We have been playing a lot of #PaladinsoftheWestKingdom recently. Last week, we checked out the City of Crowns 👑 expansion. The new mechanics - Mustering and Negotiating - provide alternative ways to help players gain Faith/Strength/Influence and are a welcoming change to the game experience. This week, we tried to beat the co-op mode introduced in the Tome Saga expansion. Each player needs to score 70 points while keeping their honors up and fending off outsiders who want to take our VPs. We failed all 3 attempts but did get closer each time tho 😅 ... Two for one on this weeks #firstimpressionsfriday🎲 (started by @kay_plays_games ). Scooby Doo, Escape from the Haunted Mansion by OP Games. The West Kingdom Tomesaga by Garphill Games. We’ve enjoyed the Adventure Games series from Kosmos which are like escape room games but with more narrative but this is better because: 1, The character you use can influence the result. So each character has a different skill (e.g. Velma can research, Scooby can smell and Shaggy can eat!). You place the character next to the three digit code of the location you want to interact with and look up the entry in the relevant book. See pics 2 and 3 for example. 2, There are actual escape room type puzzles in the game which come in secret envelopes that you’re occasionally instructed to open. 3, It’s Scooby Doo!!! We’re only part way through this having ‘paused’ it after one session but am totally loving it. Pic 4 is a bit of a spoiler but it links todays two games where we used the meeples from Architects as markers for a Scooby Doo puzzle. We used the Tomesaga to play Architects cooperatively. This worked really well. You basically play as standard with some additional group objectives plus an action which allows you to transfer resources and cards between players. After all players have had a turn then the Overlord™️ has a turn. Generally they remove workers from spaces and put them in jail but they can also trigger an event or worst of all add a worker to the Guild Hall. Every time they add a worker to the Guildhall the score you collectively need to beat increases by 30. So the longer the game goes on the higher the score you need to beat. We lost our first game with 95 points when we needed 120 points. Partly because twice one of us had all the resources we needed to build only for the f@&$ing Overlord to steal our building cards! It is amazing how much is in this little box. Everything to play all three games cooperative plus a campaign to tie the three games together. We decided to start July off by finishing up our first Tome Saga experience. My wife won Architects and Viscounts. However, by crushing her in Paladins and steadily earning Tomes I walked away with the overall victory. I really enjoy how @garphillgames makes these saga expansions that let you experience each trilogy in a new way. No. 31 on my personal Top 50 Games of all time (down 6 spots from last year) is Architects of the West Kingdom. Like yesterday’s pick, this is another twist on worker placement. This time however, instead of community workers, we get a WHOLE LOT of workers that power each other up the more of them are in each space. This also introduces a mechanic that allows a player to remove all of another player’s workers in a single spot. This really makes it risky to concentrate on one space. I was close to buying a new game yesterday when I stopped and thought’ I’ve got enough and we’ve got loads that we need to play more of’ so my May pledge is not to buy any new games* So, on that thought and with it being a long weekend here in the UK I decided I really wanted to play the West Kingdom games and to play the Tomesaga to tie them all together. So last night was Architects. I’ve never played Tomesaga before but it brings a few additional objectives which if you’re first to complete you get a bonus that you carry into the next game! One of those objectives was the first to construct 4 buildings so in the initial draft I made sure I picked easy to construct buildings. I got my first three built quickly but could see I was in a race with @boardgamingwhovian to be first. I managed to find another cheap building and got that built first. Another objective was first to 14 virtue. So I made sure I completed this next. Having done two of the three objectives ( I didn’t want to do the third which was to get five debts). I didn’t really have a plan beyond this so decided to build on the Cathedral to try and accelerate the game end. I couldn’t quite get to the top and by now I was short on workers (since loads were tied up on the building spaces) and watched as @boardgamingwhovian and @luke_howarth_ kept building high scoring buildings. Finally @luke_howarth_ took the last building space to end the game. I was quite confident I’d won but upon scoring I came last! , probably in my race to construct cheap buildings. On the plus side I have two bonus cards for the next round plus three shields. Paladins tonight. * This doesn’t include any charity shop bargains or car boot sales finds or cheap Gumtree posts. No. 