I guess the cicadas read my fb post about loving them. There were 5 outside the backdoor last night. This morning there were more than 30!!!! Then I walked out the garage door and they were EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!! One hit James in the nose. One flew at my head as I walked around the car. Less than a week until my Celtic-cottage core Poe witch baby is out in the world, and I am not sure how to feel about it. Song of the Cicadas is one of those stories that forced me to go deep into those dark places inside myself that I don't normally like looking at too closely and face the ghosts that live there. Namely, mental health (I have dealt with anxiety for 8 years now and depression, anger management, and psychological abandonment issues since high school) and how it can affect us emotionally, spiritually, and physically. As someone who was raised in a very strict, traditional southern Baptist home, I was taught from an early age that good girls don't get angry or make a fuss. They push their feelings down, stay quiet, and smile pretty. On the one hand, that made writing this book cathartic, especially since I was coming out of an extremely traumatic relationship at the same time I was working on the early drafts. Kind of a revenge letter instead of a love letter, if you will. On the other, however, it makes me hesitant to set it free. True, Clare is a made up character, and her story is pure fiction. Yet this tale is such a raw look into the human psyche, the damage that other people can do to it, even if they don't intend to, and the consequences those damages can cause, that it has wound up being more terrifying than any ghoul or banshee I might meet crossing the moor at midnight. So, in the words of the immortal R.L. Stine, "Reader, beware. If you pick up this book, you're in for a scare." And the monster might not be under your bed or in your closet like you expect. Today's #sundaysnippet features the dedication for Song of the Cicadas. When I first wrote it, I needed Clare's story more than anything. It was an outlet, a way to express all of the pain, grief, heartache, and anger I was dealing with at the time. The people who knew what I was going through told me a lot of things: that my heartbreak wasn't relevant. My anger wasn't healthy. That I needed to let it go, move on, forget about it. And while I'm sure they meant well, they were dead wrong. My heartbreak was valid. My anger was valid, and suppressing it and pretending it didn't exist would have allowed it to fester and rot me from the inside out. Expressing my anger in a safe way (on paper) was the healthiest thing I could do for myself and my loved ones. And you can't let go, move on, or forget about something when you're up to your neck in it. You have to work your way out. This book was my way, my map to freedom. I had the pleasure of being an ARC reader for @authorlauraholt ‘s upcoming book, Song of the Cicadas! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wow, this story! I was drawn in from the first couple of pages. Laura Holt's writing has such a way that is rich, vivid, and lyrical, immersing you deeper and deeper into her characters' world. The first-person perspective is so convincing and detailed that I felt as though I were living out Clare's emotions and actions firsthand. Each supporting character was uniquely rounded out and had their own story to tell. The plot itself was gripping from beginning to end. A young red-haired witch who lives a life deeply connected to the nature around her on her piece of land is hit with the news that her fiancé has been presumed dead. While grappling with grief and dealing with the old prejudices of her town against her family, she launches into her own investigation when she feels that her fiancé had not simply gone missing, but had been murdered. Strange things begin to happen--shadows and footsteps with no owner, long-forgotten baubles suddenly finding their way into plain sight--which make Clare believe her gut even more. But as she gets closer to the truth, she learns details that she perhaps would have rather left covered up. It was a healthy mix of suspense, supernatural, romance and mystery.
