My abstract was accepted!! (Photo is Gigi at an #SCA event wearing Egyptian Roman #historybounding mashup). She will be presenting at De Montfort University in Leicester, UK later this year. The title of her presentation is — “Power in the Margin: People of color in dress history & costuming” ABSTRACT This presentation will cover dress history as the first step on her path from sociologist to independent researcher, reenactor, public historian, and CEO of a nonprofit founded to address exclusion and inequity in historical costuming. We will explore the intersection of modern people of color, historical marginalized people, and dress history. We will touch on the importance of community, because as bell hooks stated, “Rarely… are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion.” This lecture is designed to be part of a larger conversation that challenges perceptions of marginalized historical makers, modern underrepresented (re)makers, and to promote the inclusion of independent historical costume researchers in order to increase the richesses of the discipline by increasing diversity of thought, experience, and expertise. #costumersofcolor #inclusivecostuming #inclusivecosplay

This Memorial Day, the OHRE recognizes the sacrifice of the over 1 million US servicemembers who have given their lives for their country. We also wish to highlight those who served the United States despite experiences of racism, discrimination, and social ostracism, and whose legacies and accomplishments often remain hidden from history. Though this is not an exhaustive list of individuals and groups whose military service has been erased or hidden from history, we hope you view this list as a starting point for continued learning, dialogue, and exploration. However you plan to mark your Memorial Day, we hope it is meaningful for you. #memorialday #hiddenhistory #inclusivehistory #service [Description: a carousel of ten slides on a light blue and dark blue background. Today, on Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our country. We pay special tribute to the significant contributions of African American soldiers whose courage and dedication have often gone unrecognized in our history. We honor the sacrifices of the courageous African American soldiers who played a pivotal role in the history of this day. In 1865, freed African Americans in Charleston, SC, organized one of the earliest Memorial Day commemorations, a powerful act of remembrance and respect. Today, we celebrate and remember all heroes who have fought for our freedom and their families for their unwavering commitment and sacrifice. Let us come together to celebrate and honor every hero who has fought for our freedom. We remember. We honor. We are grateful. 🇺🇸 #MemorialDay #HonorAndRemember #JackAndJillOfAmerica #HonoringHeroes #InclusiveHistory

The History Lessons by Shalina Patel ( @thehistorycorridor ) is a whistlestop tour of history in bite-size chunks, but with an overarching theme of reclaiming untold stories and voices beyond the usual narratives. Patel whisks us through ancient to modern British history, adding extra context exploring the rest of the world, and with a specific emphasis on shining a light on the lives and contributions of diverse people throughout time. We learn about real people like Licoricia of Winchester, an anglo-Jewish, highly educated woman in medieval England who was imprisoned in the tower of London, or Sophia Dulip Singh, Indian princess and goddaughter to Queen Victoria, who also happened to be a prominent suffragette who put herself in harm’s way to protect other women. No history book can be all encompassing, and I enjoyed the premise of learning more about those topics that would have been touched on in school, and those that weren’t but should have been, like the impact of empire, the forgotten allies of WWI and WWII and the British civil rights movement. The ability to revisit something we know a little about, and have our understanding broadened to include those who are often written out of history was really appealing to me. I think one of the best things about this book is the storytelling. Overviews of vast swathes of history tend to focus on dry headline facts, but Patel weaves the personal into every topic – focusing on small details as well as large events, understanding that so many different people’s contributions helped shape the world we live in today. What stayed with me was how cavalier leaders of Britain have often been with the lives of others – structural racism on the grandest scale – and how brave and tireless and pivotal so many people have been in the face of that oppression to make change for the better. The History Lessons is out now – thank you so much to @iconbooks for gifting me a copy in return for an honest review. 5/5!

