I would like to thank so many of you for being so patient while this year has taken my family and myself on a wild and devastating ride. You give me the space, time and kindness to grieve, collect myself and treat me like a human being. Today was the first day in a long while that I have felt at home in my apothecary. Tending to my oils, pouring offerings and carefully wrapping your orders while I speak my usual incantations like I am known to do. I am even finishing up THREE wholesale orders that I am over the moon about that Selene herself would be proud of. But, when things go awry, as a trusted practitioner and Witch to you, I will always put the offerings down when my energy and spirit are shifted in a way that do not serve you. Hello my darlings and witches! I’m riding high on the love energy from these amazing Beltane vibes! Are y’all feeling it or is my world just aligning this week? This is one of my vibe-iest, loveliest Beltanes ever. Today I’m sharing a new treat I stumbled upon last year for our Beltane days: Nankhatai, a traditional Indian shortbread cookie or biscuit! The word “Nankhatai” is from the Persian word “Naan” which means “Bread” and “Khatai” which means “Biscuit”. I chose to make Nankhatai for Beltane because it is traditionally made with Rose and Cardamom, two of our favorite Beltane plants! Rose amplifies our love vibes as Cardamom enhances our desires. Nankhatai, like a Scottish shortbread, is eggless and doesn’t require baking powder or baking soda. It holds up well and is loved by all ages as a quick snack or with cuppa, especially chai. There are many variations, like using chickpea flour or rice flour for a crispier outer layer, or ghee as the fat and Rose water as the liquid. I kept it simple here so we could all ease into this new treat, which is so delicious that I’m not sure how I won’t eat the whole plate today! I am so excited to throw my very first market alongside the rest of the @nightshadecovenmarket @astral.eye @heathenmoon.ca @thewaningmoonwitch To have our first in-person market in London, where I live, is beyond exciting. I have always wanted to throw a market with a huge focus on community and connection. And for years I had fantasized on how that would manifest. As a maker who has done so many markets over the last nine years I knew one thing was for certain: air conditioning... payment fee options oh and feed your vendors lol. We are STILL taking vendor applications as we realize the financial stress that the first of the month has on many makers and so we were asked if we could extend it and we are delighted to. I want to do what I wish many markets would do. Support makers in shining a spotlight and sharing space while bringing us all together. Like a true Witchy community. Bringing a diverse crowd into one place to have an amazing time and walk away feeling full and loved. And we have decided to extend the applications until May 19th! This year I feel like a shadow watching events unfold in front of me. One of the biggest themes has been grief and healing. Late last week, I lost one of my aunts suddenly and the ripple that went through everyone in the family as a whole was heavy and raw. You go through a state of fog and flashing images but the sense of it cannot be found. And then you witness the grief of others and it compounds further. Nothing can truly articulate individual loss of that magnitude and when you see it flow from those around you, you cannot properly process it. It is singular and weighted. I am in shock, rocked by it, humbled by it and holding my son a little tighter this week. I flow through it all with a hope that I approach it with a delicate hand but at the end of that day, grief is a riddle and I am not the one to solve it. None of us are. And that's why it hurts so damn much. All we can do is remain steadfast in loving and understanding one another even when it is frustrating. I have gone to my altar several times through this but truly I don't feel like tying my practice into this because that comes off as selfish and disingenuous. For anyone who is suffering with loss and grief, especially with Mother's Day quickly approaching, be gentle to yourself, with yourself and don't push yourself to celebrate if you can't. I have never lost a mother, but the insurmountable pain I have watched over these past few months with my family lets me know how crushing it is.

