It was now time for him to take his ambitions to new heights: to go imperial instead of just another warlord in a fractured Empire. In 1208, this happened. Laskaris was properly crowned as Emperor and Autocrat of the Romans by a Patriarch of Constantinople he elevated in Nicaea, a learned man named Michael Autoreianos. From now on, the Patriarchs of Constantinople officially resided in exile in Nicaea until the reconquest. Now Nicaea had its legitimacy and more in conflict with the Empire of Trebizond, whose rulers claimed to be Emperors of the Romans way before Laskaris, although it seems most people preferred to see Nicaea as the legitimate continuation of the Roman state rather than Trebizond. I guess he was preparing the solution to his massive failure of a reign... anyway it was due to this relationship that Laskaris, relatively unknown before the 13th century, got to claim some legitimacy to rule over Nicaea. Then gradually he made his state the largest Roman holdout in western Anatolia, stamping out local magnates and facing off with David, the Trapezuntine conquerer, until it was clear that Nicaea was the dominant Roman power of Asia. Contrary to the Megaloi Komnenoi, Laskaris did not found an Empire right away, but only assumed the title of Emperor in 1208 after a string of successes, and crowned by a Patriarch of Constantinople he picked, doing all the proper ceremonies to get the most legitimacy. Laskaris would also end the Sultanate of Rum as a dangerous threat to the Roman world (and Alexios III as well, a health hazard to the Roman nation) at the Battle of Antioch of the Maeander, as besides some more attacks on Trebizond, Rmans and Turks co-existed mostly peacefully until the Ottomans became a thing. The groundwork for retaking Constantinople was laid down by Laskaris' son-in-law Ioannes III Doukas Vatatzes, Nicaea's greatest Emperor, but Nicaea's groundwork was laid down by him. Ioannes Doukas reconquers western Anatolia during the First Crusade Watch the video: https://youtu.be/6q6xRXFppsA It's important to remember that the Crusaders were pretty much acting as Alexios wanted before the Siege of Antioch. They defeated Kilij Arslan again at Dorylaion, and the route through the Anatolian plateau was open. As the Latins passed through and engaged the Turks, Ioannes Doukas was named the commander in chief of the whole Roman army and he reconquered western Anatolia from 1097-1098. First he retook Smyrna from Tzachas' son, then other important cities like Ephesos also fell to the imperial troops. By the time the Crusaders besieged Antioch for almost a year, when they were suffering from lack of supplies and wondering when Alexios would come help them, Doukas finally restored Roman control from southern Phyrgia to Attaleia, making it safe for the basileus to aid the Latins. Doukas was truly one of the unsung heroes of the Komnenian Restoration as he took on the difficult task of spearheading the first major reconquests in Asia.