Reposted • @tompkinshistory One of the innovations our recent funding has made possible on the HistoryForge platform, is the ability to search “People” records for all the census tracts digitized, and not just in a specific decade (This search option is under the “Data” drop down menu). We searched “Place of Birth-Japan” and found only 16 residents of Tompkins County (out of the records digitized so far) who had been born in Japan and living in the City of Ithaca across 70+ years (1880-1950) of digitized census tracts. Interestingly five of these individuals had a secondary notation to their place of birth, noting that they were “American Citizens” who had been born in Japan. Since 1890, individuals who were born in a foreign country, but who had at least one parent who was an American citizen, have been defined as native rather than as foreign born. Explore these records at tompkins.historyforge.net/people Our thanks to the National Endowment for the Humanities for their grant funding that has made the expansion of the Tompkins HistoryForge project possible since 2022. BLACK OXFORD UNTOLD STORIES LAUNCHES NEW GUIDED BUS TOUR Black Oxford Untold Stories in partnership with Oxford Bus Company (City Sightseeing Oxford) launches a guided bus tour - a unique journey back in time, unlocking the secret histories of Oxford’s Black scholars. Passengers will be treated to previously untold stories celebrating Oxford’s Black history at some of the city’s most iconic locations. Visitors can enjoy the experience via City Sightseeing Oxford’s hop-on hop-off bus, take in the breathtaking views of Oxford's picturesque spires from the top deck, and get up close with a walk through the city’s historic streets. Lewis, Margaret Thatcher, Harold Wilson, and Bill Clinton are familiar to many. But what about its Black scholars? Luke Marion, City Sightseeing Oxford Managing Director, said: “We’re proud to have formed such an innovative partnership that enables us to offer our customers a unique insight into Oxford’s history. Tickets for the tour cost £20 for adults and £11 for children, with student and senior tickets priced at £15. The 90-minute tour will occur on July 27th, August 10th, September 14th, and October 5th, 6th, 12th, and 13th. Premier Legault's comments suggesting Quebec's history only began with French explorers has sparked backlash, with critics demanding recognition of Indigenous Peoples and their significant contributions. Tomorrow is my very last class as a HGSE graduate student, and it feels surreal. No, this year hasn’t been perfect, but it has surrounded me with some amazing fellow educators and professors. Growing and learning as a history educator this year was paramount to me, and there are five defining principles that will continue to shape my approach to teaching history and social studies going forward: 1. I will ignite curiosity with passion, making history come alive for all. #HistoryPassion #CuriosityAwakened 2. I commit to honoring diverse voices, weaving inclusivity into every historical lesson. I will build a curriculum that reflects and challenges my students and epitomizes windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors. #InclusiveHistory #DiverseVoices 3. Through storytelling, I will breathe life into history, sharing its vibrant tales with my students. History requires narratives; it yearns to be spoken and told. #StorytellingHistory #VividNarratives 4. I will piece together the whole historical puzzle, revealing the interconnected past for understanding. #WholePictureHistory #ConnectingPast 5. I will teach history not as just lessons of the past but stories of the present and future. History is not just the past. It is the now; it requires building students who are civically aware, engaged, and informed. They must know in order to evaluate and not repeat. I am excited to take these lessons into the next chapter and continue creating historical classrooms that challenge, engage, and empower students. Thank you HGSE! 23 Days Until Graduation!

Title of the book: Muslim in the Philippines Author: Cesar Adib Majul At bottom, the Muslim resistance against Spain in the Philippines was not an isolated or insignificant phenomenon but an essential part of the general resistance of all Muslim peoples in Malaysia against Western Imperialism, Colonialism, and Christianity. In an important sense, the sultanates were articulations of a wider social entity, the Islamic society in the Malaysian world. It is within this context that the history of Moro Wars should be seen to be better understood. So, let’s take a bigger step to learn and better understand the context of the Moro Wars in the Philippines so that we can gain a deeper understanding of the root causes of the conflict and how it has shaped the Mindanao we know today. #WeAreMindanao #BooksonMindanao #MindanaoHistoriesandStudies #InclusiveHistory #history #mindanaohistoriesandstudies

🌟 Unsung Valor: Celebrating the Integral Role of Indian Soldiers in the ANZAC Gallipoli Campaign 🌟 This ANZAC Day, let’s broaden our horizon of remembrance by honoring the brave Indian soldiers who fought valiantly at Gallipoli alongside ANZAC troops. 🇮🇳🤝🇦🇺🇳🇿 About 16,000 Indian soldiers participated. Suffered approximately 1,600 casualties. Units Involved included the 14th Sikhs, 6th Jat Light Infantry, and 7th Rajputs. Their cooperation with ANZAC forces not only showcased extraordinary bravery but also helped forge lasting bonds between the nations, influencing our diplomatic and cultural relationships to this day. While the ANZACs are rightly celebrated, the stories of these Indian soldiers remind us of the diverse and inclusive nature of our shared history. Efforts are increasing to educate and commemorate these heroes, ensuring their sacrifices are recognized and never forgotten. Let’s keep their memory alive by sharing their stories of courage and unity. 💪📚 #ANZACDay #LestWeForget #MilitaryHistory #InclusiveHistory #sharedsacrifices I proudly wore the poppy my wife has knitted. @indiainnewzealand @indiannewsnz @theindianweekender @waitakereindian @sanjaythatshawarma @christopherluxon @chris_penk_nz @markmitchellmp @melissaleemp @simoncourtact @lauratrask @karenchhour @dbseymour @nzdefenceforce @newzealandpolice @communitypatrolsnz @judithcollinsmp

