He died tragically when he drowned in the Nile. His death caused Hadrian to grieve deeply, so he founded numerous cities in honour of Antinous, erected temples and initiated a sculpture cult around Antinous. The statues were distributed throughout the empire. The sculptures not only served to commemorate Antinous, but also to glorify his beauty. Antinous became a favourite subject for artists and sculptors of the time, who wanted to depict the youthfulness and grace of their beloved. Christian Holze’s sculpture of Antinous is a „fusion“ of two versions of Antinous: Antinous Farnese, 130-137 AD (from the collection of the Renaissance Cardinal Farnese) and Antinous Capitoline, 130-138 AD (from the Capitoline Museums in Rome). The ancient models might be perceived today as stylistically rather stiff and not very rich in detail and perhaps create distance rather than closeness. Christian Holze’s interpretation of the antique sculpture is suddenly in motion and becomes a touching and almost intimate encounter between the two versions of Anitinous. @christianholze is not THE MOST BORING ARTIST I KNOW, despite naming his current exhibition at the @reiter_galleries in Berlin as such. Holze is a storyteller and a storyblender. The exhibition at Reiter is really a resounding success - visually stunning, pleasantly surprising, with humor and style, and, above all, it brings me joy. I appreciate the way Holze transforms his works into wall installations using simple industrial exhibition rail systems. There’s always something to discover on the backside of the canvases, from another angle or in another perspective. I appreciate the bold use of colors (no fear of neon green!). Full credit to the artist - who appears to embody the roles of creator, art historian, curator, and designer simultaneously. The legend of Laocoon is reinterpreted here. The priest Laocoon was the one who tried to alarm the Trojans about the wooden horse, whereupon the goddess Athena sent two snakes to kill his two sons in order to prevent this from happening. The deceived men withdrew their supposed gift behind the city walls, and the rest is history. Thus, within the exhibition, the fragments of the Laocoon group, which in their entirety visualize the father’s grief over the death of his sons, become a symbol of the pain over the loss of the treasure through the simultaneity of the audio piece. The allegory itself is a means of concretizing, even allegorizing abstract circumstances. It is similar with the related meme, which has become an integral part of our communication: on the one hand as an element of cultural identification and demarcation on the other, it creates a sense of community and the impression of supposed superiority over the ignorant. MIXED FEELINGS I lost my gems / Manuel Sékou Christian Holze Kuratiert von Winnie Seifert 26.01.-24.02.2024 Geöffnet: Freitag 16 - 19 Uhr, Samstag 13 - 16 Uhr Und auf Anfrage In der Duoshow MIXED FEELINGS gehen Hoch- und Subkultur eine Symbiose ein – Sprachverwirrungen, Fußballkult, Lokalpatriotismus prallen auf Dresdner Barockkultur und griechische Heldensagen. Die Sage des Laokoon wird hier neu verhandelt. Der Priester Laokoon war derjenige, der die Trojaner vor dem hölzernen Pferd zu alarmieren versuchte, woraufhin die Göttin Athene zwei Schlangen schickte, seine beiden Söhne zu töten, um eben dies zu verhindern. Die Betrogenen zogen ihr vermeintliches Geschenk hinter die Stadtmauern, der Rest ist Geschichte. So werden innerhalb der Ausstellung die Fragmente der Laokoon-Gruppe, die in ihrer Gesamtheit das Leid des Vaters über den Tod seiner Söhne verbildlicht durch die Gleichzeitigkeit des Hörstückes zum Sinnbild des Schmerzes über den Verlust des Schatzes. Das Sinnbild selbst ist ein Mittel um abstrakte Umstände zu konkretisieren, ja zu allegorisieren. Ähnlich verhält es sich mit dem ihm verwandten Meme, das aus unser aller Kommunikation nicht mehr wegzudenken ist: einerseits als Element der kulturellen Identifikation und der Abgrenzung andererseits – stiftet dieses ein Gemeinschaftsgefühl und den Eindruck einer vermeintlichen Überlegenheit gegenüber den Unwissenden. Ein ambivalenter Zustand der permanenten Alarmbereitschaft manifestiert sich in Elbflorenz. Die Stimmung kippt. Die Protestkultur in Dresden entwickelt sich stetig weiter. Der Aufstand scheint ein adäquates Mittel der Einflussnahme – von der Antike bis zur Jetztzeit. Und doch ist eine weitgehend friedliche Koexistenz möglich und erstrebenswert, führt sie doch zwangsläufig zum Dialog, wie rezente Ereignisse vor malerischer Kulisse immer wieder illustrieren. That's what you read in the newspapers for months. But how does Saxon work? As soon as we enter the room, we are greeted and overwhelmed by a tapestry of sound woven from episodes of life in Dresden. The sound installation by Manuel Sékou - a child of this city and probably better known to most as I LOST MY GEMS - is a conglomeration of sound snippets with thematic references to jewel theft and to social developments and exaggerated peculiarities of the state capital, in which the projection surface of the "East" seems to symbolize itself. Between the two audio pieces as part of the exhibition, his trilogy of works also includes the book ILMG002. Not only the painful loss of a part of Augustus the Strong's art-historical legacy, but also cult-like elements find their place here and merge into a comprehensive image of the Saxon self-image. Mixed feelings - from thoughts about class structures to unease, shame and bewilderment - arise when viewing the visual collection of impressions and snapshots that he compiles on Instagram. Social studies that paint a sarcastic but honest and self-deprecating picture of our city and reveal social subtexts. November 2019 – A stab in the heart – Early Monday morning, unknown persons break into Dresden’s Grüne Gewölbe and steal a piece of our Saxon identity along with the jewels worth tens of thousands of euros. That’s what you read in the newspapers for months on end. Mixed feelings make their way from the depths of your body to the inside of your skin and slowly creep through your pores. You open your eyes and embrace the hitherto intangible object with your whole being and lose yourself in it. It is all about this: surrendering to the idol, about the immersion of the „I“ in the work – right up to its own dissolution. To find and locate yourself somewhere. The exhibition MIXED FEELINGS unites the positions of the sculptor Christian Holze and the artist Manuel Sékou and creates a space for the sublimity of art.
