Here’s a funny incident that will give the young generation an idea of the great umpire. The phone rang at Dickie Bird’s house on a terrible chilly day. The caller identified himself as the Master of Household from Buckingham Palace. He said that the Queen of England had commanded him to see whether Dickie Bird was available for lunch. Though Dickie Bird wasn’t fully convinced that the call was genuine, he didn’t want to miss lunch with the Queen of England, so he accepted the invitation. He was supposed to arrive at 1pm, but he arrived at the Buckingham Palace gates at 8am, five hours early. The guards informed him that he was too early and would have to wait until the Change of Guard. With plenty of time on his hands, Dickie Bird spent 4 hours in a local coffee shop before entering the palace at 1pm. The Queen came on time, and to Dickie Bird’s astonishment, there was no other guest for lunch with the Queen. They had a lovely conversation that began over lunch and lasted until late afternoon.