A resource for #BIPOC when facing microaggresions in general and specifically in costuming spaces. Here are suggestions from a licensed, clinical psychologist (@raquelmartinphd) who specializes in studying/addressing racism-related trauma and dealing with racism-related stress. What should you do when faced with a race-related insult (aka microaggression)? . First, validate your feelings. It is ok to be upset. Remind yourself cognitively about race vs racism. Racism is the issue, there is nothing wrong with your race and your amazing melanated skin. Then, empower yourself to voice and document the incident because you have a right to a safe and respectful experience at costuming events. . For the short-term, ask the staff to outline their immediate strategies to address racism, including details on how they and their organization intend to support you, the impacted participant as well as educate their other participants on prejudice/stereotypes and inappropriate behavior. . For the long term, inquire about their strategies to prevent racism and foster a respectful environment to rebuild trust and provide a safe space for all. . Comment below with a microaggression you've faced in costuming. I'll go first. For tips that organizations can use to respond to racism-related microaggresions, follow these accounts and take their trainings. @racialequityinsights @raquelmartinphd #costumersofcolor #inclusivecostuming #historicalcostuming #inclusivehistory #nonprofit #inclusionandbelonging #historicalreenactment #publichistory #historicalinterpretation #historicalfashion #historicaldress #livinghistory #inclusivehistory

🌍 Diving into history isn’t just about exploring the past; it’s about understanding the myriad perspectives that have shaped our world. #DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) plays a crucial role in this exploration, challenging historians to recognize and embrace the full spectrum of human experience. 📚 By prioritizing diverse voices, we ensure that history reflects all of us, not just a select few. This commitment to inclusivity enriches our understanding, fosters empathy, and bridges divides. Let’s continue to support and amplify historians who are making strides in DEI, for a more equitable and comprehensive view of our past. #HistoryMatters #InclusiveHistory

On Thursday, April 18th, the Greenwood Cultural Center (GCC) will host its annual Greenwood Cultural Center Legacy Award Dinner: a celebration of history, culture, and community. The event will also commence with a reception at 6:30 PM, with dinner served promptly at 7 PM. This year’s Legacy Award will pay tribute to the Osage Nation and recognize their significant contributions to the region’s cultural tapestry. One of the evening’s highlights will include a captivating performance by the Osei Singers of the Oscar-nominated song “Wahzhazhe,” translating to “A Song for My People,” as prominently featured in the acclaimed film “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The Greenwood Cultural Center Legacy Award Dinner will celebrate the rich heritage of the Osage Nation and delve into the historical significance of the award-winning film “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Emphasizing the importance of crafting and sharing an inclusive history, the event will underscore the theme of “A People’s History — of the United States.” The Greenwood Cultural Center Legacy Award Dinner serves as the GCC’s primary fundraising event. It plays a pivotal role in supporting the center’s vital work in the Tulsa community. Hence, the financial contributions garnered from the dinner are essential for sustaining the GCC’s historical, cultural, and educational initiatives. Emmy Award-winning actress Alfre Woodard will serve as the Honorary Chair for this year’s event. Additionally, Ms. Woodard will have the honor of presenting the Legacy Award to the Osage Nation. Geoffrey Standing Bear, the Principal Chief of the Osage Nation, will accept the award. #TulsaHistory #InclusiveHistory

Exploring the Hidden Threads of the American Cowboy: A Journey Beyond the Myth 🌄🐎 The iconic image of the cowboy, often romanticized as the solitary hero of the American West, carries a story much richer and more diverse than the prevailing narrative suggests. While mainstream depictions might lead us to believe that the cowboy culture is an exclusive domain, the reality is a vibrant tapestry interwoven with the skills, traditions, and contributions of Native Americans, African Americans, and Spanish vaqueros. This shared heritage challenges the narrow perceptions and celebrates the diverse origins of cowboy culture, revealing a history marked by collaboration, resilience, and a deep connection to the land. As we peel back the layers of myth, we uncover a story of unsung heroes whose influence extends far beyond the cattle trails and rodeos, offering a more inclusive and authentic portrait of the American West. Let’s honor the true legacy of the cowboy, enriched by diverse cultures and bound by the spirit of adventure. #TrueCowboyLegacy #CulturalHeritage #AmericanWestRevealed #InclusiveHistory #CowboyKalen #CowboyCarter

