Taking a break from kids books to share this mesmerizing book published on the occasion of the 2013 exhibition of Renée Stout: Tales of the Conjure Woman at the Halsey Museum of Contemporary Art in Charleston. . Ms. Stout invented healer Fatima Mayfield as a means of exploring the syncretic religious practices of Hoodoo/conjure. The found objects, paintings, prints, sculpture, blown glass, and etchings that formed Fatima's lair are displayed here in over 60 riveting full color plates. Enhanced by contributions from Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, Mark Sloan, Ade Ofunniyin, Fatima Mayfield, and Kevin Young. . Bound in black cloth with showtime red titling to spine and front board. Jacket front panel shows Marie Lavean; back panel shows Big Man. Will be available at link above this weekend. . . #reneestout #renéestout #talesoftheconjurewoman #conjurewoman #conjure #hoodoo #hoodoomagic #syncretism #womanartist #africanamericanartist #twoheadedwoman #artbooks #bookish #bookcollector #bookshop #booklover #bibliophile #igbooks #bookstagram #charlestonbooks #charlestonsc

Today's inspiration: Renée Stout's Tales of a Conjure Woman. I can smell the florida water and burning incense just by turning the pages of this book. Renée's work is filled with superstition and ancestral wisdom and allows us a glimpse inside the conjuring of root work, herbal medicine, and the practices of Hoodoo. The book has a wonderful forward by Andrea Barnwell Brownlee, Ph.D. and Director of Spelman College Museum of Fine Art and a thoughtful introduction by Mark Sloan. I. LOVE. THIS... ALL OF IT. #inspiration #alannaairitam #reneestout #talesoftheconjurewoman

Next week we conclude our Inspired By series with an intimate workshop led by November Nichols, @spelman_college C’1994 and owner of L’Artisan Muse @lartisanmuse, an Atlanta-based and women-centered wellness boutique. Moved by the ways conjuring appears in Renée Stout’s work, November Nichols will lead us in an interactive course on conjuring that which is within us. Using fragrance and journaling as our able guides, we will explore the essence of our being through our senses. Reserve your space today! #LinkInBio Image #2: Renée Stout, (Detail) “The Rootworker’s Table” (2011). Photo by John Betham.

The Museum's Inspired By series highlights Black women artists through diverse, intergenerational and collaborative events and performances. Today we are inspired by Renée Stout. Born in Kansas, based in Washington, D.C., and deeply connected to Pittsburgh and New Orleans, Renée Stout’s mixed-media artworks examine the impact of the African Diaspora “to bring up issues that people want to bury.” When we presented “Tales of the Conjure Woman” in 2014, we engaged in several thoughtful conversations with our communities about self-image, personal agency, and ancestral practices. Since then we’ve seen those interactions grow into published writings, fully realized artworks, and testimonials citing open doors to new ways of thinking and creating. One program we were not able to host due to inclement weather was inviting Ade Ofunniyin, former director of the Gullah Society, to the Museum to speak. Earlier this month he became an ancestor, and we echo these words he wrote about Renée Stout’s ability to deliberately imbue “her creations with objects, concoctions, and spirit-filled remembrances that are intended to inspire and influence deep impressions of the power of conjure and ancestral relations... [h]er work pushes toward a solid reclamation of the knowingness, power, and wisdom of Africa’s spiritual sciences, those unseen and intrinsic powers that reside in natural elements and inanimate objects… to locate her sacred space, where peace reigns supreme, and the ancestors are welcomed.” Next month we will feature two programs with artists, curators, writers, and entrepreneurs on the ways Renée Stout inspires them. Visit the links in our bio for more information about them.  Photo by Grace Roselli #InspiredBy #ReneeStout #crossroads #DrO #talesoftheconjurewoman
