💃🏻‼️Last week I held my first big presentation at an industry event; “How to prevent midlife derailing worklife”. ⚓️🚢 In an industry wanting to attract and retain more women, we can no longer avoid talking about perimenopause and the impact life transitions have on women in the workplace and how to prevent unnecessary exits. According to @deloitte latest “Women @ work 2024” Women feel even more “stressed and stretched” than last year. ❓What are my key learnings from this first big public speaking engagement? ✅ Nerves are ok! They’re a sign of caring. ✅ Allow all the physical and emotional feelings to come forth and ✅ Breathe (box breath 👍) ✅ Reminding yourself of the reason for stepping out of the comfort zone and onto the stage, makes it about the audience and not you! ✅ Well intended advice from others is exactly that : well meant! Occupation : The craft of Sal leaf plate making has huge potential as its eco-friendly, cheap, light weight and a big booster for green economy. Do you know more than 25,000 women in six districts of West Bengal - Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, Bardhaman, Birbhum & West Midnapore - make various items from Sal leaves and it is because of the large number of Sal trees present there. Women pick the leaves, stitch and mould Sal leaf plates and bowls. The crafts community, mostly comprising of women, who knew nothing beyond the periphery of their villages, could barely sign their names are now stepping, participating in fairs and festivals, earning a living as well as passing on their traditional skills to the younger generation. The Govt and many NGOs, Self Help Groups & Beneficiaries arrange training sessions and workshops in these areas to enhance their skills for stitching, moulding and packaging of Sal leaf plates and bowls. This is helping the women to support their families, their children’s education and ushering in a change story that is heartwarming.
