🇫🇷 𝕓𝕠𝕠𝕜 𝕣𝕖𝕧𝕚𝕖𝕨 🇫🇷 This book was chosen for my book club this month, and while it’s not one that I would normally have picked up (isn’t that the beauty of a book club??), I enjoyed it! If you liked Eat, Pray, Love, you would like this one as well. I really loved how excellent the descriptions were of the food - I could practically taste the brine of the oysters and the buttery flakiness of the croissants. I’ll admit that there were times during the book that I felt like the plot was a little thin, and that the protagonist’s gift was forced and unrealistic. But her growth throughout the book was inspiring, and the cast of characters were really joyful and fun. The book absolutely made me want to fly off to Paris for a few months!! 😉🍾🥐 𝕤𝕪𝕟𝕠𝕡𝕤𝕚𝕤: When Stella’s estranged mother dies, she leaves her only one thing: a note saying “go to Paris.” Not used to spontaneity or indulgence, she reluctantly acquiesces. I totally forgot about one book I DNFed from week 19. The Mystery Writer by Sulari Gentill 1⭐️ DNF because the pacing was painfully slow, the FMC was painfully naive and the portrayal of Americans was just insulting. Now on to week 20 of 2024. The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton 1⭐️ DNF. I only got 25% into it because the rampant fat-shaming was severely offensive. The characters and plot were not compelling enough to overlook my disgust. Flower Crowns and Fearsome Things by Amanda Lovelace 2.5⭐️. I’m not usually one to seek out poetry, but I have an oracle & tarot deck by this author and I wanted to see what her books were like. 𝔽𝔸𝕀ℝ𝔼 𝔽ℝ𝕆ℕ𝕋 Même le dimanche il y a lecture ! Le quarante-deuxième livre de 2024. Le sixième de mai ! Un de mes auteurs favoris : @zerocalcare. Avec Faire front, Zérocalcare aborde dans ce livre la politique de son pays (l'Italie), la politique étrangère, la santé publique et même la solidarité internationale. C'est toujours décortiqué avec précision et humour. Cela permet d'aborder le sujet de l'état des prisons plus facilement. Il aborde même le sort des Kurdes irakiens. C'est un pêle-mêle très intéressant et informatif. L'auteur aborde aussi avec beaucoup d'autodérision son souhait de réaliser une série pour Netflix. Cette partie du livre est absolument géniale. Encore une fois avec Zérocalcare on a un livre rempli de sujets qui lui tiennent à cœur. Une vraie réussite. A savoir que tout est en noir et blanc, pour ceux qui ne sont pas fans... C'est toujours aux @editions_cambourakis. Pour 22€ et pas un centime de plus. Je te le conseille vraiment. A Man called Ove :: Fredrik Backman Genre :: Fiction, Romcom Page :: 294 This book is all about an old, retired fellow, whose name is Ove, who will make you laugh, cry and emotional😌😌 The book spans in two timeframe, one is present, the Old aged Ove and another is Ove's past life, from his childhood to adulthood. The author has described Ove as grumpy, grouchy, curmudgeon attitude with the neighbors and people around him. He thinks himself surrounded by idiots, with people always disappointing him. When we peek into Ove's past life, over the years he has been conned and harrassed, mainly by bureaucrats ("the men in the white shirts"), whom he despises. He is a man who lives life fairly and squarely but finds himself beset by injustice and bad luck and led a lonely life. The heartbreaking and at the same time, romantic part of the book is about this grumpy man missing his late wife Sonja🥰. He loves & misses her so much that he tried many suicidal attempts to meet his wife🙁. My favorite line from this book❤ "People said Ove saw the world in black and white. But she was color. All the color he had." So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door to Ove and changed this cranky old man into a compassionate one. Ohh...at the end...I fell in love with the character - Ove.😍😍 Backman's writing is simple and clear, but story building is a bit slow in this book. The last chapter deliver some unexpectedly savage emotional blows😍 I must say, A man called Ove, is a tale of love and humour. Go for it🤗❤ !! “My grandpa was a werewolf.” • I recently read Stephen Graham Jones’s incredible short story collection, After The People Lights Have Gone Off, and one of those stories later became a piece — a very important piece — of my favorite SGJ novel, Mongrels. • The story in question, Doc’s Story, is about a boy listening to his Aunt and Uncle tell him a story about his Grandfather — this story ends up circling around to the boy’s mother. This story is so good and ends up being so damn sad. It definitely brought me to tears and I had already read this bit during both of my Mongrels reads… which I also cried in lol • In a way, Mongrels is a bunch of short stories too, but more like vignettes and they are all connected. La