🪐 Presenting MoTA’s Impermanent #artcollection ‘Arte/Facts’: 💡 Les Liens Invisibles: Seppukoo (2009) The #memorialwall is devoted to more than 20,000 individuals who used the Seppukoo.com service in November 2009. The service enabled its users to commit a ‘social network suicide’ on #Facebook . If the user decided to commit suicide there, his profile was deactivated and a farewell note was sent out to all of his friends. Because Facebook doesn’t allow its users to delete their profiles permanently and conserves their data, it actually imposes eternal life on them. Upon committing suicide, each user was able to create his own memorial wall where his last words were published and which his friends could visit to grieve their loss. Instead of counting the number of friendships, #Seppukoo counted the number of friends influenced to do the same. The #service was named after the ritual suicide of samurai, with which they were able to preserve their honor instead of falling to disgrace by their enemies. Just like Facebook markets our desire to be somebody and to be connected, Seppukoo offered the opposite: an honorable death in social networks and separation from our virtual identities. Since December 2009, Seppukoo has been disabled by Facebook, but #LesLiensInvisibles continue to invite users to commit to its DIY version. Black & White Rubik Cube refers to Ernő Rubik’s cube, but also refers to #AlfredRubiks . Alfred Rubiks was a head of the Communist Party of #Latvia in 1991. 🪐 Presenting MoTA’s Impermanent #artcollection ‘Arte/Facts’: 💡 Andy Lomas: Aggregation, Flow (2005) The Aggregation series simulates emergence and growth of natural #organic shapes in a #computer environment controlled by an #algorithm . It started out with love for coding in the free time of its creator, the mathematician @andylomasart. Intrigued by an algorithm (aggregation with limited diffusion) used for the Matrix movie, where he was working, Lomas developed it so that it generates a simulation of growth with unpredictable results. It uses one ‘seed’ and one ‘walker’ circling around it and thus creates complex structures emerging from the invisible. The graphics consist of approximately 50 million particles and are not a result of a concluded process. 🪐 Presenting MoTA’s Impermanent #artcollection ‘Arte/Facts’: 💡 Ohira + Bonilha: Psychophone (2014) Developed between 1972 and 1974 by FranzSeidl , an #austrian electrical engineer, this device is intended to improve ITC (instrumental transcommunication) by using three different methods simultaneously: broadband receiver, self-sender #radio transceiver and a high impedance #microphone input. However, the #Psychophone by @ohirabonilha is foremost a device dedicated to the problem of scientific method and data interpretation. Because it can be used to communicate with other types of being (it was primarily intended as a scientific contribution to the research of the Electronic Voice Phenomena), which are not recognized by official science, it underlines the problem of scientific determinacy and its normative consequences. The Psychophone can be used as a nice synth or as a communication device, but it nevertheless asks us which axioms we choose to believe in and why. @lucianaohira and Sergio Bonilha graduated in Fine Arts at the Escola de Comunicações e Artes at the University of São Paulo. Since 2005, they have been working in a tandem. 🪐 Presenting MoTA’s Impermanent #artcollection ‘Arte/Facts’: 💡 Jorge Rodriguez Gerada: Expectation (2008) The giant face of #Obama is a trademark of hope, freedom and equality and simultaneously their fragility. The Expectation project megalomanised this image of hope through which people’s trust was marketed, but also cut through it. The weight of the project is large – more than 650 tons of sand and gravel distributed on the shore of Barcelona. The heavy weight of material used is a metaphor for the pre-election campaign which promised hope to the US and consequently to the whole world. Sand paintings were traditionally used by Native American #culture in healing rituals where art was a part of life and not separate from it. By using this technique, the symbolic, the natural and the political merge. Even though it is created as a cry for change, the sand mandala eludes the dispersal of hope with a simple wind blow. 👩🏽🎨 Jorge Rodriguez Gerada was born in Santa Clara, Cuba in 1966, but immigrated to the US with his family in 1970. He was a founding member of the group Artfux. After its rupture, Rodriguez-Gerada continued working with the Artfux splinter group Cicada Corps, where he in New York altered countless billboards, was part of numerous exhibitions and undertook guerrilla performances. I found out today that the ancient celtic festival of Mabon actually has its roots in the counter culture of the 1970s which, druidically speaking, is a little disappointing. Names aside though, we've been celebrating the Autumn Equinox from time immemorial, a symbolic day that blessed the harvest and the balance of light and dark, of day and night. So I harvested some stuff and used the idea of balance to make this little Mabon sculpture.
