Nevím proč, ale celou dobu jsem měla pocit, že autorem je muž, a že děj se odehrává v dávnější době než 80. léta 20 století. Byla jsem překvapená popisem doby: the times were raw, one could lose everything. This story is dedicated to the women and children who suffered time in Ireland’s mother and baby homes and Magdalen laundries. The sentence that “These nuns have a finger in every pie…” is obviously explaining their immense influence and power. Rather surprisingly, there were no frictions about Protestant and Catholic religion in Mrs. Wilson’s house as “beliefs on both sides were lukewarm.” However, at the end, the author uses the word “Christian” as a measure of one’s braveness to “go against what was there” and be able to face oneself in the mirror. Also, the description of Furlong’s “happiness” as “some fresh, new, unrecognizable joy in his heart” while saving the poor girl is appealing to me. But still, my most favorite part is how Furlong pondered the idea of another life he could have had with another wife/family: “He was inclined to imagine another life, elsewhere … it seemed both proper and at the same time deeply unfair that so much of life was left to chance.” I am truly surprised that book was awarded several prizes including the one for Political Fiction. I read the story more as a fight of an individual against social prejudices, system and one’s own cowardice, rather than as ‘pure’ political fiction. I cried fat ugly tears over this book. #uglylove is a tough read especially for a new mom like myself. It’s odd for me at this time to have started and finished this book while raising a 5 month year old daughter. Especially because I was gifted this book a year ago. I really enjoy reading #colleenhoover. I think her books tackle tough emotions and address uncomfortable situations. She captures the complicated human experience with such skill and ease through her storytelling. I would recommend Ugly Love. Miles is a complicated character that you can’t help root for. Tate is a fun chapter that feels a little naive but not in a negative way. More like a character who is hopeful and not yet pessimistic. Her heart is not harden by sorrow or pain. She wants to help Miles heal but feels defeated by not knowing how to. But Miles’ journey in finding peace and accepting love again can only happen once he learns how love can be both beautiful and ugly. Ava, the main character, was quite annoying and her treatment of Jack was unnecessarily harsh. Even though her ex-fiancé was terrible, Ava didn’t handle that relationship well either. Despite these, I enjoyed the vibrant scenes set in Belize and the intriguing insights into the life of a flight attendant. Recuerda su vida pasada en el Japón de después de la guerra con el trauma de la bomba tan cercana en el tiempo. Un relato lleno de sutileza que sugiere muchísimo y explica poco. Una atmósfera de contrastes, entre los brumosos paisajes ingleses y los descampados embarrados y llenos de insectos de Nagasaki... Ele é bem curtinho e rapidinho eu terminei. Gostei bastante da história e é bem interessante o assunto que se trata, não tenho o que reclamar dele, algumas coisas que eu não sabia como "alexitimia", explicou bem direitinho como é essa doença mental e como a pessoa reage e isso me chamou bastante atenção. O desenvolver dos personagens amei demais foi muito bom e muito legal de se ver. Quem nunca leu eu recomendo ler, fala sobre essa doença ( a incapacidade de indentificar e expressar sentimentos), e dos traumas da infância e das amídalas menores do cérebro. De como o personagem foi se desenvolvendo até começar a sentir emoção das pessoas. I am back. Life is not being kind to me lately. I am having major liver issues from following the diet of my previous doctor. And I’m two kinds of insulin and ozempic. I also have a severe rash on the back of my thighs that will not go away. So I’m constantly exhausted. My entire life was flipped upside down with this diabetes diagnosis. But I’m taking to the diet well. As for reading, I honestly haven’t been reading much at all. I