival. They are compelled by a mysterious energy drink, called limitless growth, pushing them ever to the brink of bodily collapse, despair and grace dialectically locked into a kind of « rat race » of self-imposed sel-obsessed success or community, endurance versus surrender, they can not go on, they must go on. Hua International is pleased to announce the opening of Jenkin van Zyl’s ( @jenkinvanzyl ) solo exhibition “Palace of Wasted Footsteps,” on Friday April 26th 6-9pm, which marks the next chapter in his world-building within the Surrender project, for the occasion of Gallery Weekend Berlin. In new installations, of hand painted resin sculptures, van Zyl continues to delve into extreme experiences and the quest for personal freedom, drawing inspiration from the public endurance spectacles of 1930s American dance marathons. The exhibition intertwines themes of productivity, escapism, and community, challenging notions of individuality and collectivity while reflecting on contemporary anxieties and desires. It’s unclear whether these doppelgängers compete out of an insatiable yearning; or from their desire for escapism, community, oblivion, or plain victory in a marathon. Disregarding these concerns, the figures are propped up by mountainous plinths of Limitless Growth; a mysterious energy drink that fuels these contestants and propels them ever-forward. In Everybody Loves a Winner (ONE-HALF-OF-GRACE), a grinning trophy teases victory from behind a locked door and a series of apartment buzzers, P.E.E.P. buzzer vi-xx, punctuate the space. Among the works are reflective sculptural works that appear to change color as you walk by them, large blocks of luminous optical glass that seem to encapsulate light in their very being, and a swing visitors can use, their warmth changing the color of its surface. A recent series employs a combination of ripped glass and a sophisticated bio-chemical nanofilm coating to create enigmatic forms and colors. The space is punctuated by a large-scale gold shimmering screen hovering in midair. The works are testament to the fleetingness of human perception. Заснований у 1919 році, IUPAC вже більше століття створює спільну мову хімії. 🔹Вже кілька років поспіль IUPAC ініціює проведення Всесвітнього жіночого сніданку (GWB – Global Women’s Breakfast). Метою серії GWB, що проводиться разом із Днем жінок і дівчат у науці ООН, є створення активної мережі людей усіх статей для подолання бар’єрів на шляху гендерної рівності в науці. За останні п’ять років було проведено понад 1500 заходів GWB у 100 країнах. Last week, I participated in the IUPAC Global Women’s Breakfast @Polimi. I was one of the researchers sharing part of my research work. 🎉 Thomas Adewumi University proudly hosted the #IUPAC Global Women's Breakfast 2024 ( #GWB2024), spotlighting "Catalyzing Diversity in Science"! 🌟 Led by our Chemical Science Department and coordinated by the Directorate of Research, Innovations, and Product Development (DRIPDEV). The event brought together female staff, students, and guests from five invited secondary schools. @kemi.dahunsi, Director of DRIPDEV, kicked off the event with a heartfelt welcome, stressing the importance of celebrating women scientists globally. She highlighted the event's mission to break down barriers in science and champion diversity within the field. Following, @la_cisca, the Vice-Chancellor, delivered a concise yet powerful address, reaffirming the University's dedication to honoring the intellectual strength, resilience, and groundbreaking achievements of women in science. Prof. Oladipo warmly welcomed Professor Oluwatoyin Odeku, a distinguished Professor, Faculty of #Pharmacy @world_of_uites, as the event's keynote speaker. Professor Odeku's presentation titled "Catalyzing Diversity in Science" delved into various aspects, including the types of diversity, its importance in science, associated benefits, challenges, and strategies to foster diversity. 🌍💡 Other Insights of the event; included empowering the Girl Child, delivered by Mrs. Oluwadamilola Ezekiel, and discussing women's roles in science @wonderagbana. 🍳 👩🔬 More than 40 @uofguelph faculty, staff and students came together Feb 27 for the Guelph @iupac.global.womens.breakfast #GWB2024. A panel discussion on being women in STEM followed in the afternoon. “We wanted to encourage discussion about what it means to be a woman in STEM, both now and in the past, and celebrate women in STEM with our friends, allies and community,” says Dr. Maryanne Stones, research associate in @uofg_chem. Stones led planning for the event along with Samantha Binkley, PhD Candidate, and Emelia Schaafsma, undergraduate student in Biological and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Hoy se llevó a cabo el Desayuno Global para Mujeres en la Ciencia, IUPAC Global Women's Breakfast #GWB2024 una actividad promovida por la Unión Internacional de Química Pura y Aplicada, que busca abrir espacios para fomentar la diversidad y la inclusión en las ciencias y las ingenierías. El evento que se llevó a cabo en el Instituto de Química fue organizado en conjunto con la Facultad de Química, por lo que contó con la presencia de los directores de ambas entidades: el Dr. Carlos Amador (FQ) y el Dr. Luis D. Miranda (IQ), así como la Secretaria Académica de Investigación de la FQ, la Dra. Itzel Guerrero, y la Dra. Aline Villareal, quien promovió la organización del evento desde la FQ. Además, la Dra. Carmina Montiel (FQ), la Dra. Patricia Cano (IQ) y la Dra. Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Women University Peshawar celebrated #GWB2024 on February 27, 2024, aligning with the U.N. Day of Women and Girls in Science. The aim of the event was to build a network to tackle gender equality barriers in science, with over 1500 events in 100 countries over the last five years. SBBWU Peshawar's participation represented Pakistan globally.
