🇱🇾 Book Review 🇱🇾 5⭐️ “…no matter how weak, unimportant, poor, restricted or unfree our lives might appear to be, it is impossible for us to pass through this earth without leaving a mark.” My Friends is as close as you’re going to get to the perfect novel. Everything from the storyline, writing, and characters is first-class - I couldn’t put this book down! I know we haven’t quite hit the middle of the year, but I can confidently say that, so far, this is my favourite read of 2024. This is a story about Khaled, a Libyan student who wins a scholarship to study at the University of Edinburgh. Khaled leaves his home and family behind and creates a new life with friends abroad. In a moment of haste, Khaled is talked into travelling to London by his friend, Mustafa, to join a demonstration in front of the Libyan embassy. Khaled and Mustafa are shot in broad daylight - this incident changes the friends’ lives forever. As the book’s title suggests, this is a story about male friendship - that is defined by cultural familiarity and a shared history. This friendship needs to be unpicked - good thing I had @sowhat_books to unpick this with! In addition to the theme of friendship, is the theme of free will and moral responsibility. As the narrator, Khaled, reminds readers about his friends, family and acquaintances. However, I was left focussing on Khaled’s approach to life and what was happening around him. “…though Benghazi was the one place I longed for the most, it was also the place I most feared to return.” “…life to him seemed more an idea than a reality.” If you loved John Williams, Stoner, this book is going to be right up your alley - I got strong Stoner vibes from this. I knew it was going to absolutely wreck me and I had to be ready for it. Now...was reading this book on a 10 hour flight to France the smartest choice? No. No it wasn’t. Thankfully, it was the middle of the night so most didn’t see me sobbing into my paperback. This book....was absolutely phenomenal. I can’t get over how I had the entire range of emotions. I literally couldn’t put it down and didn’t get a minute of sleep on the plane because I literally couldn’t tear my eyeballs from the page. It was just..perfect. I tend to space out Jennifer’s books because I think I will absolutely distraught when the day comes that I don’t have anything left to read of hers on my shelf. I know my review doesn’t give a ton of details but I truly feel like you should go into this book as blind as possible. If you have triggers, please check them. But I will forever hold these two in my heart. My friend, I’m just in awe of you. This book was just....everything I could possibly hope to get from you. Holding The Man by Timothy Conigrave is mine 💜 It’s one of my most re-read books and has a really special place in my heart. (The film adaptation is great too!) It’s a memoir following Tim from school days to his early 30s. It’s an unflinchingly honest account of his experiences growing up gay in 1970 and 80s Australia. It’s funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking (much of it takes place during the AIDS pandemic). Yet, most of all it’s a tribute to his childhood sweetheart and partner, John Caleo. 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 by @janewashingtonbooks! ♾⭐ Wow. This book has consumed my every waking thought. I've been eating, living, breathing, and dreaming everything Ironside. I am in the biggest book-hangover. Normally a book this size would've taken me 7 days to finish..I did it in less than 2. Although, this series isn't normal because it's spectacular in every way. The writing flows amazingly and keeps you engaged through every chapter. I don't know how third person could feel like first person with multiple POVs. It's done so nicely that I feel something for all eleven main characters. I am so obsessed with them. From the very first group chat that took me out with a huge smile and happy tears to the halfway point that left me in a pile of devastating ones. I've never had a book cause such physical reactions throughout the story. I actually cried happy, angry, and sad tears. Nevermind all the blushing I did from these alpha-possessive males. Overall book 4 was an incredible installment to this series and this story keeps getting better and better. The giddiness I feel with this series makes it my number one thus far. