Reading ft. this lil guy (he's three now!!) 🐶🤎 🌨️Small Things Like These🌨️ Bill Furlong is a simple and hardworking man, living in a sleepy Irish town. He pushes through life as a coal merchant and does his best to provide for his family. Around Christmastime, he makes a discovery at the local convent that forces him to reconsider what he knows of his hometown. Though a work of fiction, “Small Things Like These” was based on a real event that took place in Ireland at the time. While this historical event was horrific and I can tell what Keegan was driving at and the message she wants to put across, but I don’t think it was executed very well. The idea of it is better than what it turned out to be. (‼️POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD⚠️) I understand that seemingly insignificant gestures one receives over their life can spur one to take an even greater leap for something, or how small actions can save a life. But I think this is a gross oversimplification of the problem and sends the wrong message that change must come from an individual. While true in some sense, I believe there are some changes that needs to come from the top. To accept individual responsibility would be allowing governments and organisations to shirk theirs. For example, I believe there’s a very big difference between feeling sympathy for a homeless person, giving them food and/or money VS taking them home and assimilating them into your family just because you feel bad for them. This isn’t a stray animal we’re talking about… We should be holding governing bodies accountable and not doing the work for them just so we can feel better about ourselves. I don’t think that helps the overall problem at all. (‼️END OF POSSIBLE SPOILER⚠️) I think the only good thing I got out of this book was learning about this event that went on in Ireland between the 18th to late 20th centuries. Living in Southeast Asia, I would never have known something like that was going on in Ireland, a country I know close to nothing about. So I guess there’s that, at least. • Grade: C

Öyküdeki misojini temasının daha kalitelisi twitterda da dönüyor. Erkekler kapatılsın yazıp gülüyoruz ama edebiyatın bize daha iyi işlenmiş eserler vermesi gereken bir sanat olduğuna inanıyorum. Voilà ce qui se passait dans l’Irlande des années 80. J’ai aimé le personnage de Bill, ce père bienveillant envers ses cinq filles et sa détermination pour venir en aide à ses jeunes femmes. L’histoire s’arrête un peu brutalement au moment où Bill sauve une des jeunes filles d’une blanchisserie et la ramène chez lui. C’est dommage car l’histoire devenait intéressante et j’aurais aimé en savoir plus sur les raisons de son internement et les traitements qui lui étaient réservés. Néanmoins, ce livre m’a permis de comprendre une période historique irlandaise que je ne connaissais pas. Résumé: En cette fin de 1985, Bill Furlong, le marchand de bois et charbon, a fort à faire. Parmi ses commandes, une livraison pour le couvent voisin. Le bruit court que les sœurs y exploitent à des travaux de blanchisserie des filles non mariées et qu’elles gagnent de l’argent en plaçant à l’étranger leurs enfants illégitimes. L’épouse de Bill, Eileen, est d’avis que de telles choses ne les concernent pas. Un avis qu’il a bien du mal à suivre par ce froid matin de décembre, lorsqu’il reconnaît, dans la forme recroquevillée et grelottante au fond de la réserve à charbon, une très jeune femme qui y a probablement passé la nuit. Truth be told, I couldn’t be happier for this month to end. Had such a hard time, reading and otherwise. I’ve read only two books, but both being short stories that could be enjoyed in small sittings, they made me feel like I’d read something. Each story felt like a much needed win. Life is much brighter now, and I just wanted to acknowledge these two books that brought some measure of warmth and wonder into my life, so here goes. 🐇So Late in the Day by Claire Keegan I’ve never seen someone capture the essence of womanhood so beautifully and succinctly before. There is nothing superfluous about Keegan’s way of writing. No fancy words or convoluted sentences meant to draw attention to her skill at the expense of her story. It was that simplicity that instantly won me over, and considering how much I adore Woolf and her writing, it was quite a surprise and a good one. 🐇Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung I used to believe the Japanese were the masters of the bizarre and surreal until I read this Korean short story collection by Chung. Equal parts haunting and fascinating, the stories remind us there are monsters everywhere, even in plain sight, even if we can’t see them. Opinião ✒️ A Uma Hora tão Tardia - Claire Keegan Neste pequeno livro, Claire Keegan reúne três contos. Apesar das diferenças, é possível detectar alguns pontos comuns entre eles, essencialmente associados às relações humanas. É sabido que as nossas ações têm diversas consequências inerentes. Aqui, o que iremos descobrir, são as consequências associadas às três histórias: O primeiro conto, partilha o título com o livro «A Uma Hora tão Tardia». Durante um fim de semana, Cathal relembra um ex-relacionamento, remoendo no "e se". Keegan, aproveita o enredo criado para falar das relações que damos por garantidas, da dificuldade em partilhar a intimidade e criar um espaço comum. O certo é que as coisas podem mudar de forma repentina, mesmo que seja a uma hora tão tardia. «A Morte Lenta e Dolorosa» é o segundo conto. Como local da ação, temos uma casa à beira-mar que funciona como residência de escritores. Assim, a nossa protagonista será uma escritora que, durante a sua estadia, reflete sobre a sua carência afetiva e necessidade de aprovação, mesmo perante desconhecidos. Por fim, o terceiro e último conto é designado por «Antártida». Nele, uma mulher casada, questiona-se como seria estar com outro homem. Apesar do casamento aparentemente feliz, a dúvida corrói o seu âmago. Existe uma necessidade de quebrar a monotonia, arriscar, contornar e perceber limites. Assim, parte para uma aventura. Será o seu maior pesadelo? É inegável a capacidade que Keegan tem para descrever o espaço envolvente, cingindo-se apenas ao essencial. Considero que é uma tarefa árdua, esta de fazer o leitor viajar exclusivamente através das palavras. Mas a verdade é que Claire Keegan consegue fazê-lo magistralmente. Contudo, dos três livros que já li da autora ("Acolher", "Pequenas Coisas como Estas" e «A Uma Hora tão Tardia») este foi o que menos apreciei. Acho que foi precisamente por serem contos e ver o potencial de cada um deles para originar um livro individual. Ou seja, a vontade de querer ver as histórias mais esmiuçadas não é, necessariamente, um ponto negativo. 👀Rita

