TUESDAY! So I didn't quite make it to the end of #MyShoplife24 ...🤦♀️🤣 No surprise there, but I'm amazed I got as far as I did, only missing the final day. I had a much needed relaxing weekend and headed over to Findhorn first for a wee wander round the @phoenixshop.findhorn, lots of interesting items always to be found there. While there I spotted a couple of familiar faces - Lynn & Sandra of @lynbreck_croft I've followed their socials for a long time and you might recognise them from This Farming Life a few years ago. I was a bit starstruck to be honest and babbled rubbish 😆 - even asking if they'd driven over - yeah like they're going to cycle 30 miles just to get the shopping...🤦♀️🤣. They're an inspirational pair, practising regenerative farming on their croft just outside Grantown. They have an obvious passion for nature, do look them up on IG & FB and follow their journey. Next we headed up to Logie Timber as we want a kitchen table. Rob treated us to a tour of the mill so we could choose the wood we'd like to use. All the wood is locally and sustainably sourced and of high quality. The mill is a work of art in itself, traditionally constructed from 100% Scottish timber, no steel, therefore significantly reducing the carbon footprint. They follow a full circle business model and solar panels provide the power. On the way home we popped in past Chris at Bakes You Knead. You'll find him inside the Horizon building on the business park just east of Forres. We came away with a selection of goodies but his butteries are amazing! 👌 Also, it's taken me all day to write this, sorry! Open tomorrow 10-4.

Following this year's #myshoplife24, there are a few new folk residing in my little corner of Instagram, so I thought I'd do one of those introduction post things. 👋🏼 • Hi. My name is Charlotte, I'm 41 and I've worked in the gift industry for the past 20 years. After falling in love with retail as a Saturday girl, I opened my own store in Clitheroe in 2009. A far cry from the world of television research, which had been my passion up until that point - hence the masters degree in Television Studies that I proudly own! 📺 • Later this year I am getting married, to a rather spectacular person who has been in my life one way or another since I was 23. Together we are raising a hormonal 10 year old and two cats - one of whom thinks she could beat a German Shepherd in a fight. 🐱 • I love my job, my store and my customers but, in terms of business, the last 12 months have been the most difficult by far. 😔 Historically I hate websites. I never really wanted one, I even survived Covid very comfortably without one, but last year I started to build one. It allows me to feel proactive when things are slow in the shop and, following a meeting last week with one of those aforementioned lovely customers, I am feeling pretty ecommerce energised, so expect more from me on that front. 🌐🛍 • Lastly, I very much enjoy meeting and interacting with folk on this little app. Always feel free to ask me any questions about products, shop life in general or just which wine I drink. (The answer to that is, "any wine") One of my favourite parts of the job is getting to know my customers in the shop. Instagram is simply an extension of that. ❤️

*The Friday 26th April edition* a few days late haha #myshoplife24 #adayinthelife - My day starts with getting the little ready for nursery the best way of describing this is attempting to put tights on wet legs.😂 - I spent about an hour of working from home including market prep scheduling posts and making a note of what needs to be done in the shop - it was a busier day then I planned for something I am so grateful for as April has been sloooooow! I also had lots of real reassuring chats about pregnancy and birthing with customers which was so lovely.🥰 Gosh I love the community. - Had a wonderful stock delivery from our fav @bearcubs of stickers caps and forever calendars along with the cutest keyring EVER!! - Then after a shop tidy sweep I closed the shop and set off around 5.20 to collect the little from nursery. Where we discovered the biggest mushroom ever on the nursery grounds then set off home. Praying my partner had made a dinner plan haha. Spoiler alert he had!

