It’s labelled as a #horror and whilst there are some #creepy parts to the #story I’m not sure I’d class it as one. The story is great however at building #suspense #mystery and tension. The story isn’t linear, so there is a bit of movement in the storyline but I thought this only added to the story. Overall, whilst we didn’t get all the answers I was hoping for, it was an excellent #read 4 stars from me. Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka 📖 Ansel Packer is scheduled for execution in 12 hours, for murders he committed over 20 years ago. This novel is a countdown and a reflection from Ansel, as well as accounts from the perspectives of the women who were impacted. This is an interesting take on giving a voice to the serial killer, the victims, and the women who are brought together as a result of Ansel’s actions. We meet Lavender, a 17-year-old who is pushed to make a desperate decision; Hazel, the twin sister to Ansel’s wife, Jenny; and then there is Saffy, a detective who is determined to bring justice for Ansel’s victims. The storytelling alternates between these perspectives which provides a series of interactions between the characters over decades. I personally didn’t feel gripped or connected to the characters, but the themes of morality, good and evil, and humanity were explored within the confines of Ansel’s impending end through capital punishment, leading to interesting insights on the prison system and rehabilitation. I’ve seen lots of reviews praising this novel, so I think it’s one to read if you’re a crime thriller fan!

My Thoughts 💭 I take back what I said about reverse Harem! They aren't yuck!! This one is a masterpiece!!! I didn't think I'd ever call anything with multiple love interests good, but this book changed my perspective. I just love Roxanne. She's smart, strong and beautiful. She was kidnapped as a debt her father owed the vipers (four mouthwatering MMCs) and not only does she survive them she ends up ruling them!! Talk about girl power!! This one is the best!! Not only Roxy. I loved how each of the guys had their own personal characteristics. They are all so different yet Same. And well… It's like reading four different romance novels… enemies to lovers, obsessive love, sweet love and dominating love. It's just amazing!! I was pleasantly surprised when Roxy was introduced. In diesel’s pov, he is sure they're going to be the death of their new toy. I kinda expected Roxy to be this timid little mouse who changes them by the good in her heart. But here she is threatening them and wrapping them around her little finger. It's refreshing. I definitely would suggest this one as a must read! Buddy read with @a_thousand_little_lands for May/June Book 28 of 2024: "Under the Whispering Door" by T.J. Kline I'm hauled up in bed today feeling shit so reading is my choice of medicine. I've just finished this, my buddy read with Chloe for May/June so I don't feel like today has been a total waste. I loved it so much. In life Wallace Price is a bit of a twat and after his death he is collected by a reaper and taken to a strange little tea shop. The owner Hugo is tasked with helping him accept his death and helping him to cross over to the afterlife. Whilst in Hugo's company he meets an array of different characters who all end up teaching Wallace the meaning of life but is it too late for Wallace to dream of a happy ending? I loved this it's really quaint, there's heartbreaking moments and other points that are really precious. I've never cried at a story before but this was close, I friggin' loved Apollo the dog ... his ending melted me. 💖 I liked the writing style of this one too dead easy going, nice easy read. A #tbrtalk and #whatthisweek : I've been trying to find the calm in the chaos in the shape of bookshops, cafes, and therapy sessions. As for my reading - there are so many titles that I want to prioritise because of ARCs, monthly prompt readathons, borrowed books, etc., but I've realised a commonality in themes of grief, trauma, illness, which is hitting a bit too close to home for me right now. And so I recently halted all my reading and re-examined my tbr shelf choosing books that aren't so heavy and dark. ✨🌞 its a good day to have a good day 🌞✨ happy sunny sunday and welcome to a #whatthisweek !!!! this week has been full of sunshine, my longest run yet of 10k, going to a hot pot restaurant, starting a reread of acotar, focusing on myself, a solo cinema date, coffee & pastry trips, 3x runs, receiving beautiful bookmarks, buying holiday outfits, getting excited for my road trip with marty, reformer recovery & a conditioning class - we’ve been active this week ❣️ 📖 what i’ve been reading: this week i finished good bad girl by Alice Feeney, which means i have now completed her backlist! it was SO good, i gave it a 4.5⭐️ and thoroughly enjoyed it! so excited to read her latest ‘beautiful ugly’ coming out soon. then instead of reading one of the 85 remaining books on my shelf i decided to restart acotar because WHY NOT?! and it’s everything i wanted and more. loving it so much more this time around 🧚🤍 🎞️ what i’ve been watching: as the sun has been shining, i’ve actually not been watching much TV at all! Tonight i’m going to the cinema to see ‘the strangers chapter 1’ on my own as i love a horror solo cinema trip! also the first film terrified me as a child so i’m so excited for this 🍿 🎧 what i’ve been listening to: i have been continuing on my audiobook hype by finishing the first 3 of the Thursday Murder Club series & i’m obsessed with it, admittedly those were rereads so i’m really excited to read book 4 which i’ve never read! i also started the family experiment by John marrs and it’s set in the metaverse, very different to what I’d normally listen to but i’m enjoying! it’s been a jam packed week, work has been absolutely crazy and my acheudke outside work just as busy but this weekend I’ve switched off and just made lots of time for me, myself & i ❣️🤍✨ hope you’ve all had a wonderful weekend, only a few days until a very long one for us in the UK!