Bannocks! This traditional, quick flat bread has been made for generations in many parts of the world. Bannach (meaning “cake” in Gaelic) was made primarily with oats, which was an important ingredient to Scots and very important at Beltane. It’s very similar to a scone in this more modern way of cooking it, with baking powder and in an oven. But back in the day, it was primarily oats and water cooked over a fire with either a griddle pan or on a large flat sandstone. Bannocks were sturdy and affordable. You’ll often read about them in stories of adventure, since they travelled so well. They are usually baked in circles, and then (for Beltane) cut into triangles called knobs. The next morning, after the big opening bonefire that kicks off the holiday on the night of April 30th, they would make bannocks and mark the back of one of the pieces with ash from the bonfire. The person to unknowingly choose it, would then have to act out a fire sacrifice or rescue kind of scenario that was done in a playful way (which most likely got its origin in real sacrifice for the harvest a long time ago). I shared this recipe with your orders. It is from the Outlander cookbook (swoon) and is what Clan MacKenzie would have had at Castle Leoch (I’m a Jaime and Claire super fan). Bannocks are now typically served warm with butter and jam or other breakfast items. For an authentic 18th Century bannock, try Jocasta’s “Auld Country” Scottish Bannock. My Bannocks were cut with my moon athame and served with Monie’s Apple Butter that I made at Samhain. I love honoring these mirrored holidays together, and my Monie loved scones. I used the Wood Fae Sugar Dust, with Sweet Woodruff and Rose, as the sweetener inside and dusted on top of the bread. I was out of plain yogurt, so I used a Strawberry (also honored at Beltane) yogurt, and I may do it like that from now on! Also, I’m accepting bonus points for using Oat Milk in my black tea. I am a true believer that you make whatever space you live in, your home. Every home I have lived in as an adult, I have made sure to dive in and create the most me out of a space. My home is my sanctuary and my refuge. It is where I feel safest, most loved and most held. Normalize distancing yourself from people who support the people who betrayed you. This is an interesting one because we often weigh betrayal. But at the end of the day, to use the word, it is often quite large and personal and yet we try to dumb it down to be easier to digest when we feel the hurt by a friend who continues to support those who have directly hurt you. Because as we get older, let's face it, we don't play both sides when it comes to people. It's fair-weather and dilutes our connections. And we don't want to mess with people who play both sides when it comes to us because that just straight up hurts and people are diluting our experience and our pain. The more you observe this, the less you will want to associate. And that is a wonderful sign of growth. Always remember, if it feels wrong or not quite right, don't ignore your intuition.

Here we find our grounding, our purpose and our right to claim ourselves under her watchful gaze. And on the other, we have the torch of pitch offering liminal light, a key to the unseen and an unfolding to the road ahead with a tapped in eye. Chthonic energy and presence isn’t just the Underworld but a road map that is underutilized. It branches off into where we are now and how we want to proceed. You can see much clearer in the darkness because we are accustomed to bright light in this realm. When we sleep, it is an ethereal escape from the mundane into the truth, our lids close to present an array of truth hidden behind curtains of skin. Hekate does not hold ones hand but does offer support, loyalty and companionship who are truly disciplined enough to receive her. The Red Torch is dressed with Hekate Witch Oil and the wax infused with sacred herbs including Lavender, Mugwort, Dittany of Crete and Bay Laurel and Yarrow. In an age where our lives are increasingly intertwined with the digital realm, it’s easy to lose sight of the essence of our practices as witches/practitioners. Social media has become a double-edged sword, offering a platform for connection and expression while simultaneously trapping us in a cycle of validation-seeking that detracts from the true depth of our craft. As witches/practitioners, we are heirs to ancient traditions, guardians of wisdom passed down through generations. Our path is one of introspection, connection to nature, and communion with unseen forces. Yet, in our quest for validation, we have allowed the flickering screens to eclipse the luminosity of our inner selves and thus, what truly matters. Scrolling through Instagram feeds or TikTok videos, we witness a proliferation of spell tutorials, aesthetic altars, and beautifully curated rituals. While these glimpses into the witchy world can be inspiring, they often serve as a facade, masking the deeper work that lies beneath - armchair Witchcraft. We find ourselves seeking validation in the form of likes, comments, and followers, measuring our worth by the algorithm's arbitrary standards. But what about the validation that comes from within? The sense of empowerment that arises from mastering a new spell, communing with nature, or tapping into our intuition? This intrinsic validation is the lifeblood of our practice, yet it is all too easily overshadowed by the external validation sought on social media. There is so much that I could say about @thewaningmoonwitch From how kind, patient, empathetic and understanding she is to how fiercely protective and strong she is as well. We're both Aries but so different that we compliment one another quite nicely. She is much calmer than I am and mostly just laughs at my jokes and says oh my God to half the things that I say. She is the best friend that anybody could ask for, the sister I never had and an aura that can change and shift your whole mood. When I was younger I used to visit different planes. Some up above, some down below and some mirroring mine. We all did because when we were younger, it was easier to manifest these spaces. Our dreams were magical worlds full of ancestors and visions from the past, present and future. The one on this level I used to visit was only attainable through the woods.
