Are you in the habit of sitting quietly with Jesus? Silence is rare in our society and can be uncomfortable. Choosing to be still is counter-cultural. But it is in the stillness—free from distraction—that we can hear God’s Spirit. We are hard-pressed to find stillness. Yet consider the power of communing with the God of the universe who holds all things together, our Savior who gave everything to have us, and the Spirit who provides comfort and guidance for our lives. We can intentionally remove ourselves from noise and set aside distractions as we practice sitting quietly and leaning into the presence and peace of God.

My #boyfriend insisted we stop at the @wildflower_cafe_tulsa for dessert, I’m so glad he did. You know sometimes God whispers “welcome home” to your heart in the most beautiful ways. We had to move the curtain back that was over the front door and I just assumed we’d chosen the wrong entrance. Nope. They were closed. They invited us in and I immediately felt like I was home. It had that feeling - you know the one? As if the mama I’d dreamed about my whole life had been waiting with anticipation, for me to walk through the front door. The place was full of sweet vintage finds, enough plants that it felt like a nursery from the 70’s and diner seating resembled something curated from a main street dinner from 45 years ago. These women were young and not bothered at all that it was well past closing time. There was no question, they held space for us. Their hospitality was unreasonable. Someone offered @kentshaff a piece of pie on the house, he excitedly asked for a slice of #keylimepie —I walked around taking photos and holding back tears. God is so sweet to let vision He’s currently knitting together in my heart for Grace and her community, come to life through vision He knit together years ago in the heart of another, a state away. It can be easy to feel overlooked and unheard in a society noisy with technology, media, and commerce. We can develop a skewed perception of significance. And yet God’s gaze never leaves us. He is intimately familiar with our lives. No one knows us better than He does, and no one loves us more fiercely. Matthew 10:30 says, “Even the hairs of your head are all numbered.” Nearly eight billion people live on earth, each with between 90,000 and 150,000 hairs on their heads. Yet God knows the exact number of hairs along with every thought in their minds and desire in their hearts. He has searched us and knows us—we are seen and heard.

On this day in 1838, William James Kirkpatrick was born in Dungannon, Ireland. His family immigrated to America when he was a baby and he went on to be a very successful and prolific hymn writer, after working as a carpenter for many years. Kirkpatrick wrote almost 2,000 hymns and several of them are still being sung today. We've had TWO Kirkpatrick hymns on Hymn Talk Twin Talk and we LOVE both of them. Where have you found your comfort now that you don’t have to (pretend to) get it all from Jesus? The running water of either a creek or a warm shower really help me through big feelings. Also hot tea and french fries and puppy cuddles and going into my closet with the lights off for a sensory cleanse. It’s also really nice that none of my comforts are jealous of each other. . God’s economy is exponential. He deals in abundance so that our lives might overflow with His love, peace, and power and pour out to those around us. This passage in 2 Corinthians continues in verse 10: “He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.” Picture a flower beginning its life as a tiny seed. Envision its mature flowerhead full of new seeds ready to fall to the soil and multiply in new life. Christ’s love in us is like those seeds. His provisions are not meant to remain only with us but to abound and overflow to the world around us.
Oh, how hard this is. We like to lay our worries and our burdens at Jesus’ feet and then run back and say “ JK, I’m just going to walk around with this a teeny tiny bit more.” Lay and leave it! Let Jesus loosen the shackles of worry, unburden you and carry that weight for you. Leave it in the hands of the one who cares even for the smallest sparrow. The one who created the universe and knows how many hairs you have on your head. Release and rest. 🫶🏻“Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? Some would argue that crawling on a roof to get to Jesus is far easier than continuing to live for Him. I would have to agree. Realizing that you need Him is one thing. However, continuing to do what He said is something altogether different. The same goes for mounting that big thing to get to what He promised you. That’s the easy part. Continuing to cultivate and strengthen that thing is another story. Don’t just climb on the roof to get the blessing only to lose it on the journey of not following through! The climb may be difficult. The continuation may be even harder. But it’s worth it!
