We are thrilled to announce representation of New York-based artist Oren Pinhassi, who creates sensuous sculptures and large-scale installations that explore the politics of architectural spaces as they relate to the human body. His anthropomorphic sculptures, often standing up to eight feet in height, examine individual vulnerability and fluidity within the built environment, probing new possibilities for coexistence. In September 2024, we will open an In Focus presentation of @Oren_Pinhassi’s work at our New York gallery. “The sand-encrusted totems of Oren Pinhassi greet us like Brancusi’s that have just been on a long journey through the desert.” Brian P. Kelly, The Wall Street Journal Born in Tel Aviv in 1985, Oren Pinhassi earned his MFA from Yale University and currently lives and works in New York City. I first came across the artist’s work during his solo booth with Edel Assanti at Art Basel Miami 2022, immediately falling in love both with the kind heart of the artist, and his sensitive body of work. I am honored to have placed one from that showing in a client collection. Pinhassi’s first UK institutional exhibition titled "False Alarm" (2023) at Mostyn, Wales, showcases the artist’s -enigmatic vertical forms composed of multiple layers of sand over welded steel skeletons. The fragility of the material–gives a sense of impermanence to the sculptures and reflects the fragility of humanity. Pinhassi reasons that “sand or dirt, reminds us of our fragility and temporality of our bodies. As it is the dirt we will return to, at the same time, it is the mythic material from which we are told to be created…It is a material holding together beautifully so many of our stories of life and death that we often experience…” Including works from the Mostyn exhibition, Pinhassi’s newest exhibition at Edel Assanti, titled "False Alarm," continues on the themes of life, death, desire, and gratification. Oren Pinhassi's new sculptural work 'I Do Not Fear Time (Guardian)', 2023, is on view at our Frieze London booth (G10). Made from sand layered by hand over a welded steel skeleton, Pinhassi's totemic sculpture explores the logic of mourning as a site of metamorphosis. In 'I Do Not Fear Time (Guardian)', the figure is upstanding, yet the stance of its feet, curled over the edges of unwieldy rock bases, signals a progression towards horizontality, as if caught in the in-between state. "Moveables" at @ICAPhiladelphia brings together the work of five artists—@Jes.J.Fan, @NikitaGale, @HannahSLevy, @Ken__Lum, and @Oren_Pinhassi—who are rethinking functional design and its intimate relationship to the human body. Whether reminiscent of a living room, lighting rig, toothbrush holder, or chandelier, their works invite us to imagine new possibilities for the objects that shape our daily lives, including who they are made for and how they might be used. Each ensemble invites us to reconsider the constructed world around us, suggesting that design is not only a reflection of who we are and how we are conditioned, but also a proposal for other ways of being. Jes Fan's works, such as his video "Xenphoria" (2018-2020) and sculptures partially created from casts of his own body, question typical notions around race, gender, and what constitutes being human. 1 month left to see False Alarm by Oren Pinhassi Oren Pinhassi's work includes a number of historical references, ranging from the idea of totemic figures in ancient civilisations to the Art Brut genre. This has earned his work admirers across different generations of artists. Ambiguity about art objects is key to the artist's practice. The title of the exhibition is itself an ambiguous combination of words: has the cause of alarm passed, or is it still present? The phrase signals Pinhassi’s desire to explore a moment of collective struggle to reimagine our future narrative.