reseña de hoy está dedicada al comienzo la trilogía de Ciencia Ficción Starbound, cuyo primer título es Atados a las estrellas (These Borken Stars) Nota que le he dado: 4, 75 en StoryGrap / 5 en Goodreads Después de encadenar muchas lecturas de fantasía o romance, tenía ganas de volver a la ciencia ficción, pero no tenía claro que libro escoger. Pero según estaba recorriendo mi estantería me tope con este libro que, os lo reconozco, llevaba acumulando polvo desde hace 7 años. Este libro es el inicio de una trilogía cuyas autoras son Amie Kaufman (Aurora Rising) y Meagan Spooner (Cazados). Sin embargo, a pesar de que a los tres libros de la trilogía les une una subtrama como hilo conductor, cada uno de ellos son historias independientes. Solo os puedo decir que me arrepiento muchísimo de no haberle dado una oportunidad antes. En esta libro nos encontramos ante una historia de supervivencia y superación en un planeta inhóspito y perdido en los confines del universos, en el que sus dos protagonistas se tendrán que enfrentar a un gran misterio que entrelaza sus vidas con la existencia del misterioso planeta. La historia, me ha encantado, era justo lo que buscaba y necesitaba. También es reseñable que el libro es muy dinámico, intercalando diferentes puntos de vista de ambos protagonistas junto con pasajes en los que se nos va contando poco a poco su pasado y otros en los que se nos cuenta poco a poco su futuro 🤐 (todo cobrará sentido en el final). También me parece un punto a favor sus capítulos cortos y que siempre terminan dejándote en vilo, con ganas de seguir con el siguiente. Espero que os guste la foto!! ❓️Jak mija Ci dzień? ‼️Możliwość zapoznania się z thrillerem prawniczym za każdym razem przynosi mi sporo radości. Tym razem niesłusznie oskarżonym o zabójstwo został pewien mężczyzna. Problem polegał na tym, że był niewinny, ale cała sprawa została zaaranżowana w taki sposób, by i tak został skazany. Podoba mi się możliwość zapoznania się z ciekawą książką. Ta jest wciągająca oraz zagadkowa od początku do końca. 👉Mimo tego, że jest to kolejny tom serii, nie odczułam żadnych przeszkód związanych z tym, by można się z nim oddzielnie zapoznać. Wcześniej nie miałam sporej okazji, by zapoznać się z twórczością tego autora oprócz jednego jego wydania. Ostatnimi czasy właśnie po takie książki jak ta sięgam najczęściej więc przyjemnością było zatopienie się w świecie Chloe i Warrena. Najważniejszym co klaruje się już od samego początku tej historii to wątek trudnych relacji rodzinnych, który moim zdaniem jest do bólu życiowy i autentyczny. Młodzi dorośli biorący na swoje barki cały ciężar, znamy to prawda? To się nie dzieje tylko w książkach, ale również bardzo często w życiu realnym. Wczesna dojrzałość jaka cechuje naszych bohaterów jest doprawdy imponująca ale wywołuje również współczucie, z racji tego iż to nie powinno tak być, że młodzi ludzie noszą tak potężny bagaż życiowych doświadczeń. Mimo tego rodzinnego wątku powieść ta przepełniona jest fantastycznymi emocjami, które nie pozwoliły mi odłożyć książki choć na minutę. Miał na to wpływ przede wszystkim delikatny motyw grumpy x sunshine oraz pojawiający w pierwszej połowie książki motyw enemies to lovers. Te motywy są przeze mnie uwielbiane, tym bardziej więc lekturę „Powiedz, żebym został” zaliczam do baaardzo udanych. Fabuła książki płynie w dobrym tempie i nie jest nachalna. Autorka pisze przyjemnie i barwnie, z łatwością można wyobrazić sobie Chloe i Warrena jako współlokatorów. Dla mnie powieść ta była na jeden dzień, czego żałuję okropnie ale nie żałuję czasu spędzonego przy jej czytaniu. Koronne dzieło Tolkiena i chyba najlepsza powieść fantasy, jaka kiedykolwiek powstała. Myślę, że gdyby nie Śródziemie, to wiele powieści w tym gatunku by nigdy nie powstało. Bez wątpienia to właśnie Tolkien wyznaczył pewne trendy i wyobrażenia. Jeżeli ktoś czytał „Hobbita”, to wie, jak to się wszystko zaczyna. Niepozorny Hobbit Bilbo w trakcie swojej wielkiej przygody znajduje równie niepozorny pierścień, który jest poszukiwany przez wielu, bowiem to właśnie tego pierścienia pożąda Pan Ciemności. Spadkobierca Bilba, Frodo dostaje ten pierścień w spadku, a wraz z nim wielkie brzemię, bowiem trzeba go ukryć i zniszczyć. Tak oto mały Hobbit wyrusza w niezwykle trudną i pełną niebezpieczeństw drogę przez Śródziemie. Brzmi niepozornie, co nie? Tymczasem jest to jednak z najbardziej epickich powieści z nurtu fantasy. Wspaniałe opisy, niespotykane rasy i niezwykle spójny świat. Do tego w tę fantastyczną prozę jest wpleciona poezja, a pieśni stanowią ważny element tego świata. Śródziemie jest chyba najbardziej spójnym uniwersum, wspaniale rozwiniętym przez autora. Czytając o nim dostajemy nie tylko pełną topografię, ale też języki (tak! Autor je stworzył), a także