Have you noticed yet if your baby has high sleep needs or low sleep needs? Some babies are happily getting through their day with the bare minimum of hours normal for their age range while others are outraged if they don't get their long afternoon nap and more. I know which camp I'm in! 😴 Every baby is so different that the information out there for sleep needs is really just a very loose guide to follow. Sleep really does encourage more sleep however so I would always be offering up plenty of opportunities for your little one to rest and restore after a busy play session. If your child is regularly cat napping it will be totally normal for there to be more naps needed in the day and similarly if your little sleepy sloth likes a long afternoon nap then there will be less. As a sleep consultant the first thing I will look at is how much sleep your little one is getting on average across a 24hr period and across a few days. Daytime sleep needs don't suddenly end at 36 months either. My daughter is well beyond this at 4 years old and yet after a busy week of nursery and activities I schedule in some down time at the weekend for quiet time, or 'cinema time' (a good film on the sofa after lunch so it wont effect bedtime). She regularly still has a weekend nap and early bedtime. 9 months old marks a big transition in your child's development! Most little ones are on the move and are starting to expend more energy in their rapidly growing bodies! 👶 9 months also marks the stage where we know that a healthy baby biologically no longer requires overnight feeds to sustain their growth. And while comfort feeds are totally fine if you want to continue them, others may be starting to look to night wean 🤱 A gentle way to ditch those feeds is to slowly drop the volume by 30ml on a bottle, and for breastfeeding, wind back the time you are feeding by around 2 minutes every 3-4 days.