Duchess Goldblatt is a memoir that chronicles the imaginary romps of Duchess Goldblatt paralleled with the real author’s story of love, grief, motherhood, and loneliness. It’s a perfect balance. DG was at her height during the pandemic giving hope to many from her imaginary hometown of Crooked Path. So many nuggets of wisdom are tucked in the pages of this book. The Boy I Hate, Taylor Sullivan 📚Time to compete: 6.5 Hours 📚What sucked me in: the tension between FMC and MMC. 📚My favourite things: I started this book yesterday morning and by yesterday afternoon I really needed a snack and a nap. This is a quick ready that takes you from present day to the past to truly make connections through in the story as it progresses. The MMC reads like he was written by a man with his responses which has a refreshing sense of realism to it. I’m not typically one for the slow burn but I was very into it in this book. On Wednesday I went to an event at @waterstonesliverpool where you were given a Murdle sheet and had to walk round to meet the 3 suspects, my head basically fell off as I need to sit down to concentrate in peace to do murdle. My brain couldn’t process going up to strangers to ask for clues and then write them down in all the excitement so I left a bit earlier. The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell Set in 16th Century Italy, this book focuses on the short life of Lucrezia de Medici Duchess Consort or Ferrera Modena. This was a very interesting read with lots of fine details. You can appreciate the amount of research that must have gone into it. I enjoyed the characters, and Lucrezia dastardly husband, Duke Alfonso, is truly despicable while Lucrezia herself is strong and defiant. For the most part, I enjoyed this, but I did get a little confused with the time lapses, as sometimes they were set very close together. I found myself getting slightly confused sometimes until I realised. 'Seamark' by Cari Z ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A beautiful short romance, with dragons, village politics, amnesia, war, love and a dash of spice. This was a well written story, with an intriguing background, good balance of action and romance, and seemingly impossible love. I liked the characters, they were realistic and varied, except perhaps the mad chief who snapped out of it at the sound of cannons? Still, over all, well thought out and executed. I really enjoyed the world built here, with sea dragons having had to flee their home due to human attacks, a mad chieftan kept out of respect for his wife, a creative people stifled and forced into practicality. The humans' new attacks on them weren't ever explained, but it created an excitement and tension throughout the book which allowed for the plot to build. With training and bonding and fighting and worrying on one side and caring, curing and budding love on the other. I liked that the MC was an artist, with a kind heart, and his brother was a warrior, with a heart that needed opening. I loved his best friend, a warrior, pining for his fellow, carrying the weight of a mad father and an angry mother, yet he was still kind and thoughtful. The lover was harder to properly gauge, we didn't get much of his context due to his amnesia, we didn't even know his species until the end, but he was strong and willing to teach what he remembered, wanting to help MC, even while weary of his reception. This was an enjoyable short story, with action, friendship, romance and an interesting world. What You Are Looking for is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I have issues on how Ms. Komachi was described, repeatedly, all throughout the book, but I can't deny that I enjoyed this book and that it is another heartwarming read. I was inclined to choose either between the 1st or the 2nd story because I thought, I am in that point of my life right now so I should choose them, but there are parts in the 4th and 5th story that just resonates with where I am emotionally. Book 15/30: The Idea of You by Robinne Lee. WOO - halfway to my reading challenge!!!!!! When I heard Mia Thermopolis and Prince Henry were starring in the movie adaptation, it shot to the top of my TBR list. I wish I loved this as much as I thought I would. I don’t know if it was because I opted for the audiobook or what, but I found both characters just like soooo unlikeable. I usually love an unlikeable character, so no one is more shocked than I am! I think I also would have liked it more if Solène weren’t so well off. On the one hand, it puts them more on equal footing, but I don’t know. Book 14/30: Funny Story by Emily Henry was delightful! It may be my favorite EmHen novel to date (and I loved Beach Read and Book Lovers)! It hit so many of the right notes, and not just because I’m a gal who loves her calendar and is a bit rigid and SO close to her mom. Miles is everything to me, Petra and Peter are the WoOoOoOorst, and the rest of the characters are delightful. I would’ve loved a little bit more about Miles and Julia’s family, but that’s really my only complaint! I loved it! Book 13/30: Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros. Once Fourth Wing consumed my whole life, I needed the next one and Libby delivered. There’s a lot of criticism around this one, and maybe it’s because I went the audiobook route, but I really enjoyed it! It’s a little long and could use some tightening up (or fleshed out and split into two books), but I didn’t think it was a noticeable step down from Fourth Wing. I like that these characters are messy, whether it’s intentional or not and I am absolutely obsessed with Tairn and Andarna. I do wish there was more explanation after the cliffhanger from Fourth Wing, and I do feel that there were some missed opportunities to connect Violet’s “nightmares” (they’re definitely not nightmares, right?) and that mid-book twist - and even the ending! I can’t say enough good things about Rebecca Soler as the audiobook narrator - I NEED her to do the whole series. And Teddy Hamilton is always the perfect coda.
