A while ago, I had the honour of guest lecturing at UWC to 4th year Law students in Family Law. I started off the lecture by asking why they chose Family Law as an elective, some of the feedback was interesting and inspiring. The few that shared, mostly took the module without any real intention. I think that is true for many young adults, who are not entirely sure exactly what work they want to specialize in. One of these students shared that the module unbeknown to her at the beginning was going to shape her in a big way and wants to help families in one way or another. I said to them, I’m about to convince them to unlearn what they have spent the last three and half years learning (joking😂, maybe not🤭) and relearn that mediation focuses on interests and underpinning core issues of ALL parties. I further shared that mediation can restore relationships and not drive a further wedge between parties who are co-parenting; but rather can bring about deep understanding and offer a space for unique agreements that are tailor made to suit the family and circumstances, essentially empowering the parties through the process and their dignity remains intact in the midst of all the feelings and challenges that come with a divorce. I was talking about meditation as an alternative in family matters to traditional court proceedings. I am of the opinion that mediation should be a core module in Law studies, especially family law. It really would supplement their knowledge and ultimately be a useful tool when working with families. I must say, I loved the engagement from the class, there were many questions and laughs during the role plays. It felt like home, I remember sitting in that exact lecture halls 20 years ago! There is an atmosphere that UWC carries, it is one that is inviting, it is inclusive and it is ubuntu. Guys, my heart was full that I could pour into this beloved university. On April 20th, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office Cadet Program, led by Master Deputy Chris Barger, competed in the 2024 Scout Show Law Enforcement Exploring Competition hosted by the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office. Our cadets, along with nine other programs, competed in eight separate events throughout the day. Our team placed in seven of the eight events, bringing home 1st place in felony stop, bolo traffic stop, motor vehicle accident and civil intervention. They also placed 2nd in 'trouble unknown' and 'domestic violence' scenarios, and 3rd place in the 'suspicious person' scenario. These young men & women brought home 1st place overall, for all programs present. We cannot express how proud we are of our cadets, our team of mentors, and the parents that support these fine young men and women in pursuing their dreams. Nova had her first lesson today. One of the things i often hear at a first lesson is how much more a dog will start looking at and focusing on their owner once training starts. It was beyond cute to see young Nova looking at her owner.
