Trauma impacts every part of a child's life. And it follows them long after they grow up. Thankfully, decades of work as child advocates and trauma disruptors have revealed that when caregivers heal, the children in their care can heal too. That is why we continually partner with local leaders to train caregivers in trauma-informed care. So they can receive the knowledge they need to see vulnerable children in a new way and gain the practical tools that will help children heal from their past. Most recently, one of our in-country program officers, Sarah, was a guest speaker at a trauma-informed conference in the Philippines that trained more than 100 social workers, caregivers, and other childcare professionals. It is our prayer that the Holy Spirit will continue to transform the hearts and minds of caregivers as a result of the new knowledge they have. And as they heal, that they will better serve and help create a different future for the children in their care. No matter where the Lord leads us, we will continue to diligently share the life-changing work of trauma-informed care believing all of God's children deserve to experience healing today.

The voicemail was short, "Hey Steven, this is Frank. Give me a callback please". Now, before I tell you the rest of the story, the picture you see is the very first time we met Frank. It was December 15, 2015 (he had already been on the streets for over a year), and we've been enjoying our friendship with him ever since. He's never asked for much and it's rare, very rare, that he's not in a good mood. He is always respectful and full of gratitude, and he never complains. And...he loves his dogs!!! Now, back to the phone call. When I returned his call, I was hoping everything was okay because we never know when they leave a short message without any detail if it's good or bad news. I'm glad to say it wasn't bad news. Frank, after 10 years on the streets, is homeless no more! I wish you could have seen the smile on my face and the tears of joy welling up in my eyes. The first thing I asked was if he needed anything and he said, 'That's the second reason I called you. If you could find me a washer that doesn't cost too much I could really use one. The laundromat is really expensive." I then asked how he was going to dry his clothes. He responded, "I can hang them up in my bathroom." That's when I said, "Would you like to have a washer and dryer, and they wouldn't cost you a thing?" For a moment, he was speechless, and then I heard, "Are you kidding?" I replied, "No, I'm not. We have a set in our warehouse." To say he was happy would be an understatement. He was thrilled! So, we will soon be delivering them, and I can't wait to see his new home and celebrate with him; as he put it, "I'm no longer homeless!" We are so happy for and so proud of you my friend!!! Scott had moved to Gallatin for a job, and at first, everything was going well. The job was good, and the pay was even better. Then Scott started running with the wrong crowd, and it wasn't long before partying became more important than work. He lost his job, and the spiral began. That’s when he woke up one day broke, not able to find work, and being evicted from his apartment. He crashed with friends for a while, but that didn't last long & the next thing he knew, he found himself on the streets. The party was over. That’s when desperation set in, and finally, Scott knew he had to do something. Things had to change, and so did he! Someone suggested he reach out to us, and he did. After a few conversations, we decided to put him on a bus heading home and a very thankful and excited big sister was waiting for him. We don’t always get the story, but we always get blessed! I found Ernest asleep under a bridge, with a backpack for a pillow & a slab of rough concrete for a bed. As I approached & gently called out to him, he stirred, rolled over, & glanced up at me. The look of “who are you and what do you want” we so often see in so many we meet, as well as the hesitancy that accompanies it. So, I stretched out my hand, introduced myself, and after a brief moment of indecision, he extended his & said in a voice that detailed his struggles, "My name's Ernest". He told me he stayed at the mission last night to get out of the rain, but he didn’t like going there because he never felt comfortable. I asked him if he had a camp or a place to stay, & he replied he did not. After a few more minutes & a few questions, I realized today wasn't the day I was going to get to hear his story, so I changed the conversation & asked if he needed anything. Again, in that same broken voice, I heard, "A blanket would be nice." I asked if there was anything else he wanted or needed & "No, just a blanket, I could really use a blanket" was his answer. As I handed him the blanket, I could see the tears well up in his eyes, & he hung his head, seemingly ashamed of those tears. I told him it was okay, & I placed my hand on his shoulder hoping it would provide some semblance of understanding & encouragement. As hard as it was to do so, I knew that was all the headway I was going to make, so I gave him my card & an invitation to call anytime, for any reason, & as I said goodbye he gently laid back down, covered up, & whispered: "Thank you and God bless". No, thank you, Ernest. I'll see you again soon. A man who has nothing, asking for so little. Thankful for a simple blanket. One of our partners in Colombia recently initiated a collaboration with local schools to educate teachers on the principles of trauma-informed care. Many of the children in these communities have experienced abuse, homelessness, starvation, and more. And often, the child who has experienced the most pain is the same child who "acts out" and "gets in trouble." The last 30+ years of working to disrupt trauma have shown us that deep-seated trauma often presents itself through challenging behaviors. Because of this, we know that the child "causing problems" is not a "bad kid"; they're just hurting. And they need someone to meet them and care for them wherever they are right now. By equipping and strengthening teachers' ability to see the needs behind the behavior, we are praying God will work through the Holy Spirit to unlock healing from the trauma they've experienced.

Workin' It Wednesday Building Boxes...Bakery treats need bakery boxes 🎂🍰🧁🍪🍩 A bakery box is a very distinct package and a recognizable sight that tells our brains sweet things are coming 😋 At Sugar Plum Bakery Wednesdays are known as Box Day, the day when the "The Box Man" comes with our weekly delivery of fresh, new cases of flat boxes ready to be folded. We require cases and cases of boxes weekly. They arrive flat and need to be "built"...that's a BIG job every week! The Baker's Assistants always eagerly await "Box Day" and "The Box Man" 🤗 They take all the necessary steps to complete the job from accessing priority based on need, to folding, stickering, and organizing supplies. On average our staff folds approximately 4,500 boxes a month, not including holidays. Our customers are Baking A Difference and making dreams happen! HIS STORY...HIS REALITY... There are many reasons that cause someone to end up homeless. Jeff moved to the streets after no longer being able to afford his rent and pay his child support. Every day he goes to work, but after he pays his support, bus fare back and forth to work, food, his cell phone (necessary for his job), and the basic necessities he needs. Saving up for and affording a place to live is an impossibility. Sometimes, he even comes up a little short after paying what he owes, and that's when we step in. He will never go hungry, or do without hygiene or his basic needs. Unfortunately, this is an all-too-common situation, and the consequence of being an "IT" city is that each day is becoming more and more unaffordable for those living on a very thin margin. That being said Jeff is never bitter. There's no complaining, no self-pity, just a man doing what he has to do, to do the right thing! And there are more like Jeff than you think.
