It's surreal that just three weeks ago, I was on set directing my short film, 'What Are You Supposed To Do With Your Hands?' as part of @crazy8sfilms 2024. We shot, edited, and finished it in just 8 days. And its fitting that it screens for the first time later this month, during #autismawarenessmonth Autism Spectrum Disorder is poorly understood, even by medical professionals, and it's even less understood in autistic women and girls. I wanted to create a story that highlighted the internal experience of a late diagnosed autistic woman, a story that reflected my own journey with autism acceptance. Both to educate allistic (non-autistic) as to how disabling the world can be for us, but also to educate and give validation for the woman who don't yet know they're autistic. I wanted to make a film that would have helped me understand and accept myself sooner. I was constantly told how exhausting, and draining, and well... crazy this film race would be, and it was. But it was simultaneously invigorating, inspiring, and surprisingly simple. That could be because of the fact that I knew what I was getting into, have spent years learning about filmmaking and directing from my work as an actor, script supervisor, and production assistant, and planned my script for the scope of the competition. But it's probably mostly because I was incredibly fortunate in so many ways - the opportunity to take time off of paid contracts to focus on this project full time, the incredible team members and craftspeople who dedicated their expertise, and just plain luck. This was my first time directing, and I can promise it won't be my last. And I'm definitely working with puppets again! It's fitting that my first day directing a full budget short film that I wrote was on International Women's Day. And it's especially fitting that it's a story about the experience of a late-diagnosed autistic woman, a perspective that is rarely represented in film, and even more rarely told by one. We are not plot obstacles for neurotypical heroes to deal with on their journey to self-actualization. We do not need to hide who we are or 'fix' ourselves to become more 'normal'. We are full people with complex and varied stories to tell, and the more we do, the more understanding and accepting of diversity everyone becomes. I am so grateful to @crazy8sfilms for giving me the chance to tell this story, and I'm so proud of myself for not self-rejecting, despite my fears.