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I typically do a synopsis prior to my review but honestly any plot summary will without a doubt spoil this mind blowing book. Going in blind is such a wild ride and experience that I wouldn’t want to ruin that for anyone else. This was my first Blake Crouch book and I have had it on my tbr for quite sometime. Now here I am after finally finishing this book thinking to myself this will without a doubt go down as one of my most favorite reads of the year! While the plot is a mind bending science fiction thriller Crouch has a way of making the book easy to consume and engaging, so that even readers who don’t typically consume science fiction works are still able to thoroughly enjoy this book. I truly never felt bored while reading this. The twists and tension are perfectly executed keeping you at the edge of your seat. I will say at the heart of this book is the exploration of what it means to be truly happy in your life and if you had made different choices would you be happier. This thought provoking intense science fiction novel is a must read and will be a forever recommendation that I give to everyone! ✒️ Avis de lecture ~ Livre 20 Étant une "âme sensible", je n'ai jamais été fan de romans d'horreur. Il m'arrive parfois vouloir titiller mes émotions et les mettre à l'épreuve. Quand cela m'arrive, je me tourne plutôt vers les romans dystopiques. Mais l'horreur, pas vraiment ma tasse de thé. Or, étant aussi très sensible aux critiques littéraires et cinématographiques, j'ai fini par céder à la tentation de regarder The Shining, de Stanley Kubrick. Dans mon souvenir, l'univers singulier de Kubrick a rendu le film moins effrayant qu'il aurait pu l'être. J'ai donc trouvé le courage de tenter l'expérience littéraire de "The Shining". Spoiler alert : j'ai achevé la lecture du livre 3 ans après l'avoir commencé. On l'a dit et re-dit, mais la littérature a le pouvoir de démultiplier notre imaginaire. Les descriptions d'un livre nous ouvre les portes vers une imagination sans limite. Et lors d'une lecture d'un roman d'horreur, je peux vous dire qu'elle va très loin. Je n'ai pas été capable de lire ce livre en soirée, encore moins seule. Je le lisais que lorsque le soleil brillait ou qu'il y avait quelqu'un avec moi. Mais il y a certains passages tellement effrayants que j'ai préféré mettre le livre de côté et l'oublier. J'y revenais quelques fois, mais je lisais les pages au compte-gouttes. Et cela a duré pendant 3 ans. 😂 Je n'ai pas vraiment de retour à faire sur l'histoire du livre. Cela reste tout de même assez "classique". Un père alcoolique qui est recruté en tant que gardien à l'Overlook Palace, un hôtel luxueux situé dans les montagnes, pendant le grand hiver. Seul avec sa famille, coupé du monde, dans un lieu où il se passe des choses étranges et où les fantômes semblent prendre le contrôle de la demeure. Mon appréciation est purement basé sur la capacité de King a susciter de la peur. Et ma réponse sera celle-ci : je comprends totalement pourquoi Joey gardait ce livre au congélateur 😂 (coucou a ceux qui ont la référence). ✨️🏛 THE PROPHETS 🏛✨️ ALL THE STARS for a book I am still trying to find the words for. What a triumph for someone to write a book so harrowing and yet so gorgeous - I couldn't tear my eyes away! Written from an omniscient POV but with chapters from different perspectives, this book pulls you in from the beginning with a huge sense of foreshadowing and foreboding. We are lead to feel that we are the narrator but also like the narrator is talking directly to us. Don't get me wrong, this book is deep and hard but also leaves room for tiny moments of rebellion through humour, gentleness, human decency and connection. The representation and understanding of girlhood and womanhood is out of this world and the internal dialogue that we are made privy to, makes the book multidimensional in ways I wasn't expecting going into it. The book is definitely unsettling and I would recommend buddy reading it in small chunks but sooo worth it! THIS BOOK DESERVES ALL THE HYPE. We Shall Be Monsters by Tara Sim 5 richly, dark stars! I absolutely loved this one! It gave me all the gothic vibes I craved, as well as the Frankenstein influences I was promised. It was darkly vibrant, full of mythology, dreamlike storytelling, and characters I couldn't get enough of! I couldn't put it down! Tara Sim crafted such a beautifully unique story that captured my imagination and flew with it. It's been a while since I was really able to visualize what was happening in my mind as I was reading. We Shall Be Monsters read like a horror comic full of color, feels, and just the right amount of comedy. The last several chapters had me tearing up. No spoilers, but just because of the twists and turns in the story telling. The entire book centered around, not only the theme of good vs evil but, the theme of balancing good and evil, darkness and light. It was multi - faceted and woven so vibrantly and intricately. Beyond the multi-layered plot, the well developed characters, and the dark beauty of the story, what I loved the most is that this one didn't feel like a typical young adult book. It didn't make me feel like I was too old to be enjoying it. It gave me Lord of the Rings meets Willow and Thriller vibes, where there were bits of horror and fantasy to be enjoyed for most ages. Sky-in-the-Eye was a massive binge read for me. Immediately, I was immersed in Jimmy's world. AD:PR Starting with tragedy hitting Jimmy and his family at the age