Former #NotreDame great Raghib “Rocket” Ismail #signed his 1991 #ProSet rookie card for me #TTM. 🚀 As a lifelong USC football fan, there were a handful of opposing players that terrorized me. At the top of this list was #RocketIsmail, considered one of the greatest college football players of all time. #Ismail was a wide receiver and kick returner for the #FightingIrish, where he was an All-American, a National Champion in 1988 and runner up for the Heisman Trophy in 1990 (won by BYU’s Ty Detmer). Although expected to be drafted first overall in the 1991 #NFL Draft, Ismail chose instead to sign with the Canadian Football League’s #TorontoArgonauts after an unprecedented contract offer of over $18 million over 4 seasons. Ismail made an instant impact with the #Argonauts, making the All-Star team and helping #Toronto win the 79th Grey Cup, winning the #GreyCup MVP in the process. The CFL has suspended Toronto Argonauts' quarterback Chad Kelly for a minimum of nine regular season games for violating the league's gender-based violence policy. He is also ineligible to compete in the team's two preseason games. Oh, this book was incredible!!!😱❤️🔥 🏺When I read the story about Argonauts first time many years ago, I was so disappointed that Jason and Medea’s romance had ended so tragically. I read classic mythology, where the storyline didn’t go too deep into the characters as it was the more adventurous type of tale. 🏺This book gives a chance to see Medea not as a dark heroine who was despised at the end but as an extraordinary girl who, unfortunately, was born into a hostile family. Medea was a remarkable creature gifted with powers beyond understanding by ordinary humans. Yet, with all her gifts, she was just a human, mistreated by her father and brother and feared by their servants. Medea was never loved and understood, so when Jason appeared with all his magnetism and charm for a lonely girl, she fell for him. However, after reading this story, I think she falls for the idea of being praised, cherished and loved. Unfortunately, their relationship with Jason is built on lies upon lies, and Medea sees his true colours too late. I wonder what her fate would be if she remained by her aunt Circe’s side, the only person who saw Medea for who she was. ❤️Pros: The author understood Medea so well! 💔Cons: none 💁🏻♀️Verdict: This book made me hate Jason fiercely.🔥What a story! A gripping tale about a complex, iconic heroine, a woman, a victim, a lover, a witch, and a revenger. "Atalanta and the Argonauts" ( #5) When the call went out to Greece’s greatest heroes, for fame and glory, to join Jason and his quest for the Golden fleece, only the bravest answered the call. Heroes like Hercules, Orpheus, Telamon, Peleus, and yes, Atalanta mustered her courage and journeyed to join them. Appollonius of Rhodes wrote the epic poem “Argonautica” about Jason’s quest for the golden fleece around the 3rd century B.C. based on a much older tale, (referenced in Homer and Pindar). Apparently Appollonius elevated the romantic relationship between Jason and Medea, which in turn inspired latin poetry and Virgil’s Aeneid. In Appollonius tale, Atalanta shows up to join the Argonauts, but Jason turns her away, fearing having such a beautiful woman on board would cause conflict between his men. However, In Appollodorus “Library” (1-2nd century A.D.) he lists Atalanta as being one of the heroes who accompany Jason for the Golden fleece. Unfortunately, there are no surviving versions where we see the entirety of the journey with Atalanta involved, which begs the question; what would the adventure be like if Atalanta joined? On the topic of sea quests, lets take a quick look at ancient Greek seafaring. The Argo ship is portrayed as a sort of Trireme (ancient warship with three rows of oars and curved prow). Developments in astronomy helped ancient sea sailors navigate through constellations like Ursa Minor (little dipper) , as well as moon cycles and eclipses. They also used “sounding weights” to measure sea depths, which helped to inform distances to land. There is evidence from around 100 B.C. of an ancient “Orrery” (solar model) tool for celestial navigation called the Antikythera Mechanism. This ingenious, hand-powered device contained gears and could predict and track astronomical positions and eclipses. Like this art? Toronto Argonauts’ defensive back Qwan’tez Stiggers has been selected by the New York Jets with the 176th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The 22-year-old is the first player drafted directly from the CFL since Argos defensive tackle Jermaine Haley, who was taken in the seventh round of the 1999 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. He is just the fourth player in the common era to be drafted into the NFL with no collegiate experience. Stiggers did not attend college due to the sudden death of his father and began his career in the Fan Controlled Football League, before making his way to the CFL last season. He