The year was 2005, David and Kim Mitchell has lost a child halfway through their pregnancy, they were inspired to provide Christmas gifts to a child who would have been his age. Kim teamed up with her aunt Evelyn Linkous, who was a principal at a school in West Virginia, to find children to sponsor. Linkous asked how many children David and Kim could handle, and before they knew it, the Mitchells and a group of friends had provided 60 children with Christmas gifts. “It is humankind's responsibility to take care of each other,” said Kim. “My grandmother instilled in me when I was young that you are more blessed to give than receive. Christmas 2023. Or is it 2024?! This year I got covid on Christmas Eve. Which meant I spent Christmas Day alone with a fever on my sofa feeling pretty miserable. And the many days after. So my wonderful parents arranged a Christmas on 12th night with most of those who I would have spent the day with normally. We wrapped up silly presents like jam and dishwasher tablets and had a proper Christmas evening. And it was just fantastic!! And So Christmassy! The. Best. Some updated photos of 🌟 Morpheus 🌟 Yesterday we decided to take the last remaining TIMESTAMPED cat at @acctphilly 💔 He is thin, has a double ear infection and will need some major dental help. He did not receive the care he needed throughout his life so when he arrived at the shelter, they knew he would not thrive there in the shape he’s in currently. Luckily @fishtailsrescue and @fishtownanimalhospital has already committed to a plan to get him better! This guy is an absolute SWEETHEART 🧡 He is asking for pets and constantly pushing against us with sweet little head bonks 🥹 The end of the year was rough and disappointing. Kris and I both came down with Covid and gave it to my parents. We missed a lot of family time and mentally things have not been the best. The older we all get, you realize that time with the people you love is what’s most important. To miss that is hard. This week we have all slowly felt better and honestly knowing that Morpheus feels safe and loved, was the positive outcome that came from all of this. When feeling isolated and alone, to know you can still do something positive for someone else, makes all the difference. There is now another cat whose time will be up tomorrow- she’s pictured last. I urge anyone (especially if you’re suffering from the post holiday blues) to give fostering a try. Cali’s life depends on it now and we can all do a little something to make a small change in this world. Today we made it to Duke for my two-year post-transplant checkup. All scans were clear, and I received some surprising news that not only will some of my medication be decreased but that after 2024 I won’t have to come in for all these tests every six months! We cannot thank enough the staff in the Duke cancer and transplant centers for the care they’ve provided, the wisdom and grace with which they go about their work, and the encouragement and support they’ve reinforced since I received my transplant. They are amazing! Two weeks ago Kristen tested positive for COVID, which meant a second straight year of being separated and another #CovidChristmas. I somehow managed to avoid it, so when she tested negative we set out to see our families for the holiday season. That plan also didn’t go the way we expected, with members of both sides getting sick, forcing us - who had already decided to see our families individually - to keep our distance from those we loved. No matter what, we had to get to this day. I couldn’t be getting sick with my checkup impending. And, blessedly, we made it. And since we’ve made it, I can finally say out loud that which we’ve been too afraid to jinx. Beyond my checkup, we needed to avoid either of us getting sick any further because we’re FINALLY, after 3 and a half years of setbacks, taking a REAL vacation! We now head to DC to fly to Hawaii for 5 days! Sure, we might pick something up on the plane, but sick in Paradise beats sick in the winter cold! Thanks for all the prayers and support! Well, the New Year isn’t off to the best start, but I’m grateful for a warm & cozy bed, mandarin oranges & a pup to snuggle with. Greg and I had planned a fun and cozy intention setting NYE, and burning of our Yule log followed by a New Year’s Day polar dip, like last year. Covid caught up to me however, smashing those plans as well as our family trip to NB. 😩 I’m choosing to stay grateful for all that I have, and all that is ahead of me. Christmas doesn't always end up as we planned. Some times there's heartache, family division, or sickness that puts a damper on the season. For my family, Covid was a deterrent, disrupting plans twice! So instead of being cozy with the family on the couch, it was "stay in your corner!" Another weekend was restructured, so we opened presents while FaceTiming and at a meet up halfway between houses. We are all fine now, so don't fret about us. However, if after looking at everyone's pristine holidays photos you're feeling a little let down, remember we can celebrate the season of Christmas any time with those we love! Christmas of cancellations for this FatDad and family, but we managed to pivot, adapt and partially recover. Both of my parents were hit pretty hard with Covid (first time they ever had it) so our Christmas Eve feast (my favorite meal of the year) with my whole family at my parent’s house had to be cancelled. That hurts a lot. Mom and dad are still ill, but thankfully on the mend. I really missed my family more than I thought I would. Then, on Christmas Eve I caught something (that was not covid and will spare you the gory details) that completely took me out of commission for Christmas Day. We have overnight family guests and were expecting more but we decided to push it back a day and finally recovered with a very festive Boxing Day/belated Christmas. I was no where near 100%, but managed to assemble and cook that beautiful Berkshire crown roast of pork (expertly frenched by non other than @meatmaniac himself). I’m am lucky enough to have a chef/sommelier (@studiousdrinker ) brother-in-law that picked up every bit of hosting/cooking responsibilities that I fumbled due to my illness. So the pictured plate is the crown roast of pork, with sausage stuffing, mashed potatoes and sautéed Brussels sprouts with some cream. Great meal. Tremendous wines too. Just a day late with some lingering belly pains. Anyways, I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah. We are hoping to get together in the coming week or so with my side of the FatDad family once my folks are back up and at it. All plans of dieting and dryness have been pushed to February. It was a Very Covid Christmas for us. I tested positive the evening before Christmas Eve, my husband tried to isolate in his studio in the garage and then tested positive Christmas Day. We did a mashed up photo together for Christmas Eve trying to keep our selfie tradition… and then have spent lots of time together blowing noses and laying in bed. The 23/24 booster really helped me, I believe!! Mine is moving through quicker than his is. Which is definitely *not* our usual pattern!! But we are thankful for vaccines and the ability to isolate from people with food and cold meds and tissue. 🤧 We are gross, but together! We were covid-free for 3.5 years!! Working towards recovery and super thankful I had modest plans for break, since I’m doing none of them. I go back on 1/3, assuming I’m testing negative. Yay break? So Merry Merry from us to you. Crossing fingers for no long covid/permanent damage, a quality recovery, and having a few months with significantly less risk of getting it again. 2024 is a new year.