bogatą historię, pieśni czy legendy. Pierwszy tom jest typową powieścią drogi, gdzie nasi bohaterowie przemierzają świat, mają niezwykłe przygody i mimo wszystko jest utrzymany w dość pozytywnym tonie. Chociaż groźba mroku gdzieś tam się czai. Myślę, że stylistyką jest mu całkiem blisko do „Hobbita”, chociaż na pewno jest bardziej poważny. Catching up on reviews — have you ever read Christopher Buehlman’s Those Across The River? • I discovered this one while searching for Werewolf novels. I read it a couple weeks ago and man… this one is WILD. • Those Across The River takes place in the Georgia in the 1930’s. The writing definitely made you feel the time period, that’s for sure… lot of n-words, which I guess was normal for the back then, but it felt a little over the top at times. This book was also horny as hell at quite a few moments which was just kinda funny lol along with those two qualms, there were way too many “don’t care” characters and the pace was a bit disjointed. • Okay, knocked the “bad” out of the way. With the qualms noted, Those Across The River was still a pretty awesome book. I love werewolves and I absolutely love the way Buehlman set up the lore. The plot was fun and the werewolf scenes were violent as hell and stellar. Gimme a nasty transformation and it automatically gets big points from me. • Overall I definitely enjoyed Those Across The River and recommend you check it out too. I’m giving it a solid 4/5. Everything seemed cut from soft black velvet or gold or orange velvet.” • Have you ever read Ray Bradbury’s The Halloween Tree? • I reread this one last month as part of mine and matts_books.and.drams’s Bradbury Book Club — this chat is chaotic as hell but amazing. 😂 • Anyway, I read this one two years ago and honestly my feelings are roughly the same. It’s a good book and has impeccable Halloween/Spooky Season vibes, but it’s a little light, for me. This definitely feels YA or even younger at times — there’s nothing wrong with that, but it doesn’t do a whole lot for me. The ending was an interesting think-piece though, I will give it that. • Overall, I’m glad I revisited it and I loved hearing the other members’ thoughts. Do you have any romcom recomendations? ⠀ So I participated in another buddy read and love every single minute of it. We read The Love Hypothesis by Aly Hazewood. I have previously read this book and really enjoyed it so I just had to. ⠀ I think that everyone kind of know what this book is about, but in case you have been living under rock the quickest summary is: fake dating in STEM. ⠀ This time around I did like it a bit less than the first time around but it was a funny reading experience nevertheless. I think that it is because I already knew the story so I could focus more in another aspects, such as the absolute lack of communication that there is. I mean we are talking about full grown ups here and honestly THEY DON´T TALK and it is extremely frustrating. ⠀ I must say that I have so much fun with And trying to make Adam and Olive to PDA more often and how that brings the most abourd and funny situations. Después de unos meses complicados, estoy de vuelta. Y que mejor que una recomendación para empezar 😉 Mi primera lectura del año fue esta preciosidad 💚 Conocí a @alexandrachristowrites en su novela anterior, Matar un reino (situada en el mismo mundo que ésta) un retelling de La sirenita un tanto oscuro y absolutamente fascinante. Así que imaginaos mi emoción al saber que @grantravesia nos traía este segundo libro de la autora, un retelling de Rapunzel de lo más original e igual de oscuro y fascinante (puede que incluso más). Puedo parecer exagerada, pero es que lo disfruté muchísimo y solo puedo decir cosas buenas de él. No solo me sacó de un gran parón lector, si no que me dejó con ganas de más. Have you ever read Bram Stoker’s Dracula? • I reread this one for Spooky Month and I loved it again. This 3rd go at Stoker’s iconic classic was such an awesome experience. His writing is definitely hard to get used to, and that classic gothic style, especially his, is slow, but for me it made sense, for this book. • Dracula is a methodical novel. The early goings have some amazing creepy scenes and then the book falls into a lull… but not really — there’s actually so much happening and so much set up for the final confrontation. It’s incredibly well done, imo. • Dracula’s plan was so dark and then he got cocky and ended up messing with the wrong people. When you’re that old, you don’t think it possible to be stopped. • I also loved all the Renfield scenes. So disturbing and creepy. All the bug/critter eating was so nasty but so good lol • Overall Dracula is a solid 5/5 from me. Happy Halloween, nerds! 