They inhabit the walls where their real-life counterparts would once have hung. The objects are a portrait of the metropolis and its people, as well as the space they occupy. Their form, as well as their materials, speak of the city and the home, of a life lived - a loophole to another dimension. (Piet Mondrian was a notable touchstone.) However, unlike Stella, the Belgian artist also revelled in the play of illusion and appearance, the babble of linguistic difference and the construction of abstruse systems. Few artists took more to heart the Socratic injunction against the unexamined life. We’re looking back at more photos from our @dmu_global trip to Brussels & Antwerp! 🇧🇪🏙️📸 On the last day of the trip, our students had a guided tour around Wiels, the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Brussels. A true gem: limited edition, numbered and signed by the author, made for @brusselslof “362.880 x Jef Geys - A multiple” is a unique novel written by one of the foremost Belgian (Flemish) authors about one of the foremost Belgian (Flemish) conceptual artists. In the 9 chapters of this book, Walter van den Broeck intended to paint a portrait of Jef Geys (1934-2018) showing the artist through the eyes of his family, colleagues, friends and enemies. The initial intention was to publish the nine chapters separately, so they could be read in 362.880 different orders, but in both Dutch editions, (1970 and 1985) the publisher opted for publication as a single novel. In 2012 an English translation by Stefan van den Broeck was published as a Kindle e-book. It is this translation which now appears in print and in form of a boxset with the originally intended nine separate booklets. The first 100 copies of this edition have been numbered and signed by the author.
