A teenager who stabbed a British mother to death after breaking into her Australian house has been sentenced to 14 years in prison. Emma Lovell, 41, was slain while confronting two intruders in Brisbane on Boxing Day 2022. She had immigrated from Suffolk in 2011 with her girls and husband, Lee, who was also injured in the incident. The criminal, who can not be legally identified since he was 17 at the time, pled guilty to her murder earlier this year. He also admitted to three other burglary and assault offences. Justice Tom Sullivan told the Brisbane Supreme Court on Monday that the man, now 19, had perpetrated a “particularly heinous” crime against the Lovells, whom he described as a “loving family” trying to make a life for themselves in a new nation. “They were ordinary individuals enjoying their family life in their own home, where they had the right to feel safe. What occurred… violated that completely.” Justice Sullivan noted that the offender had witnessed violence since an early age and began misusing drugs and alcohol at the age of 14 following the death of his grandmother. Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon’s criminal conviction has been affirmed by a federal appeals court. After years of legal battle, the decision could soon land 70-year-old Bannon in prison. In 2022, he was found guilty of contempt of Congress for not supplying the committee looking into the capitol riot on January 6th with records or testimony. Following that, Bannon was given a four-month prison sentence and a $6,500 (£5,833) fine. However, the right-wing podcaster was allowed to stay out of jail on bond while contesting his sentence. He has denied any criminal activity. Bannon was trying to work out a compromise rather than just reject the committee’s subpoenas, according to his lawyers, who also described the case as politically motivated. Last night, the Council wrapped up the busy week with the final installment of the International Perspectives Series titled "2024 Elections: Challenges Facing U.S. Foreign Policy" with David Kramer and Jason Galui of the George W. Bush Institute. From their perspective, U.S. relations with and response to Russia, Hamas, and China are the main factors facing the November election. That said, Kramer was clear that "our ability to support Ukraine is the most important factor in foreign policy today." Kramer posed the question "Why does U.S. global leadership matter?" The subject was "Indo-Pacific: How is the U.S. Navigating Troubled Waters?" featuring former U.S. Ambassador Kenneth I. Juster, in conversation with Council board member Abidali Neemuchwala, at Sidley Austin LLP. Ambassador Juster discussed the multicultural diversity of India, India's seriousness in the technology sector, and how much they value democracy; the U.S. may be the oldest, but India is the biggest democracy. A notable moment was when Ambassador Juster was asked if he would write a book, to which he promptly replied "no!" The Council concludes the IPS series TOMORROW with George W.
