Out of my comfort zone here, but we’re taking part in the fab #myshoplife24 campaign and here we are (I am) on Day 1 My Shop! I live in this building with my husband, 4 children and 2 dogs - we bought this amazing Tudor house in Battle just over 5 years ago because it was already a part-commercial property and I could fulfil my shopkeeper dreams … I LOVE shopping, have always had quite a clear idea of what I like and had felt for years that I’d love to put the two together … DickieBird Homestore opened in September 2019 and now I can shop for the shop, which is perfect! My background is really in running restaurants and cafes so I was keen to have an element of that here too … so we are also a tiny (but fabulous) cafe - you can sit and drink coffee, chat, meet a friend (or a stranger) in amongst the shop goodies … this helps make the shop feel like a real community hub which I also LOVE @pencilmeinshop

A local businessman and resident of Battle, and all round good egg, Leigh Bennett, is participating in the Malawi School Build event organised by The Tongole Foundation. In May, he will be heading to Nkhotakota in Malawi for 14 days to help strip back and rebuild one of the local primary school classrooms. Their goal is to create water-tight, clean facilities for primary school children. This project is very close to his heart and believes that every child deserves a safe and conducive learning environment. Unfortunately, many schools in Nkhotakota lack proper infrastructure, making it difficult for children to focus on their education.