Nach einem scheinbar ereignislosen Tag im Büro nimmt Cathal den Bus nach Hause. Die Landschaft zieht an ihm vorüber, die waldigen Hügel, auf denen er noch nie gewesen ist, und er denkt an Sabine. Die ein bisschen schielt und die gut kochen kann, die auch im Winter barfuß am Strand spazieren geht, die die Hügel besteigt. Die zu viel Geld ausgibt und zu viel Raum einnimmt und zumindest über die Hälfte von allem bestimmen will. Die Frau, mit der er hätte leben können, wäre er ein anderer Mann gewesen. 기대가 만땅인데 받아보니 표지마저 넘 매력적이라~꺄~~
오늘 첫 단편, Antarctica 를 읽었다.

으로 시작하는 첫 문장이 어랏! 으른들 이야기구나~
도덕과 양심에 대해 간결하고 잔잔하지만 강한 여운을 남겼던 전작들을 생각했기에 좀 의외의 시작이었지만, 역시!!!
지난번 읽었던 장편 스릴러 소설인 "The Silent Patient" 보다
더 반전스럽다고 생각했는데,
같이 읽으신 멤버 한분은 결말이 예상됐다고...그렇더라도
키건식의 문장들엔 뭔가가 있다. 아님 내가 너무 작가한테 빠져서 다 좋아보이는걸수도 :) 남은 단편들도 기대^^

Claire Keegan, Small Things Like These What a beautiful, small thing this 110-page novella is. Set in 1985, Ireland, we follow Bill Furlong confront the complicit silence of his town, his wife, the church. Written about the Magdalen laundries and the abuse of women and children at the hands of the church, I could barely put this book down. The setting is so rich and evocative; the dialogue is near-audible; the story is compelling. It should have been on my TBR, given it was short-listed for the Booker in 2022, but a chance encounter with a complete stranger made me buy it on the spot and start reading. Böyle Küçük Şeyler - 1/2024 2024 ilk hafta ilk kitap🎄 84 sayfa, incecik bir kitap. İrlanda’da New Ross kasabasında ve Noel’de geçiyor. Kitabın kapağı çok nostaljik. Hani böyle bir kahve içimlik yalnız kalır da insan kendisiyle, iki yakasını zar zor bir araya getirdiği hayatını düşünür; aynı anda hem “iyi ki” hem de “keşke” gibi iki ayrı uçta salınırken düşünceleri, ne yapacağını bilemez, üstünü örter ve devam eder kaldığı yerden.