Day 8 of #MYSHOPLIFE24 and it’s the final day with the category: SHELFIE. (Absolutely love that name!) Here’s a selection of shelves, but the first pic is kinda special to us because earrings are kinda where it all started for us. Granted a lot of our sewing was the start too but earrings became the seller of Etsy to start with. So it only felt right to let that shelf be the first, although when I had taken this photo I was shocked because I hadn’t realised how much had sold! So it’s a little empty, but it’s here nevertheless. Have a browse at some of the other shelves, each one we love. The colour, the quirk, the uniqueness, the goodness. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed taking part in My Shop Life and having 8 days to showcase little aspects of what we do at Sissy & One. It’s also been fab to connect with other businesses from all over, and to see their fab shops and how they’ve built them up. Day 8: Shelfie #myshoplife @pencilmeinshop Not only do we sell my paintings and merchandise from our beautiful gallery here in Cullercoats but we also supply cards to wholesalers and independent retailers. Take a look at our shelfies! My cards are packaged in plant based transparent sleeves before going onto the spinners in the gallery or out to retailers and wholesalers. When sending out orders from our website or from Etsy, we will fold the cards seen here on the shelf and send them with their matching envelope in a cardboard pocket, thereby avoiding needless extra packaging. And so we come to the final day of the #myshoplife24 Instagram challenge entitled “shelfie”. We’ve not got many shelves so I have chosen a picture of one of our walls instead. I know it’s a bit out of season but it’s a wall I’m proud of! I order a large variety of Advent Calendars (no chocolate ones!). The stationery is moved upstairs in September and the advent calendars take their place. It’s a bit of a mathematical excercise hanging them in such a way that not a scrap of wall space is unused! For somebody who is generally disorganised and chaotic I am surprised at how much delight I get from these neat, orderly straight lines! So what’s the plan for the future? I’m not sure there is one (see note above about being disorganised and chaotic!) I shall continue to order lovely products that I hope will delight you; continue ordering cards that make you laugh (cry with laughter sometimes), cards that a customer a couple of weeks ago described as ‘deliciously inappropriate’ (I know I’ve chosen well when I hear descriptions like that!). My hope is that you continue to come in, tell us your news and obviously buy loads of stuff! If you have not visited yet, I hope you now feel inspired to come and have a look when you are in the area. Special thanks have to go to two people. Firstly Paula who has held things together while I stamp around growling about how difficult I find communicating by Instagram! Secondly Sarah of @pencilmeinshop. Sarah if you see this I can not tell you how much I appreciate the work you have put into organising this challenge. It’s been great seeing what other retailers are doing. Funny story: the #myshoplife24 challenge is run by lovely Sarah at @pencilmein in Elgin & includes a useful planner to help us busy shopkeepers plan posts around each prompt. The prompt on the planner for the final day today was “selfie”. A brilliant opportunity to get the staff team involved I thought. They were all delighted (not…🤣) but cracked on. But then Sarah clarified that there was a wee typo on the planner and what actually said “selfie” should have said “shelfie”. 😳😂 #awkward However, whilst the things on the shop shelves are important to me and my shop life, they are nowhere near as critical as my wonderful team. These four incredible women scoop, brew and chat (some more than others…👀) and really do make the beach shop experience what it is. Really I just buy stuff, pay bills & faff around with shelves, these are the real heroes of my shop life so it’s a perfect way to round off the challenge by sharing their brilliant selfies, they really did rise to the challenge as ever! Jill’s work is very popular in the shop all year round. She provides me with cards, prints (& more recently cushions!) - all depicting her artwork of local scenes 😍 . The next #myshoplife24 prompt is WINDOW DISPLAY. 🪟🪟🪟 I like thinking of different themes or colour schemes to create new displays. I think some of my best window displays have never lasted very long because a customer then sees and buys the main picture from it! 😆 If you go doon ey street in Thurso today, here's one of the windows you will see! 🪟🪟🪟 I've kept it quite simple in this display. The main pieces are inspired by times spent at the coastline at Dunnet ; "Mermaid of Peedie Sands" and "Galloping, Dunnet Beach". The beautiful floor lamp reminds me of seaglass. Sunny days on the beach are glorious, but living in Caithness, you are just as familiar with the stormy ones. When the dramatic weather sweeps in, the wind whips you in the face, and the rain stings on your skin... that's when you can feel the most alive. 🌧️🐴🧜♀️🌊 Thanks to @pencilmeinshop for creating the shoplife challenge!

My Shop Life Instagram Final Challenge #shelfies plural for me… lots of sunny shelves on our first floor. To think this used to be our Gallery Room in Circa 21’s first 5 years! When I couldn’t afford to buy stock and when there were no shelves to be seen in this space. But those early years hiring out that room for local artists was the best decision. They struggle (always) for affordable, dry, beautiful rooms to display and sell their work to the public. Some of those artists, whether fresh from finishing their degrees or recently new/ish to West Penwith like @_sarahwoods @elizabeth.loveday.art @ali_bassett.studio or group shows with @lizzieblackartist and @zoe_kovacs and @harding_sophie and solo bursts of colour from @virginieiraistumbisha @theresa_shaw_artist and big deepness from @sophiedennettart76 have gone on to big and beautiful established galleries and collaborations. Love you all. There were oodles of awesome painters, illustrators and sculptors over that time who’ve gone on to carve a beautiful professional career in the arts. It is not an easy path and I was glad to be there to support in a small way and get to know them and share their journey. Importantly this network introduced so many customers who shop at Circa 21 today and who I love having a good ole chinwag with next to the shelves. 💙🙏💚 And now my shop life is very different. The Gallery Room has turned into The Colourful Room thanks in part to Havos and Gwavos seasonal exhibitions by @humblecottagedesigns Keri Valentine (gosh how I miss her still) organising @juliacrimmen @alisonbickdesigns and @thenatureofpaper - which led me to start my own creative shopkeeper thing in this room, as I ploughed my profit in to buying wholesale collections.