🎃👻 • Have you all watched flanaganfilm’s The Fall of the House of Usher yet? • I finished it Sunday night and holyyyyy shit — I mean I’m not surprised, but Flanagan has done it again. • Usher was an absolute blast. Creepy and unsettling as hell while also being funny and just so damn awesome. Every actor absolutely ate up their parts and the visuals were stunning. • It doesn’t top Midnight Mass — idk if anything will, tbh. It is very close to Hill House though, imo. • I didn’t get a chance to read all of the stories mentioned/included/alluded to… yet lol but I loved the references I did catch (and I felt I caught most of them). • What was your favorite episode? “My grandpa was a werewolf.” • I recently read Stephen Graham Jones’s incredible short story collection, After The People Lights Have Gone Off, and one of those stories later became a piece — a very important piece — of my favorite SGJ novel, Mongrels. • The story in question, Doc’s Story, is about a boy listening to his Aunt and Uncle tell him a story about his Grandfather — this story ends up circling around to the boy’s mother. This story is so good and ends up being so damn sad. It definitely brought me to tears and I had already read this bit during both of my Mongrels reads… which I also cried in lol • In a way, Mongrels is a bunch of short stories too, but more like vignettes and they are all connected. En ce qui concerne l'histoire, le premier volume n'est qu'un tome introductif mais que j'ai trouvé très bien fait. On commence à comprendre comment fonctionne Elle et ses différentes personnalités. Le pays est en ébullition, les Jesis se préparent aux cérémonies et l'un des 7 frères commence à douter du bien fondé de leur réligion. Sujets de fond interessants, on est sur une critique plus ou moins deguisée de la société, des croyances religieuses, de l'endoctrinement avec tout ses aspects liés aux manipulations des plus simples au plus grosses (quand tout un état s'y donne à coeur joie😅). I love the god/guided ones, the white hand and how Deka mother gets introduced and linked in, with the biggest challenge she's faced, if she doesn't live all her friends won't surrive. I so wasn't ready to let all the characters go but the ending was emotional yet fitting to wrap up the series. Have you ever read Whalefall by Daniel Kraus? • I finished this one last week and it was absolutely fantastic. I went in completely blind aside from a few recommendations and those recs were spot on. • This book was a beautifully emotional gut-punch. I loved every second of it and it broke my heart so many times. A short, fast-paced, and shockingly heartfelt and graphic story that will blow you away and break your heart in two — in the best way. • If you haven’t read Whalefall yet, I highly recommend you do so, yesterday. Sky-in-the-Eye was a massive binge read for me. Immediately, I was immersed in Jimmy's world. AD:PR Starting with tragedy hitting Jimmy and his family at the age of 5, you then follow him through his life. From his newfound skills, friendships, love, battles, and old age. The book is split into two, first being early life and coming of age secondly where he settles. I liked the break, as it did feel as though I was reading the sequel to his next adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, I couldn't believe how quickly I flew through it. The story just flows perfectly. I even had a few tears throughout. The friendships were strong, and the story was a rollercoaster of emotions but fantastic! Highly recommend, but warning some details are quite graphic! Nie jest to jednak koniec następstw, które spotkały go po tych strasznych przeżyciach, ponieważ chłopak stał się tak zwanym widzącym. Umiejętność ta pozwala mu nie tylko widzieć duchy, ale może również się z nimi kontaktować. A tak się składa, że Charlie mieszka w Yorku, czyli jednym z najbardziej nawiedzonych miast. Pewnego dnia Charlie poznaje nowego widzącego w mieście, Sama, który prosi go o pomoc w rozwiązaniu tajemnicy znikających duchów. "Sixteen Souls" to pierwszy tom młodzieżowej serii o tym samym tytule autorstwa popularnej booktokerki. Już po skończeniu książki mogę stwierdzić, że moje odczucia co do tego tytułu są mieszane. Z jednej strony dostałam to czego oczekiwałam, czyli lekką powieść z romansem oraz dreszczykiem grozy. Natomiast z drugiej nie do końca mogłam zaangażować w opisaną historię oraz niestety nie zżyłam się z bohaterami. Sam pomysł na fabułę, w której mamy do czynienia z duchami żyjącymi w nawiedzonym mieście oraz bohaterami, którzy mogą się z nimi kontaktować jest dosyć ciekawy. Na plus oceniam również nadnaturalne elementy, które zostały przedstawione w całkiem mroczny sposób oraz romans między naszymi bohaterami, który określiłabym raczej jako delikatny. Niemiej to wszystko nie wystarczyło, abym zakochała się w tym tytule.