4 in my Top 50 Games (last year: No. 5) is Paladins of the West Kingdom. This, in my honest opinion, it s the greatest worker placement game on the market right now, and the crown jewel in the Shem Phillips collection. The idea is that workers are specialists, and that nobody owns them, but are tasked into service each round. Phillips examined this mechanic in Raiders of the North Sea, and perfected it in Paladins. The amount of balance that is required to do well in this game is astonishing. Unlike point salad games, it is very difficult to ignore any aspect of the game, or some part of your score will suffer. Continuing my dive into Garphill Games (and more realistically games with art from The Mico, after Merchants Cove, lol), I brought Viscounts back to the table to try out the Tomesaga co-op mode, as many people raved about it after I shared my experience with the co-op mode for Architects. I'm already a huge fan of the solo mode for Viscounts with the four different AI players and the really interesting use of deck building, but after reading through the co-op rules, I wasn't super excited to try it out, as I was a bit worried about the complexity of playing duel handed in this one and also the threat management of the Overlord (ala Pandemic) seemed like it would be more of hassle than anything. After having pushed myself to try it out anyway, I am very glad I did. Duel handed play actually meant that I could be even more focused with my play for each character and it allowed me to try out different strategies than I had before, and the extra level of threat management really added an interesting new focus on the game that allowed for more of the turn by turn tactical gameplay that I enjoy so much. Best of all, I managed to pull out a win with Caroline score 79 and Samson scoring 88 to cross over the required 160 point threshold! Decided to try out the Tomesaga co-op mode for Architects today, but as it has been a while, I did a regular solo game with Age of Artisans first. Was definitely rusty and lost the regular game on normal 46-56. Seems I pick things up quickly though, as I then took Clovis and Gisela for a spin in the co-op mode and finished with a score of 65, which was a win over the final goal score of 60! Architects has always been my least favorite of the bunch, but Artisans definitely improved things, and I'm enjoying it more with each play. Now having played the co-op, I enjoy it even more, as I love both the ability to use the asymmetric player boards and the goals of the co-op that help focus my strategy. To complete the Tomesaga campaign @matt_90s_seuss and I played a game of Viscounts of the West Kingdom last night! I suspected after our Paladins game that I was going to be able to sneak in and steal the victory, even after being behind the entire campaign, because I usually have good luck on Viscounts… I was right. I managed to score two face up tomes, a bonus tome for collecting four red shields as well as the three face down tomes for a major victory and I managed to win the overall campaign by one point! I actually enjoyed this addition to the West Kingdom. It doesn’t add much, you’re basically playing the West Kingdom games as they are and this adds a few goals you can work on. It was a nice touch though and I’m sure we’ll be playing it again in no time because we are West Kingdom junkies over here! I have been wanting to try The West Kingdom Tomesaga campaign for a while, basically since I figured out how much I actually love Paladins, and last night @matt_90s_seuss and I started! This is a short campaign, three games long. You play one game of each of The West Kingdom games, collecting tomes throughout by completing goals or winning games. At the end of the third game whoever has the most tomes wins the campaign. First up is Architects, I collected a couple tomes but since @matt_90s_seuss took the victory he is currently in the lead with 3 tomes to my 2. We’ll be back at it next Monday for the second game, Paladins! Last weekend we finally completed Tomesaga day! It took us 6 hours to complete (with a lunch break). This day has been a long time pending, but we felt accomplished after this trilogy. Architects - We often neglect this game in favour of the other two, but every time we are reminded of how fun this game is. The Artisans expansion means that Rosie usually wins, but James claimed a major victory this time. Paladins - Our favourite game as a couple! James still can't break 100 points on the base game, consistently scoring between 90 - 99. James always wins this one. Rosie is so excited for the City of Crowns expansion to arrive this month. Viscounts - fascinating game. Rosie claimed a few transcripts, focusing on buildings, and snuck a victory from a tiebreaker. Paladins of the West Kingdom by @garphillgames This is the heaviest of the West Kingdom trilogy, but is a remarkably good game. It does take thought though, so playing when you're tired or not totally in the zone can hurt your gameplay 🙄 There is a bit of engine building in the game, and if you can get a decent little engine going, you can get all sorts of.good rewards. Each round you start with a different Paladin and six workers plus up to three carried over from the previous round. Tomesaga game 2! We came into Paladins with a 3-3 tie on Tomes. I had 2 objective rewards (when passing, turn unused workers into purple workers with no suspicion penalty, and pay one coin less for Developing) and my husband had one (go up on one scoring track if you pass first). I Developed like a madwoman and grabbed the “Develop 5 times” objective, as well as the “reach 4 on all tracks” objective. My husband took the “hire 5 townsfolk” objective. I pulled off an 88-66 major victory. 