of 5, you then follow him through his life. From his newfound skills, friendships, love, battles, and old age. The book is split into two, first being early life and coming of age secondly where he settles. I liked the break, as it did feel as though I was reading the sequel to his next adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, I couldn't believe how quickly I flew through it. The story just flows perfectly. I even had a few tears throughout. The friendships were strong, and the story was a rollercoaster of emotions but fantastic! Highly recommend, but warning some details are quite graphic! A Thousand Boy Kisses - @authortilliecole ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️+ Read this back in September 2023 and didn’t post a review, but now’s the time as the second book is coming out this July !! Calling all romance / sad romance lovers - add this to your TBR ! This book left me feeling like I’ll never be the same person again. I feel like I just have a hole in my heart now permanently. I still think of the main characters Poppy and Rune every once in a while. Also, I listened to the ‘Thousand Boy Kisses’ Spotify playlist all week to and from work after reading this , just soaking in the misery and sadness. I’m legit obsessed with this book. Tillie Cole has written this book in such a spectacular manner making it truly an unforgettable read. The writing is beyond beautiful and the way she created these characters is honestly astounding. You’re instantly in love with the characters right from page one where you are introduced to them when they are 5 years old, right up until the very end. The constant rush of emotions was so raw and real that I can’t even put into words how I felt reading this. I completely bawled my eyes out reading this - like I’m talking FULL HEARTBREAK UGLY CRYING. There’s only ever been one other book in which I cried like a baby to and that was Colleen Hoover’s ‘All Your Perfects’ , but damn ‘A Thousand Boy Kisses’ definitely knocked that book down a notch and took the overall trophy of saddest and most memorable book I’ve ever read. I cannot give this book enough praise, I could go on and on about it. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND. Go read it when you’re in need of a good cry and wanting to read a love story like no other. I don’t normally cry while reading… but this book had me bawling. This was a hard fight to get to the happy ending, which made this story for me. The emotions that Shae was able to pull out of me from her writing was mind blowing. We follow Theo and Bailey. These two have lived very different lives. Where Theo is all sunshine and happiness, Bailey is dark and broken. These two meet when Theo ends up in the hospital after a hockey injury & Bailey ends up being his nurse. She tries ignoring him but he gives her no option but to become his friend. I really love these two FMC together. The bond and chemistry that they had made me fall in love with them so easily. Baileys thinks her past with her ex has ruined her future, but the way Theo is there for her through everything melted my heart because he shows her want love should be. The topics in this book lean on the heavier side. It isn’t a dark romance but it does have dark topics so please keep that in mind. But this is a book I feel like everyone should read. It’s a beautiful love story that comes from Baileys darkest moments. 📚🇵🇸 THE HUNDRED YEARS’ WAR ON PALESTINE - RASHID KHALIDI 🇵🇸📚 Today is #NakbaDay which commentates the Nakba of 1948, which was a destruction of homeland which led to a large displacement of Palestinians. I just finished Khalidi’s comprehensive history book that covers the hundred year span from the Balfour Declaration in 1917 up to 2017, including the Nakba. It is a difficult read to understand the impacts of history that continue to roll out today, such as the events of 1948, and to read some of the author’s somewhat prophetic warnings. Knowing that families and individuals who have lost their lives in the past 7 months may become numbers in a future history book such as this one is a difficult thing to reckon with, but obviously nowhere near as difficult as the experiences of those currently living through an assault on their home or occupation. This is a somewhat dense book with a lot of names and policies to keep track of, however I found it very comprehensive and extremely useful for putting many of today’s ills into context. The author was very open and honest about his own family’s connections with much of the events of the last century. He also shared criticisms of many sides of the issue and didn’t hold back from recognising how decisions made by political leaders from all paths have ranged from not good enough to disastrous. Khalidi has been a vocal proponent of the student protests, reflecting his views in the book that a grassroots change is necessary. Swipe for some highlighted passages. Have you read this book?
