Several Preserves In One Day, IL I am participating in the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County #44in24 challenge, meaning to visit every one of the 44 preserves this year. I had started visiting them and taking photos before they announced the use of the Goosechase app, so I need to swing back by a few to get photos of the preserve signs. I live out this way, so I was able to hit Kieselburg, Roland Olson, and Hononegah, which I had been to in 2024 already, but it was a good reason to just poke around and see what there was to see right quick. The chirpy oriole, the blooming pine, and the gorgeous creek were from each of these places, in that order. My main goal was to visit J. Norman Jensen, though, as I hadn't been since winter weather. The rest of the photos are from there. I had noticed Baltimore orioles before, but this day I learned that orchard orioles are also a thing. They seem just as peppy and nosy as Baltimores, as this one flew up to the tree I parked under and just sang its little heart out. Then I saw a yellow bird, which I learned is -also- an orchard oriole, and I just had to wonder why these birds don't get their dang acts together and start looking a little more alike so I don't walk around thinking I'd seen twice as many new species as I actually did. Periodic cicadas are starting to emerge. Get ready to be submerged pretty soon . These 17-year periodic cicadas start emerging when the soil reached 64F (17.7 Celsius). You might start seeing them in areas where the soil warms up earlier, for example near asphalt, or in areas more exposed to sunlight. This particular cicada is warming up on a blade of grass, drying its wings before flying up on a tree. . Cicadas will start "singing" 4-5 days after their emergence so for the first couple of days everything will be quiet but noise will catch up fairly soon! I will be sharing more cicada content in the coming weeks as the emergence continues

Marsh grabbing a sunset on Potash. I've actually never been up this mountain despite it having a bunch of hard (mostly) bolted rock climbing routes, because hard bolted routes just aren't my jam. I think the hiking trail is only a couple of years old even if the summit was always state land and required some bushwhacking gymnastics to approach. I was excited to check out the trail that descriptions talk about scrambling and it might be tough for dogs, and all the usual stuff to forwarn folks. Definitely looking to challenge Marshall in evolutions vs just toss him into a cauldron and hope he survives. It turned out it was the usual modern ADK switchback fest with a little smidge of steeper rock towards the summit. Since there wasn't a single spot where I needed to use my hands I wouldn't call it scrambly. The trail basically did a great job routing around all the obstacles. In fact in the old days they certainly would have tossed a ladder in there and some steeper rock scrambles. But that isn't modern trail building standards. To be honest, I miss the old straight to the top trails. I mean this was still pretty steep at 1000ft a mile but it could have done that 1000ft in 3/4mi if built by 1800s east coast standards. I definitely enjoyed a new summit hike and so did Marsh, but on a scale of 1-10 for any dog that has any hiking experience it was probably a 2-3. I cannot imagine any lightly seasoned trail dog needing assistance on a simple walk up. Theyโre heeee-reeeeee! Wednesday this week, natural resources staff witnessed hundreds of periodical cicadas at Sangamon prairie! These freshly emerged red-eyed bugs were hunkered down in the prairie foliage, waiting for the cool, dewy morning to heat up enough to start flying. While we do see annual dog-day cicadas in the preserves every summer, periodical cicadas are a tad different for a few reasons. Annuals spend up to 2 years underground, have green bodies, and are 1 to 2in long. Periodicals spend over a decade underground, have a black body and red eyes, are about 1in long, and number in the billions! Here in Illinois, we are experiencing both the emergence of the 17-year cicadas, Brood XIII consisting of Magicicada septendecim, M. cassini, and M. septendecula, and 13-year cicadas, Brood XIX consisting of Magicicada tredecim, M. neotredecim, M. tredecassini, and M. tredecula. These broods only co-emerge every 221 years! That means the last time this occurred was 1803 and wonโt happen again until 2245. We at the forest preserves ask you to cherish this historical ecological phenomenon while on the preserves these next 4 weeks. Their screams may be deafening, but this experience of a lifetime is defining!

Fantastic weather for a round of golf at Meadowlark! Managed to birdie both Par 3s that were 200+ yard holes. Thatโs pretty far and tough for a muni course. Course was in good condition otherwise, but has its share of bugs flying around because itโs a Forest Preserve course. A bit pricey for 9 but a good course to check out each year! Husk featured here holding a 16oz aluminum can on the course. Husk is great for the golf bag especially if youโre having a few cold ones on the course. Marshall's second time up Hadley (last second change of plans) and first firetower ascent. He's still not ladder trained so we skipped the cab for today since the ladder was a little narrower and the entrance a little more "technical" than I remember. But once he's ladder trained and comfortable with transfers we'll get him in the cab. Oddly, we had Seneca in a cab already (I think Bald/Round Axe) and I don't remember any antics. Colvin had been in nearly every firetower and some were more complicated than others but I don't remember really thinking too hard about it so I definitely was confused when we got to the ladder and it seemed so sketch. It's possible I just didn't want to scare Marsh and set him back before he was ready, but it really did look kinda difficult for a dog. Anyway, I let him (mostly) free choose to follow us up and he did by the time we got up two flights. But he didn't really want to without a little encouragement. He did OK going up to the top on his own and I was more concerned with him descendeding in control, so I went to the mid point of each flight and held his assist loop as he walked down. He never launched. We took a break for a bit on the summit ledges and then went up the tower a second time and he was in control and fairly calm both up and down. No safety on the descent the second time. Two Rivers Forest Preserve, Durand IL (I hope you will scroll through all 10 photos because I made myself laugh.) Okay, look. Not every preserve is huge. Some are pretty tiny, like this one. It serves a purpose other than nature preservation - it has a nice little canoe launch and shoreline fishing areas, so people can more easily enjoy some river time. (It also has an outhouse, and though I was only here briefly, it was visited twice by two separate fisher folks, so it's useful in that regard as well.) I walked around, noted a few happy little robins, a few spring flowers, a blackbird that seemed a little perturbed that there was a human aiming a camera at him, a few beautiful oaks putting out new leaves, and across the road, there was a field so chock full of dandelions that I no longer feel bad about my yard. There was also a very nice view across the Pecatonica River, and three perfect holes in the trunk of a tree, so, since I didn't come across too much wildlife in this area, I just imagined really hard about what I might see there on a different day. ๐ #forestpreserve #illinois #justdreaming
