#mentalhealthawareness In 2018 my dad was put on "in home" hospice care. The doctor at the hospital gave him 14 days to live. He did not have complications due to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, or even the stroke he had experienced earlier in the year. While in the hospital for an ulcer, he was hit with debilitating depression that caused him to refuse food and water for several days. Now, the attending doctor's horrible bed side manner aside, I remember thinking, "surely he can't die from depression! What do you mean there is nothing that can be done!" Well, let's fast forward...my dad did not die, he celebrated his 84th birthday in 2021, he has been off of hospice for over two years and he is currently being treated for depression. What we learned from that ordeal is that you have to strongly advocate for your loved ones, especially the elderly since sometimes they can be written off and quite frankly "all care is not good care." So, today, he is better indeed, but we are still working with his physician to get the right mix of depression meds, but progress has definitely been made. It is important to note that we have learned that the elderly can experience side effects from some depression meds not experienced by younger people. UTIs and Seniors. My dad has been diagnosed with several UTIs over the years. During his 1st UTI, he had severe hallucinations or confusion coupled with an extremely strong urine smell. These symptoms were not normal so we quickly took him to the emergency room. At the hospital, the ER nurse said, "let's test him for a UTI." Before she took the sample to the lab she showed us his urine sample which was extremely cloudy, which she indicated was an possible sign of a UTI. The lab tests confirmed that he had a UTI. My dad spent one night at the hospital where they pumped him full of antibiotics. The next day the hallucinations/confusion were gone and he was sent home with meds. Since then, we learned that seniors may not always exhibit the typical UTI symptoms (pain, burning during urination) but that a extremely strong urine smell coupled with unusual delirium or confusion could be possible indications of a UTI. ALWAYS CONSULT A PHYSICIAN. His Physician's Suggestions: 1. Encourage my dad to drink lots of water 2. Make sure to change depends/diapers frequently 3. For the uncircumcised, make sure to pull back the foreskin to clean completely during changes and clean up. Given his propensity for UTIs, we use AZO strips (pharmacy OTC) to check his urine periodically and especially when he exhibits the symptoms above. AZO strips have been right 99%. Use sterile sample cups (pharm, Amazon). We always follow up with a doctor visit for medical testing and treatment. ALWAYS CONSULT A PHYSICIAN since symptoms can vary from person to person and a UTI needs to be treated by a Doctor not cranberry juice. My dad calls this apparatus the "chariot." I call it critical to enabling his mobility and transport to rooms in the house. Sometimes called a "sit to stand" or Stand Assist Patient Transport Assistance unit," this is definately in the top five of my caregiver toolbox. Cool thing is Medicare does cover a portion of the cost of purchase. We received ours from a family which no longer needed theirs. Debilitating bouts with depression severely affected my dads mobility. We needed to be able to move him safely to and from the living room, and this machine fit the bill. #wednesdaywisdom Get organized! Regardless if you are a new caregiver or one that has been at it a while, organization is key to your sanity. The biggest game changer for my family was getting organized. Sometimes the thought of this is just plain overwhelming, especially if you are a sole caregiver or if you were thrown into caregiving after an unanticipated medical event or diagnosis. Dont focus on perfection, just take it one chunk at a time. Ask for help if necessary. Every family has that one person with a closet organized by the color wheel. LMBO 😊 Here are a few areas to get started on: 1. A system for medication management, to include keeping a complete medication list with dosage information 2. An emergency plan for 911 calls and emergency room situations...cuz its gonna happen. 3. 👴🏽Snack ideas for seniors. My 85 year old dad's appetite is not consistent. He is batteling depression and also challenged by dental issues. 👴🏽So we have several snacks ideas on standby when he rebuffs meals. Of course we would like him to eat the most nutritious food, but sometimes we are just focused on getting the calories in any way we can. LOL Here are some of the snacks in our toolbox that we use to titillate his tastebuds: 1. Deviled eggs - easy to chew, loaded with protein, and easy to eat without utensils. 2. Mini Grilled cheese sandwiches cut with cookie cutters. He likes to dip them in ketchup. 😊 3. Meatballs - if from scratch...great to hide veggies LOL. Frozen food section works just as well. We put them on toothpicks so he can easily pick them up without a mess. 4. Veggies Made Great Muffins (see earlier reel) 5. Biscuit pizzas. Frozen Biscuits cut in half and topped with pizza toppings 6. Fresh blueberries or grapes - small and sweet and nutrient dense 7. Sliced bananas - small and soft and nutrient dense 8. Low sugar fruit cocktail cups 9. Ensure Enlives for liquid meals options -my dad drinks two at a time (340 calories each) 10. Horizon organic lowfat milk (vanilla and chocolate) - easy for him to hold the carton with a built in straw 11. White castle slider....yes the ones in the freezer section. Go ahead and slip in some veggie fixings. 12. Quaker Instant grits made with milk instead of water for more calories. 🏘👵🏾👴🏽I have been a caregiver for my 85 year old father for the last 5 years. As he aged and experienced health setbacks we noticed a decrease in his appetite. We also noticed that many of the foods he used to love, were no longer appealing to him.