plan to change that. Got a few fun books here for Pride month. Mostly sapphic romance. Obiecałem Ci gwiazdy- Weronika Schmidt Książką „Obiecałem ci gwiazdy” to historia Maddy i Noah. Tych ludzi całkiem przypadkiem połączyła wyjątkowa przyjaźń ale nie na długo. Po czterech latach życia bez przyjaciela z dzieciństwa Maddy w ostatniej klasie liceum spotyka go ponownie. Niestety Noah nie jest tym samym kochającym i wspaniałym chłopakiem co kiedyś. W jego oczach góruje smutek i chłód. Maddy z całej swojej siły będzie próbowała naprawić tę przyjaźń. Czy uda jej się to zrobić? Pierwsze co napiszę na temat tej książki: typowa wattpadowa historia 1:1. Występują rzeczy jak woda kolońska itp. Mimo, że nie lubię tego typu książek to akurat ta jest wyjątkiem i to sporym. Pokochałam tę książkę po samym prologu. Bohaterowie są przezabawni i nie ukrywam kilka razy zdażyło mi się zaśmiać podczas czytania. Szybko ją przeczytałam aż w niecałe 2 dni. Jedyne minusy to niewyraźne literki i błędy w pisowni. Czasami myślałam czy autorka specjalnie napisała takie błędy. No i brak przecinków w co niektórych miejscach. Kolejny minusik, na tyle książki było napisane ostrzeżenie o zaburzeniach odżywiania. Ja niestety nic nie widziałam na ten temat. Jedyne dwie sceny i to koniec. Szkoda, że autorka tego nie rozwinęła bardziej. Szczególnie polecam tę książkę dla młodszych czytelników. Myślę, że im bardziej spodoba się tego typu książka i twierdzę, że przyjemnie będzie im się ją czytało. Mam nadzieję że również ją pokochacie tak jak ja ją pokochałam. Zachęcam do przeczytania. Everyone in my Family Has Killed Someone - Benjamin Stevenson 4/5 I’ve been slowly reading this for months - I’ve just been poor at finding time to read. But I was passed this book months ago after a strong recommendation, and I have to say it is a great book. Stevenson is such a clever writer and I absolutely loved the journey you were taken on. You follow Ern as he goes to his family reunion and ends up having to solve a murder - he goes through each character one by one about what they’ve done and who’ve they killed but whether that relates to who murdered the character at the beginning of the reunion you won’t know till the end. (SPOILERS..I think) Well well well, I FINALLY got around to doing a little review of this beauty 💞 🩷💜🩵🩷💜🩵🩷💜🩵🩷💜🩵🩷💜🩵🩷💜🩵🩷💜🩵🩷💜 I enjoyed Crown of Midnight wayyyyyy more than Throne of Glass. Celaena goes through a ton of personal growth and I love seeing her become more emotionally vulnerable, especially with Chaol 🥹 And that big reveal at the end, kicking myself for not thinking it was possible LMAO🤣 This one was just the right pacing for me. Faster than ToG for sure, but slower than some other books I’ve read. I’d give 5/5⭐️ @sarahjmaas definitely has me hooked now, and I’m in it for the long haul 🫡
🌿Graphic Novel: Vrije Vlucht: Laat Mijn Hand Niet Los - Fred Duval, Michel Bussi & Didier Cassegrain🌿 Dit is denk ik de eerste graphic novel-thriller die ik las en het was meteen een schot in de roos! Deze graphic novel is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige boek van schrijver Michel Bussi. Het speelt zich af op La Réunion, waardoor het me een beetje deed denken aan de politieserie Death in Paradise (wat zich ook op een paradijselijk eiland afspeelt). Het verhaal is heel spannend. Het zit vol twists en turns, die ik lang niet allemaal zag aankomen. Het verhaal zit goed in elkaar, zodat ik eigenlijk pas op het einde alle puzzelstukjes in elkaar kon leggen. De personages werden goed weergegeven. Ik heb soms het gevoel dat deze wat minder diep worden uitgewerkt in graphic novels, maar dat was bij deze absoluut niet het geval. Ik moest op het einde misschien zelfs een traantje wegpinken. De tekeningen zijn heel mooi en geven (ondanks het thriller-plot) ook voor een stuk de paradijselijke vibes weer. We lezen zowel stukjes vanuit het oogpunt van de politie als van de verdachte, wat ik ook altijd erg fijn vind. Een graphic novel leest meestal wel vlot, maar door deze ben ik echt heen gesprint. Ik vond dit een heel leuk boek! Ik gaf het dan ook 4,5⭐️.
