Jan Żabiński byl uznávaným zoologem, autorem populárních knih o zvířatech. Získal doktorát z fyziologie na Varšavské univerzitě a v roce 1929 se stal ředitelem varšavské zoologické zahrady. Ta se pod jeho vedením stala jednou z nejrozsáhlejších v Evropě. Druhá světová válka a s ní i nacistická okupace Polska však znamenaly pro zoo i jeho obyvatele katastrofu. Mnoho zvířat zahynulo při bombardování, další byla utracena nebo odvezena do Německa. Żabiński, ale i v tomto tíživém období nezapomněl na lidské utrpení. Když bylo zřízeno varšavské ghetto, Jan a jeho manželka Antonina, která mu v zoologické zahradě pomáhala, se rozhodli Židům v nouzi aktivně pomáhat. Jan, coby zaměstnanec magistrátu, měl povolení k vstupu do ghetta. Jan Żabiński začal v zoo chovat prasata, aby pod záminkou krmiva pro ně mohl do ghetta pronikat a pašovat dovnitř léky, potraviny a ven lidi. Během války se jim tak podařilo zachránit životy stovek Židů. Později jim s Antoninou začali ve své vile na území zoo a v dalších prostorách zahrady nabízet úkryt. Manželé Żabińští spolupracovali s organizací Żegota, která pomáhala Židům s útěkem a zajišťovala jim falešné identity. Jan se aktivně zapojil i do polského povstání ve Varšavě v roce 1944. Po jeho potlačení byl zajat a odvezen do Německa. Antonina i nadále pomáhala Židům, kteří přežili v troskách Varšavy. Naštěstí se nacistům nepodařilo odhalit Židy ukryté v zoo. Díky statečnosti Jana a Antoniny Żabińských tak přežily stovky lidí, kteří by jinak s největší pravděpodobností zahynuli v koncentračních táborech nebo během povstání v ghettu. Po válce se Jan Żabiński snažil zoologickou zahradu obnovit. Kvůli své odbojové činnosti však musel v roce 1951 z funkce ředitele odstoupit. V roce 1965 byli manželé Żabińští za své hrdinské činy během druhé světové války oceněni vyznamenáním Spravedlivý mezi národy. Příběh Jana a Antoniny Żabińských byl popsán v knize "The Zookeeper's Wife" americké autorky Diane Ackerman, která vycházela z deníku Antoniny Żabińské. Bonsoir à tous 🌝 Varsovie, 1939. Alors que la guerre éclate, Jan et Antonina, qui gèrent le zoo, sont contraints de s'adapter. Après la reddition de la Pologne et la mise en place plus stricte du ghetto juif, Jan va s'engager dans la résistance alors même que les nazis ont des caches dans le zoo. Sa femme accepte également d'héberger les juifs persécutés, et ce au milieu d'un nombre plus ou moins grand d'animaux exotiques ou domestiques, qui parfois, comme l'élevage de porcs, s'avère bien pratique pour continuer les allers et venues... C'est un beau roman, dense et passionnant, que livre Diane Ackerman. Je découvre tout un pan de l'histoire de la seconde guerre mondiale, de la résistance polonaise, et de l'impact sur Varsovie, ses habitants, et son zoo. En remettant les choses dans le contexte zoologique des années 30 et non le prisme actuel, on comprend l'attachement de ce couple aux animaux, dont certains élevés au biberon à la maison ou élevés tout court comme un membre de la famille (blaireau, rat musqué, lièvre arctique). Leur approche se heurte au directeur du zoo de Berlin, Lutz Heck, fervent nazi (et qui évidemment ne sera pas inquiété après guerre), qui viendra piller les spécimens les plus beaux, et les plus purs, dans le même esprit que la doctrine aryenne. L'auteure s'est basée sur sa rencontre avec leur fils Rys, les interviews de Jan, et les carnets d'Antonina pour en dresser un portrait le plus fidèle possible, dans un roman qui est parfois plus proche du récit historique ou biographique. Ayant caché et sauvé près de 300 personnes (de passage pour une nuit, voire des mois), ils ont reçu le titre honorifique de Justes parmi les nations. Leur engagement pour la communauté tant humaine qu'animale est sans borne, et leur esprit d'initiative ou leur prise de risque forcent le respect. Pour ma part, malgré quelques longueurs descriptives, j'y ai aussi vu un aspect crucial : un endroit de captivité va devenir un lieu d'hébergement secret, parfois très longtemps, pour des juifs qui échapperont ainsi à une captivité toute autre et qui, une fois les rondes des soldats terminées, pouvaient envisager quelques heures de liberté et de joie.
