Which is worse for the climate - a glass bottle or a plastic one? To answer this we need to think about the ‘life cycle emissions’ of each bottle[1,2]. That means looking at the emissions from each stage of the bottle's life - from material extraction and manufacturing to disposal and recycling[1,3]. Most plastics are made from fossil fuels like crude oil[4], so you may think that the answer is obvious - plastic right? Well - no. ❗A glass bottle is worse for climate change than a plastic one[1,2]!❗ Here's why: glass is made of sand, or silica, and some other ingredients (soda ash and limestone)[5]. To produce a glass bottle, all these ingredients have to be melted down to a thick liquid so that it can be moulded into the shape that we want[5]. This requires very high temperatures, around 1,500oC, and therefore LOTS of energy[2,5]. Most of this energy comes from burning fossil fuels, so releases lots of greenhouse gases [6]. What about a recycled glass bottle? Well, even though you can generally recycle glass over and over without losing quality, the materials used to make recycled glass products still need to go through the remelting process, which accounts for 75% of the energy consumed during production[1,6]. On the other hand, plastic can't be recycled endlessly, but it takes less energy to make it because it melts at a lower temperature, and it releases fewer harmful gases[1,4,7]. So, next time you treat yourself to a glass bottle of soda or juice, it's worth considering reusing the bottle before discarding it. Glass is a resilient and long-lasting material that shouldn't be treated as disposable after just one use[6]. Glass or plastic? A recent study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Food found that plastic baby bottles (polypropylene BPA free) could be releasing up to 16 million micro plastics a day into baby milk due to the heat used in sterilising, and milk preparation. This is still considered a safe level by the WHO, and it is thought most of the plastics are excreted out, so no need to panic, but if you are concerned about ingestion of micro plastics, there are alternatives out there. This post isn’t designed so you rush into the kitchen and throw out all your plastic bottles, there are ways to prevent this micro plastic leaching. For example by cold water sterilising, making milk feeds up in a sterile glass jug and then transferring to plastic bottles, and even rinsing heat sterilised bottle with cool boiled water before use. Why over time I have converted my plastic storage containers to glass: 1. Glass is safer because no yucky chemicals will contaminate your food. Glass is impermeable and non-porous. Plastic containers are made with chemicals like BPA and PVC. Plastic also degrades over time. 2. Glass is transparent and easy to see the food inside, 3. Glass is sustainable -it is incredibly durable and holds up to years of reuse. It can cost more to buy glass but it lasts longer, 4. Glass is practical since it goes from freezer to fridge I oven to table. I am so happy to have also found some silicone containers that are good for storing completely cooled food items in the refrigerator or freezer and eliminates throw away plastic! GUILT-FREE, LESS WASTE Attempting a low waste lifestyle is not easy. The consumerism-driven world around us with its myriad products is designed for highly unsustainable living practices. Amidst this reality, I know many people who beat themselves up for not achieving what they set out to. Many who lose their way on this journey. And many who are bogged down by all the 'sustainability' experts and their conflicting advice. To all of you, I say. It's ok. Breathe. Many times, you will find your favourite indulgences available in alternate packaging options. In those times, let loose. Indulge. I rarely consume a soft drink but once or twice a year I say, why not? And when I do, I make sure it isn't packaged in a PET bottle. Either aluminium can or glass bottle. Is glass a better material than plastic? Why do we even ask such questions of better, bestest, eco-friendlier, etc.? Just know that all and any consumption is unsustainable. ▪️Glass might be environmentally unsustainable to produce. ▪️Glass can be recycled. ▪️Glass is difficult to carry for a waste collector. ▪️Glass can break. ▪️Glass is reusable. A product cannot be measured against one single attribute. Especially when only one aspect of an object's lifecycle is considered. Glass vs plastic options. Love it! Breakfast at my hotel in Germany is full of glass options. No plastic yogurt containers or 1/2 & 1/2 disposables here! And the cereal, granola and muesli options are in glass containers, vs individual boxes. I’ll take a picture at our office here tomorrow too! Glass bottles get picked up in milk crates to then be recycled! According to an article by Earth.org (link in bio), “Germany has been celebrated as a world leader in recycling. Its waste management system and sorting policies have paved the way for other countries to implement greener practices when it comes to trash disposal and collection.” The article does also say that Germany is one of Europe’s biggest produces of plastics and they use waste incineration for electricity and heating. First, unfortunately, even BPA-free plastics are prone to releasing toxic chemicals if heated. This makes washing, microwaving, and heating plastic containers a threat to your health. Also, even though plastic does take less time to decompose, it leeches toxic chemicals into the environment as time passes. Eventually, those chemicals will reach your water, and you obviously don’t want that. Glass is non-toxic abs free from potentially harmful chemicals even if heated to high temperatures.