was first able to declare for the NFL Draft in 2024 by virtue of being three years removed from high school. The Georgia native earned a starting role at boundary cornerback for the Argonauts in 2023 and played 15 games, recording 53 defensive tackles, three special teams tackles, and five interceptions. As one of the heroes of the Argonautica, he later becomes a king of Phthia (in Thessaly) and is most famous for his marriage to the sea nymph Thetis. Zeus learned the prophecy that through his coupling with Thetis, her offspring would overthrow the Olympians, so he gave Thetis to a mortal; King Peleus. Chiron the centaur gave King Peleus the tip that he should ambush and hold tight to Thetis, as she transformed between forms. After succeeding to capture her, she agrees to marry, and the gods attend the wedding ceremony. This is the banquet where Eris, goddess of discord, sneaks in the golden apple inscribed with “for the farest,” setting off an argument between Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite. This story is told from a first-person POV and showcases all of the different roles that Medea took on in her life: daughter, mother, wife, and powerful sorceress. Quin takes a very positive outlook on her story and spins Medea into a misunderstood villain that you can't help but feel some sympathy for. She uses necromancy to almost excuse Medea's crimes, which I have never seen done with this FMC. Instead of diving into the dark side of magic, we see Medea as a woman who was taken advantage of and manipulated. 🖤𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝐛𝐲 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭 This book is being published under a different title in the US in September, but I did manage to grab the UK version, which is stunning. Hewlett goes in the exact opposite direction from Quin in that Medea completely embraces dark magic, and there is no redeeming quality present. Similar to Quin, though, Jason is a gigantic factor in Medea's character development. His deception always makes me angry, so I understand Medea's rage, though her solution to his actions is always a bit problematic, to say the least. One of the things I absolutely loved about the Hewlett version is her inclusion of Atalanta as a major influence on Medea. Atalanta is one of my all-time favorite Greek myth characters, and it was amazing to see the connections Hewlett made between these two strong females. 🖤𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝? Both of these books are extremely well-written. If you want a completely unique take on Medea, read Quinn's version. If you want a darker, more sinister tale with an incredible female side character, read Hewlett's. Either way, you can't go wrong! “Heroes” by Stephen Fry I’ve always loved Greek myths, it’s only logical that I ended up falling in love with and settling in Cyprus, home to Aphrodite. The first book in my life that I read on my own was the second one in the carousel. It’s called “Heroes of Ellada” and was a gift from my grandma. It was a book with stories about Heracles and Argonauts and I found it absolutely fascinating. Thirty something years later, I got a hold of Stephen Fry’s “Heroes” and realized that a) I still love Greek mythology b) what we learned about Greek mythology as kids was very censored (rightly so 😅) It’s amazing how much in literature is based on the mythology, there are so many parallels that I could draw to the characters, objects and plots of the contemporary books that I love. 🇮🇹 Chi nasce in questo periodo è del segno dell'ariete, uno dei più antichi dello zodiaco. ♈ Lo troviamo già sulle tavolette astronomiche sumere, dove viene inizialmente chiamato Mul.Lu.Hun.Ga, Colui che lavora la terra, ma in seguito divenne un ariete, e più precisamente il più importante tra i capi di bestiame di Dumuzi, il re pastore, dio molto importante nella tradizione sumera perché portatore della primavera. ♈ In Egitto, l'ariete era l'animale sacro di Amon-Ra, raffigurato infatti con testa di ariete, dalle importanti connotazioni solari e legate alla fertilità. ♈ Nella tradizione greca invece l'ariete rappresenta Crisomallo, l'animale dal pelame dorato che salvò i piccoli Frisso ed Elle dalle crudeli macchinazioni della matrigna, che voleva ucciderli. ♈ L'ariete alato comparve poco prima del sacrificio, invitando i bambini a montargli in groppa e a tenersi ben stretti. I due obbedirono ma la piccola Elle, meravigliata dal paesaggio che vedeva sotto di sé durante quel sorprendente volo, lasciò la presa e cadde, finendo in quel tratto che da allora viene chiamato Ellesponto. ♈ Frisso invece venne portato in salvo nella Colchide, dove l'ariete gli consegnò il suo pelame d'oro, prima di essere posto tra le stelle, come ringraziamento per i suoi servigi. ♈ Il manto dell'ariete venne quindi custodito in un bosco sacro al dio Ares, protetto da un velenoso serpente. Si tratta del leggendario Vello d'Oro, meta del viaggio di Giasone e dei suoi Argonauti.
