📚Book Review: Pine by Francine Toon This one didn’t have the wow factor for me unfortunately. It was a good storyline, but I just wasn’t crazy for it. I did like how the small town culture and how grief/torment can cause so much damage to a person is captured & portrayed. It was described as a gothic thriller and I had high hopes for it. I found it predictable in places, including the ending. Some areas in the story just seemed to lack the suspense and shock I was waiting for. Overall a good, easy to read story. Just wasn’t quite what I hoped it would be. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this one Blurb: They are driving home from the search party when they see her. ⭐️Review- Sunset Lake Resort by Joanne Jackson⭐️ Rating: 4 Stars Genre: Mystery Format: ARC Paperback Published: June 1st, 2024 by StoneHouse Publishing My Thoughts: I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. One of my goals has been to read more CanLit, since I live in Canada and this fit the bill perfectly. I’m a sucker for stories about old houses, in this case and cabin, with hints of mystery and we got that. Sunset Lake House also had a hit of paranormal but not so in your face that the story was lost. Joanne Jackson’s writing pulled me in and didn’t let me go until the end. Her pacing was perfect, I’ll admit sometimes I am a slim reader because of pacing and in this book I devoured every word. I love the ending and how we came full circle and learned more about Ruby and her family than she had ever known. And I liked that we did get some POV’s from the past sprinkled in. As for our characters, I felt so bad for Ruby. Essentially her whole life she lived with someone telling her what to do and how to do it. It took receiving this I’ll say blessing from her pretty much estranged father (whether he knew it was one or not) to get her to expand her world and be able to make her own decisions. I loved Wilson, I’m a sucker for old crochety men in stories and real life (haha I’m a nurse in geriatrics so I get my fair share). I want to say Steve and Robert suck big time. Missy was an interesting character too 😉 Overall this was a great read and I would recommend it to others. If you enjoy multiple timelines, mysteries and the smallest hint of paranormal then this is for you. Joanne Jackson I see you and I need more from you. What I didn’t like: 🐡clichéd phrases like “he tucked a strand of hair behind my ears” and “it felt like coming home” (maybe editors intentionally leave these corny lines in because that’s what romance readers want?) 🐡implausible premise 🐡too many details in intimate scenes (sometimes less is more—a cliché I like) . Overall, I wound up enjoying this rom/com and actually even teared up at the end—I’m a sap at heart. This book is in two parts, the first 1986 and a weekend, to remember in Manchester and 2017 between Scotland and London, but one thing remains constant, Tully and Noodles' friendship. The book is so nostalgic, poetic, and poignant. I ended it with tears in my eyes. How do they know what she writing? What if her family are next? We were hooked by this book and kept messaging each other our suspects. Every character felt like a suspect in one way or another! However towards the end when thinks started to conclude too many of the characters were involved and it got quite confusing! Wow, wat een prachtige recensies zeg. Ik krijg er helemaal rode oortjes van. Na 2 vervelende (ziekenhuis) weken nu gelukkig weer op de weg terug en volledig in de positiviteit met alles. 🇬🇧 REVIEW of The Luminaries by Susan Dennard I'll start by saying. Omg I want that turned into a movie! 😲✨️✨️✨️✨️ You can read what the book is about on the 4th picture of the post. I won't rate it with stars because I need more than 5 or 10. If you like dark fantasy books, with a mix of reality and magic, you choose the right book! I loved Wednesday. She accomplished what she wants but not the way she wanted. She had a lot of courage to do everything she did and I see her kid of like another Katniss for me. Jay is hiding something I think! His character is really nicely written but I think he knows more than what he says he knows. Hopefully this will be developed in book 2. Emma and Bretta are just lovely twins that add a little touch of happiness in this gloomy neighborhood. I liked them so much as they always treated Winnie with respect whatever was her background. Mario too was a super nice character. You can see since his first apparition in the book that he's a nice guy just trying to help as much as he can. I,hope that we will see him as much in book 2. Overall it was one of my favorite reading of this year! I can say that I enjoyed it much more than what I thought I'd enjoyed it. Isso está presente aqui, já que os dois protagonistas são escritores, apesar de serem de gêneros bem diferentes. Temos capítulos com os pontos de vista dos dois, então podemos conhecer melhor o background de ambos durante a história. ⠀ ๑ Achei tanto Shane quanto Eva personagens bem construídos, que desde o início tem uma conexão que transcende seu tempo longe um do outro. Um dos focos do livro é essa relação, tanto no passado quanto no presente, já que eles se conhecem há 15 anos, mas temos outros temas mais importantes: conflitos da maternidade, como é ter uma doença crônica, além do cotidiano de autores negros vivendo num meio tão r@c!sta. ⠀ ๑ Gostei como foi mostrada a criação que Eva dá a filha, pois como ela mesmo sofreu muito no passado pelas atitudes da mãe, entende que precisa quebrar esse ciclo de abüs0. Achei interessante que também temos um foco na busca de Eva por seu passado, suas raízes, e como seus antepassados contribuíram para quem ela se tornou. Afinal, entender nossa família nos ajuda a entender um pouco mais sobre nós mesmos. ⠀ ๑ Claro que se faz presente o desenvolvimento do romance entre Shane e Eva, que precisaram amadurecer para conseguir ter uma relação saudável. Porém, se eu tivesse que resumir, acho que a história é muito mais sobre conexões familiares e superação de traumas do passado, tudo através de uma visão crua e sincera.
