I thought I would share some of the delicious meals I've made using produce from my lovely urban garden! The first photo shows my tomato, pepper, and soy sausage hash with delicious melted cheese on an english muffin with a fresh radish, cucumber, and dill salad on the side. The second photo depicts a yummy breakfast dish that has become a go-to meal for me. I make it by adding a fried egg, roasted peppers, and soy sausage to an english muffin, and topped with homemade pickled radish! In the third photo, you'll see a flatbread with feta, dill, swiss chard, and roasted garlic. The leeks are one of the late harvest veggies. They take a long time to mature and are tolerant of frost. For creating savory vegetarian and vegan dishes, they are an important ingredient in soups, stews, casseroles, and sautes. I want to share with you some highlights from my garden over this past month of June! First, I love the look of my purple top turnips this year. They make a great garnish for any dish in the summer. In the next photo, I share the progress of my rhubarb. They've gotten so big! I've also got lots of carrots in the garden of all sorts of colors. Here you'll see their leaves soaking up the bright summer sun. I also wanted to share a photo of my tomatillo, otherwise known as the Mexican husk tomato. They are related to a tomato, but a bit different in looks and taste. In the next photo, you'll see some hearty kiwi vine blossoms. The beautiful flowers appear on the vines in the early summer. I wanted to commemorate this spectacular vegetable in this artwork! This is got to be the largest tomato I've ever grown! That was the year I was growing indeterminate tomatoes and we trellised the tomatoes. They grew as tall as 9 feet! It's so impressive how much food can be grown in a relatively small space by applying square foot organic gardening practices and trellising the vegetables vertically. It was so spectacular that I featured it in this work. I am passionate about eating delicious food and living an environmentally sustainable lifestyle. One of the ways I reduce my carbon footprint is by eating a predominately plant-based diet and growing my own produce. My husband and I grow fruits and vegetables in containers and 4’ wide by 50’ raised beds at our small urban lot around our home. We grow much more food than we can consume at the time of harvest, so we preserve it with canning, freezing and drying and eat it through the fall and winter. * Growing our own food eliminates the carbon emissions associated with the transit of produce. The vegetables we grow are much more delicious than what can be purchased at the local grocer because we can allow the fruits and vegetables to ripen on the plants. We use non-toxic and organic growing methods. This form of agriculture is beneficial for the pollinator insects and soil enhancing organisms. Since there are no pesticides or waxes on the food, there is no need to peel vegetables, which increases the nutritional value of the food we eat. Often it is the lighting that inspires me. That was definitely the case when I noticed the sun beaming through this rainbow Swiss chard. I noted the bright red stems, and chose to wear this butterfly skirt with the bright red butterflies to compliment it when harvesting and photographing. Since the subject was backlit I needed to add a little light to my figure to avoid being a silhouette. I usually use one portable studio light in my Sustain series photographs. In this artwork, "Planting Purple Majesty in May", I plant an eggplant variety Purple Majesty in the late afternoon light. The light cast a diamond pattern shadow across the garden, which caught my eye and prompted me to photograph the planting of the Purple Majesty. I wear a vintage style dress in this artwork, refer to the victory garden movement of WWII when Americans grew 60% of the products that they ate in the backyard and community gardens. I noticed one afternoon how beautiful the late afternoon light highlighted the textures and linear patterns of the leeks long leaves waving in the wind. So, I created this "Leeks in Late September" artwork to celebrate the harvest. The leeks are one of the late harvest veggies. They take a long time to mature and are tolerant of frost. For creating savory vegetarian and vegan dishes, they are an important ingredient in soups, stews, casseroles, and sautes. Un ouvrage de récits et de recettes qui part d’une conviction : une alimentation durable se fonde sur l’attachement des habitants au territoire alimentaire. Flaming Meat: Meeting on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for Kay's performance installation at the Cité internationale des Arts. This performance creates a dialogue between the memory of the body towards an exploration of body-recyclers. During colonization, the consumption of the viscera of animals, considered as waste, today becomes "traditional" dishes, such as Soul food, a type of food considered as a fuel and a means of resistance. "Green" recycling - organic, biological and electronic waste (e-waste) - circulates at the intersection of bodies and their waste. This perspective opens the doors to eco-bodily relationships in a spillway where bodies, toxins and economic powers come together. Viande enflammée : Rendez-vous mercredi de 18H00 à 21H00 pour installation performance de Kay à la Cité internationale des Arts. Cette performance fait dialoguer la mémoire du corps vers une exploration des corps-recycleurs. Pendant la colonisation, la consommation des viscères d’animaux, considérés comme des déchets, devient aujourd'hui des plats "traditionnels", comme par exemple la Soul food, un type de nourriture considérée comme un carburant et un moyen de résistance. Le recyclage « vert » - les déchet organiques, biologiques et électroniques (e-waste) – circulent à l’intersection des corps et de leurs déchets.
