Abelmoschus moschatus subsp./Native Rosella Abelmoschus moschatus is a perennial species comprising two recognised subspecies. Subsp. moschatus occurs in India, parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. There are also naturalised occurrences of subsp. moschatus in northern New South Wales. Subsp. tuberosus is found in northern Australia and in islands to the north. It is a delightful, soft, herbaceous trailing plant to 2 metres in diameter with soft hairy stems. Tuberous Grass Pink (Calopogon tuberosus) The Tuberous Grass Pink has the broadest range of any species in its genus: it is found across much of eastern Canada, the United States, and the northern Caribbean. It produces a grass-like leaf and up to 25 magenta, pink, or white flowers with a golden crest on the lip. The flowers appear to be upside down with the lip at the top of the flower and use deception to attract pollinators. Midway up the lip, a tuft of orange-yellow hairs resembles pollen which attract naive, recently emerged bees expecting a reward. Bees of sufficient weight, force the hinged labellum to swing down, dropping the pollinator backwards onto the column. The Jerusalem artichoke, aka edible sunchoke, is a species of sunflower native to North America. I was introduced to it in 2021 when a friend brought me some palm-sized tubers to plant. So I planted them. 😃 Two days later, the squirrels harvested them all. 😞 The end. Then last summer I planted four more that grew without any interference and bloomed sunny yellow flowers in September. Thinking that the four plants wouldn’t yield much in the way of root vegetable, I left the plants in place over the winter. Until this weekend when the squirrels started digging them up again. Not wanting to risk missing another harvest, I went out to my garden and was amazed at how many massive tubers had grown underground in the small area. This photo shows you the largest one! As you can see, it’s the size of my face! I boiled some in water (with a little lemon to reduce the inulin which reduces how much gas your intestines produce) then fried them as smashed sunchokes with garlic, parsley and butter. The rest I sliced and air fried into thick chips with salt, pepper, a little oil and paprika. They look like potatoes and they really do taste like artichokes. Just more crisp! Delicious! Since i have Calopogon tuberosus - an orchid for bogs - it happens unfortunately that the container where it grows does not get enough water. So the orchid withers and appears to be dead. In questi giorni è fiorito in giardino in maniera del tutto inaspettata l'Iris tuberosa, noto anche come Hermodactylus tuberosus. Si tratta di un Iris di taglia piccola, ma dalla fioritura estremamente particolare e interessante, ricca di sfumature. Impollinato solitamente da Apoidei selvatici, in primis bombi. . Usualmente fiorisce sul finire dell'inverno per poi andare a riposo in estate, perdendo tutte le foglie. Un accorgimento per superare le torride e aride estati mediterranee. Distribuito soprattutto in Francia, Grecia, Italia. . In coltivazione i piccoli tuberi devono essere interrati al almeno 10 o 15 cm di profondità, in un substrato relativamente sciolto e ricco di inerti. I ristagni infatti non sono mai particolarmente amati. Non è necessario irrigare o fertilizzare, basta aggiungere poca sostanza organica sulla superficie del terreno. Indispensabile una esposizione in pieno sole. Dieses Pracht Exemplar hab ich bei einem Apotheker entdeckt. Eine wahre Wunderwaffe der Natur, einst als Lebensretter französischer Auswanderer die die Knolle 1610 nach Paris schickten und ihre Popularität immer mehr zu nahm. Der Geschmack der Topinamburknollen ist süßlich, die Konsistenz wässrig und sie erinnert an Artischockenböden, Süßkartoffel und Yacon. Die Knolle kann sowohl roh in Salaten als auch in Salzwasser gekocht verzehrt werden. Auch frittiert wie Kartoffeln sind sie zum Essen geeignet. Die Knollen sind bei Diabetikern beliebt, da sie zu 16 % aus Kohlenhydraten in Form des Mehrfachzucker Inulin bestehen. Die Knolle enthält Betain, Cholin und Saponi, die als hemmend gegen Krebs angesehen werden. Des Weiteren beinhaltet Topinambur sogenannte Polyphenole, die eine starke antioxidative Wirkung haben. Sie schützen die Pflanze vor Fraßfeinden sowie schädlichen Umwelteinflüssen. Im menschlichen Körper wirken sie ähnlich, weswegen sie sehr wertvoll für die Gesundheit sind. Topinambur wurde schon Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts für das Brennen von Destillaten verwendet. Futterpflanze für Pferde, Hunde und Kleintiere für Schafe und Schweine soll sie ein sehr gutes Futter sein.Topinambur wird auch als Wildacke in der Jagd und als Wildfutter angebaut. Hasen, Rot- und Schwarzwild scharren die Knollen aus dem Boden,die Stängel bieten eine gute Deckung für Vögel und Kleintiere. Vom Wild werden vor allem die Jungtriebe zur Äsung angenommen.