March 18 is also commemorated as the Bangsamoro Freedom Day in honor of the Bangsamoro people who were inspired to pursue their right to self-determination after what happened during the Jabidah massacre. This resulted in the creation of a secessionist freedom movement. #InclusiveHistory #BangsamoroHistoryMonth #wearemindanao #mindanaohistoriesandstudies

Another significant event that occurred on March 18, 1968 is the Jabidah massacre. This terrible event happened 56 years ago and involved the death of many young Moro people who had been recruited for Operation Merdeka, a clandestine military operation intended to take over the island of Sabah in Malaysia. This is a key moment in Bangsamoro history as it sparked calls for justice and Moro independence. March 18 is an important date for the Bangsamoro people. On this date in 1935, Hadji Abdulhamid Bongabong, the chief religious leader of Unayan, along with 189 Meranaos, sent a letter of appeal to the United States through the Governor General. This letter, known as the Dansalan Declaration, expresses the enduring sentiments and aspirations of the Moros for a separate homeland. #Dansalandeclaration #InclusiveHistory #BangsamoroHistoryMonth #wearemindanao #MindanaoHistoriesandStudies Photo: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/Hshf5wN5YqZGVpdJ/?

Women’s History Month – Ancient Women THIS MONTH IS WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH. EACH WEEK OF THIS MONTH, WE WILL INTRODUCE YOU TO THE CENTER’S WORK BY FOCUSING ON A PARTICULAR HISTORICAL PERIOD IN PHILOSOPHY AND SCIENCE. Female philosophers have been active from antiquity on and were present as philosophers throughout the centuries. They acted, responded, criticized, and improved the course of philosophy. They were neither unique nor isolated cases, their philosophical work withstood their oppression, and their influence has been greater than hitherto assumed and admitted. Female philosophers were inventors and developers of ideas, and they initiated lines of argument, of questioning, and of approach. – Hagengruber, Ruth 2015. „Cutting through the Veil of Ignorance. Rewriting the History of Philosophy”. In: Hagengruber, Ruth / Green, Karen. 2015: The History of Women’s Ideas. The Monist 98. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 34-42. Miss you, @reynerrubylynn. RIP Forever Queen! Ruby was a seasoned performer with a longstanding career, notably as the leading actress in The Play-House of the Ridiculous (1969-1988) theater troupe. In addition to her theatrical pursuits, she was also the frontwoman of the band Ruby and The Rednecks.
The Play-House of the Ridiculous dismantled previously venerated foundations of the art form, rendering naturalistic acting and classical narrative structures no longer indispensable requisites for a work of merit. Extravagant performances, surreal narrative arcs, and ostentatious stagecraft and attire came to characterize this theatrical progeny, which sought to jolt, disconcert, and challenge the sensibilities of unsuspecting audiences. #theateroftheridculous#WarholSuperstar#LGBTHistoryMonth#QueerHistory#LGBTActivists#GayRevolutionaries#StonewallRiots#WarholSuperstars#Transrights#RainbowRevolution#LGBTQHeroes#EqualityWarriors#QueerLeaders#PrideHistory#LGBTQIcons#QueerResistance#transformers#TrailblazingQueers#LGBTQEmpowerment#GayRightsMovement#InclusiveHistory#RadicalQueers#LGBTQPioneers#QueerTrailblazers#DiversityandInclusion#peterhujar #QueerTheater #jackiecurtis #offbroadway #andywarhol

The term “Bangsamoro” is derived from the Malay word “bangsa”, which originally means “nation” and “Moro” which is a collective term used to describe both the Muslim-majority ethnolinguistic groups and their homeland. The month of March serves as a reminder of the collective journey and ongoing quest for self-determination of the Bangsamoro people while paying tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives, committed themselves to contributing to the peace process, and helped in the realization of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Declared in 2021 by the Chief Minister of the BARMM, the commemoration of the Bangsamoro History Month inspires people to stand up for their rights, be resilient in the face of adversity, and be proud of their cultural identity. Knowing the history of the Bangsamoro people allows us to gain a holistic understanding of Mindanao. By remembering our shared history, we are shaping our shared future. 💖 Stay tuned for more stories! 👋🏽👀📝 More on the official declaration here: https://officialgazette.bangsamoro.gov.ph/2023/01/13/memorandum-order-no-0014-s-2023/ #BangsamoroHistoryMonth #MindanaoHistoriesandStudies #WeAreMindanao #InclusiveHistory
