Update 11 1:52 in the afternoon day 3 at home. We had Franny McAvoy Fox come for our first home health visit. I assisted in changing her stoma bag out for the first time. I was pretty anxious but it went smoothly. Natasha Lirette McGee drank an Ensure today that's a big deal because she needs protein to heal and her appetite isn't huge right now . She is doing awesome sleeping and her pain is manageable. We are starting to do laps around the kitchen every couple hours . My princess is putting in the work. The numbers are down again! I am scared though. 33!!!! Lightchains from 360 to 46 to 33! We’re smashing them and will probably get to 20 (remission) in no time. 6 weeks. That’s all it’s taken on this trial of #Carfilzomib #Mezigolmide #Dexamethasone trial. Here’s where the being scared comes in. Imagine the trial drugs at one end and the enemy soldiers ( #myeloma) are on the front line. Bang, bang, bang. The other side, the frontline is being destroyed. Every nasty soldier is disappearing. Disintegrated. Pow 💥 So in no time, no bad soldiers. No cancer. However, what’s in the trenches (the bone marrow)? The command centre is building more Storm Troopers. The command centre must be destroyed or recomputed to produce the original good guys. Quality cells with the white cells needed to fight infection & red blood cells to carry oxygen, and the platelets needed to stop bleeding. I need to be in this trial for at least twelve months to keep the soldiers in the trenches out, reprogramming the good stormtroopers back to how they were originally developed. With every war comes injuries. Side affects. Mental health. Headaches, Peripheral neuropathy & pain, fatigue, improvised immune system, drastic platelet drops, along with others lurking in the background including the occasional shakes, insomnia, and I don’t know what else because the reality is they come & go. It’s a beautiful life indeed. Just three weeks into the #Carfilzomib #Mezigolmide #Dexamethasone trial, and it’s already working 🙏. From #lightchains starting in the 300s at the onset of the relapse to an astonishing 43 at the end of cycle 1!!! Yes, you read that right. Processing the results was overwhelming. I didn’t know whether to cry, celebrate, stay calm, believe it, or doubt it. The mental side effects of the drugs might have played a part, but I’m here to share my story. Yes, my mental health has taken a hit (we’re working on reducing the steroids from 40mg to 20mg), but it’s short-term pain for long-term gain. I was informed this morning that weekly treatments will continue for at least 12 months, but hey, this is my life. Over the weekend, I was in good health (I’ve been much worse on other treatments) to celebrate my daughter’s 21st. It’s these life moments that make it all worthwhile. I’m not afraid of death, but I do want to cherish more moments with family, friends, and my extended community. Here’s to weekly pampering treatments with drugs, warm blankets, food, soda water, and the incredible staff at Hotel Epy’s (Oncology) Treatment Days. Thanks to my friends and family for putting up with my brain fog, stuttering, laughter, binge-watching Netflix, and my bouncing, sleep-deprived chatter!
There’s always a rationale behind every occurrence. As I waited for my daughter at the station, her text about the train breaking down left me wandering what I should do. Across the road, a new store adorned with vibrant rainbow colors caught my eye. Intrigued, I walked in and was overwhelmed by an incredible aura. It was overwhelming with goosebumps on my arms. I felt an inexplicable connection to the place. Greeted warmly by the beautiful Sue, I in turn also welcomed her to the community. No sales pressure, just smiles and small talk. I picked up a stone and breathed it in. It was the one. I picked up another, I shuddered as it too spoke to me. No others called me. I mentioned how I felt and Sue said that it happens in her store. What I didn’t expect was that I started to well up with tears. Sue explained those emotions were not unusual as some people even burst into tears. I haven’t cried since finding out about the relapse a few weeks ago. Maybe today was the day. Sue’s comforting embrace and reassurance filled me with a mix of emotions—fear, hope, and excitement. Opening up about my situation, Sue’s words of encouragement instilled a sense of belief in me. Reflecting on the experience, I realised that this encounter was more than chance—it was a lifeline, a beacon of hope to dispel the darkness that had engulfed me all week.
