Eta Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is proud to publicly announce our 2024 Scholarship Recipients! This year, we are awarding three scholarships from our local serving communities. Our first scholarship recipient, Miss Camaree Griffin is a 2024 Lee Senior High School Senior Graduate. She is a proud inductee of the National Society of High School Scholars along with many more educational achievements. Miss Griffin will be continuing her post-secondary education with the aspirations to become a civil engineer. Our second scholarship recipient, Miss Nia Williams is a 2024 Forrest City High School Senior Graduate. While being a well rounded student-athlete, Nia has actively participated in extracurricular activities and community service. She is one of three Co-Valedictorian for the FCHS Class of 2024. Miss Williams is the recipient of our HBCU scholarship and she aspires to fulfill her academic study in nursing. Our third scholarship recipient, Mr. Kagan Word is a 2024 Forrest City High School Senior Graduate. Kagan is a member of the National Honors Society along with many more extracurricular clubs and community organizations. Kagan is honored to lead as Salutatorian for the FCHS Class of 2024, in addition to serving as the FCHS 2024 Class President. Suicide rates among Black youth in the United States are growing at an alarming rate. From 2018 to 2021, the racial group that saw the largest increase among people 10-24 years old was Black individuals, with an increase of 37%. [Source: CDC] From 2000 to 2020, Black youth ages 10-19 also experienced the largest increase in suicide rates, a shocking 78%.
