70,000 CATHOLICS URGE WORLD BANK TO SUPPORT GLOBAL FOOD SYSTEM REFORM More than 70,000 Catholics hailing from across England and Wales have joined forces to send a resounding message to the World Bank, calling for a much-needed overhaul of the global food system. The heartfelt plea was officially delivered to the World Bank during their annual meetings in Marrakech, Morocco, by the Catholic aid agency CAFOD. This letter, supported by 18 Catholic bishops, articulates the urgent need for small-scale farmers to safeguard their right to use their own seeds. Salina, a dedicated farmer from Bangladesh, emerged as the voice of countless small farmers around the world. Her heartfelt letter encapsulates the essence of the movement, seeking protection for the fundamental rights of small farmers like herself to employ their own seed varieties. A right that is increasingly under threat as large seed corporations tighten their grip on the global seed market. This initiative is an integral part of CAFOD's 'Fix the Food System' campaign. It is a call to action for the public and private sectors to prioritise actions and innovations to reduce food loss and waste in the world. This is all geared towards restoring and building better and more resilient food systems. Food loss and waste undermine the sustainability of our food systems, impact food security and availability, and contribute to the increasing cost of food. In 2021, about 2.1 million (11,6%) of South African households reported experiencing hunger. South Africa faces challenges ranging from high unemployment and poverty to the ongoing energy crisis and rising costs of living. Many factors contribute to the growing global food insecurity including unstable climates and extreme weather events such as droughts and flooding and other environmental issues including land and soil degradation, water contamination and loss of biodiversity. Crop yields are reduced, the nutritional quality of crops is lower, and supply chain disruptions occur and threaten food security, resulting in a continuing urgent need to accelerate action to reduce food loss and waste, mitigate climate change and support food security and nutrition. This is Kaka, one of the fishmongers on Chapel market in Islington, he is from Tajikistan. These frozen prawns he sells are farmed in Ecuador - it actually says Galapagos on the box. The box which has Chinese script - and possibly went straight to china as a commodity frozen product from where it would have gone to Billingsgate fish market, where Kaka and his colleagues would have got it. Incidentally some of the seafood they sell is incredible in part due to a large Chinese and Korean clientele. This was the last drawing I did for the Market Faces show - and I had been drawing portraits on packaging from stalls and shops for three days by this stage and in my flow - so it was time to take a challenge. 6 Paella rice bags - he uses 12 every day! The result is wild and strong and is perhaps my favourite work of the lot. But here are some pics from last Friday's Supper Club. 🗣️ A 'meal with a moral', this evening provided an opportunity to talk about the global food system and our thought process behind choosing the ingredients used in making dinner. 🥃 It was exciting this time to team up with @thewhiskeynomads - we were really struck by how carefully considered each whiskey pairing was, they complemented every course perfectly! 🍽️ The food was, again, absolutely incredible - massive thank you to @behz_bakes for creating the entire menu! and to @cocoa.lila for being the oil that keeps everything running smoothly on the night! We had a real buzz afterwards that not even the horrific rain could dampen! U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized Moscow for withdrawing from the Black Sea Grain Initiative, emphasizing that "hunger must not be weaponized." At the U.N. Security Council meeting on Aug.3, Blinken said Russia's war against Ukraine sparked "an assault" on the global food system. "Every member of this council, every member of the United Nations, should tell Moscow: enough. Enough using the Black Sea as blackmail; enough treating the world's most vulnerable people as leverage; enough of this unjustified, unconscionable war," the U.S. official said. Blinken added that 91 U.N. member states had already signed a new joint communique "committing to end the use of famine, starvation, and food as weapons of war." On July 17, Russia withdrew from the Black Sea grain agreement, brokered by Turkey and the United Nations in July 2022, and began attacking Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea and the Danube River. The initiative allowed Ukraine to continue exporting its agricultural products during Russia's full-scale war and played a crucial role in stabilizing food prices worldwide. While the grain deal was in place, Ukraine exported around 32 million tons of food to the world, mainly developing countries. "Keep in mind, this initiative should never have been necessary in the first place. It only was necessary because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its blockade of Ukrainian ports," reads Blinken's statement. "But the initiative produced concrete, demonstrable, powerful results in making sure that these food products could continue to get to world markets, going to those who needed it." Since Russia's one-sided termination of the deal, grain prices have risen by over 8% around the world, according to Blinken. 5h