😁 Our Tome count is now 8-4 going into Viscounts. I’ll need the advantage, because I have never won Viscounts. Super fun game of Viscounts of the West Kingdom last night to finish off a weekend of games! I love Viscounts and @rebecca_hookway81 had not played before so that's a good enough reason to play! We always enjoy this game, and it's the only game where Telina has not yet managed to beat me! I decided to focus almost exclusively on the castle and so did she! I managed to run enough interference that she didn't end up with anyone in the centre. I managed to win with a final total of 74. But win or lose, playing Viscounts is always fun! The entire West Kingdom trilogy is awesome and I'll happily play any of the three. Architects, Paladins or Viscounts. Garphill Games @garphillgames always reward you with a good experience! Worker placement is one of my favourite game mechanisms, and it's hard to find someone who does it better than @garphillgames 😃 Pictured is the game board for Architects of the West Kingdom with the Age of Artisans guildhall. Along with a full guildhall. In this game workers are placed in various locations to gain resources, coins, building cards and apprentices. You can also capture other players meeples and put them in jail 😜 but when you want to construct a building, work on the Cathedral or gain tools and adornments, you have a place workers onto the guild hall. Workers can't be retrieved once placed, and certain positions on the guildhall activate other in game changes. Placement of a meeple in the final spot triggers the last round of the game. 💥 Review 💥 From our favourite games collection: Explorers of the North Sea with Rocks of Ruin expansion. Explorers is a great tile placement, world building, resource collecting, outpost/building placement, pirate encounters, fortress and settlement raiding game! We love how quick the game is to setup compared to most, and how many ways there are to get victory points. Each player starts with 7 Vikings, a ship and 3 tiles. Place a tile, take 4 actions, draw a tile. 48 tiles, 48 turns. Actions are either move your ship or Viking, load or unload a Viking or resource, build a building with a wood resource, or build an outpost (2 actions), flip a shipwreck tile for either wood, gold, raiding strength or extra actions. Raiding settlements, fortresses or taking on a pirate are not actions as such and don't take up one of your actions. Each player has a unique ships captain with a special way to score extra VP at games end. It's probably no secret that Garphill Games is our favourite publisher and @garphillgames Shem Phillips, our favourite designer! Which North Sea game is your favourite? Have you played them all? Who has completed the Runesaga? For me, Raiders of the North Sea is my favourite of the trilogy, and probably my favourite of all the Garphill Games. I love what the expansions add, and the neoprene mat is beautiful. Telina's favourite is Explorers of the North Sea with the expansion. However we both enjoy playing all of them! We have done the Runesaga once and that was cool! Telina won the most games, but I managed to win the saga.. still not sure how! 😂 Overall we'd give the trilogy a solid 10/10. You should have it in your collection. If you had to buy one, we'd be split. I'd say Raiders and Telina will go Explorers. Either way you can't do wrong! Viscounts time! We're camping.. so naturally we introduced someone to a game they haven't played. Viscounts of the West Kingdom was our new friends choice. We had a fun game😃 Telina went with a building strategy and then got some scrolls and a few meeples in the castle. Kyle was picking things up quickly and went with a but of everything. I only places one building and went for a scrolls first, castle second strategy. Introduced friends of ours to Architects Of The West Kingdom, with Age of Artisans expansion last night. They loved it as you would always expect from an @garphillgames game! What's not to love?? Maybe Telina explained how to play too well, but Rebecca won her first play, with me in second. We both took the Cathedral route, while Leighton and Telina tried other Tactics. Such a beautiful game that I really like to play.. but I just can't seem to get good enough to have a good score, let alone win. 🤔 Two player game today and around 3 rounds from the end you know there is nothing you can do, not a thing, to even get close.
