Su Legno Barrel Fermented Ales - Nero. Glynde, South Australia 🇦🇺 This is a classic South Australian style stout (think 'Extra Stout') fermented in charred American oak. Primo was one of the finest brews I tried last year, so very excited to have this in my possession. Pours a firm tan head with excellent retention. Aroma is simply incredible - malts, chocolate and coffee. Taste wise, for the record these notes are after I let it warm. Lovely malt driven roasted bitterness upfront with underlying notes of cacao. The coffee is prominent but not overpowering. Smooth, invisible ABV to the palate. Quite dry sipping. This is simply gorgeous, an elegant stout brewed with love and care which delivers on all fronts. This is the quintessential Modus classic, a Red IPA hopped with Mosaic and Galaxy, rebrewed for their 10th birthday. Pours a huge froth with good retention. Aroma of grapefruit, pine and loads of malts. Tatse wise, big malts and caramel upfront that give way to the influence of the hops, that bring grapefruit and pine back with some zesty notes on the tail. It's a big one and it tastes like it, a rich and heavy hop and malt bomb. The OG Aussie Red IPA that harkens back to the glory days of early Modus Operandi (I still like to call them that). Tell me: which brewery does your favourite tap decal, can art or bottle art? 🎨🤔 . I’m a sucker for good craft beer art, and there are so many that do it well. I like bright, colourful labels, and ones with great artwork. I’ve always been impressed with the designs from @workingtitlebrew.co, which are bright, colourful and all suitably unique to the individual beer at hand, but between the style and their logo always featured prominently, you always know it’s a WT beer. And I love @coconspiratorsbeer and each beer's persona 😁 I also like simplicity, though, and am also a fan of the clean look of @foxfridaybrewery's designs 😊 . Which brings us to the beer at hand. The beauty of this can art may be a bit esoteric for my non-Australian followers, but its inspiration will be instantly recognisable to most of my fellow Aussies 😆 . The Grouse Southern ‘Fishing IPA’, a collaboration between @hopnationbeer and @mountainculturebeerco is a play on Great Northern, the best-selling macro lager (and, ergo, best-selling beer) in Australia these days 😶 . So, what is a Fishing IPA? Well, the description from the breweries is as follows: “Grouse Southern is a world first 'Fishing IPA', a style imagined to be the perfect companion for fishing, or any activity that requires a beverage capable of ultimate refreshment and sessionability. A full flavoured, moderately hopped beer, comprising of low bitterness, a balanced residual sweetness, a light ~misty~ haze, alongside an approachable 5% ABV" 😋 . With that in mind, for me it accomplishes what it sets out to do. Unsurprisingly, the Grouse Southern is a bit more complex and flavoursome than its "big brother", the Great Northern. Pouring a cloudy and slightly muted golden colour, it gives juicy vibes with a subtle fruitiness, pineapple particularly. The beer is genuinely refreshing and brings some bitterness that builds over the course of a can. Quaffable and bright, it’d be a great (or maybe grouse 😉) tinnie to sink while sitting on a tinnie casting a rod! 🎣🍻

Tell me: where is your favourite beach? 🌊🤔 I love the beach, even though I don’t get along often enough these days. I’ve lived pretty close to the water for a lot of my life, and I think I’d probably say Shelly Beach where I spent a lot of time as a kid is my favourite. But they’re all great - love that fresh ocean smell and soothing feel of the water! We'll just put aside the hassle of getting sand out of your clothes 🙉😆 . This is very much a Latergram, but late last year during a trip to Sydney, we were able to set aside a Friday afternoon to venture north of the Harbour Bridge to visit Brookvale for a brewery crawl. The Northern Beaches, and Brookvale particularly, has been a hub for craft breweries since the industry really kicked off a decade or so ago in Sydney, most famously being the original home of @4pinesbeer back when it was still a local indie brewery. The scene has continued to grow over the years, and Brookvale now undoubtedly rivals Marrickville and its surrounds in terms of the craft beer capital of Sydney 🙌 . We started the day at @nomadbrewingco, a Sydney brewing stalwart, and kicked off with their Wrong Coast Bro! West Coast IPA and Red Nectar Red IPA. Nomad is also home to @experienceitbeverages, importer of many international beers for the Australian market, so it was very exciting to find the Myself DDH IPA from Californian superstars @monkishbrewing available to drink on premises. This was a fantastic drop, dank and sticky and fruity 😋 . Next stop was @buckettys, which was one of the most impressive brewery spaces I can recall seeing. Big and bright while still feeling homely and welcoming, the beers were also really good 👌 . From there it was quick stops for a round at each of @freshwater_brewing, @7thdaybrewery, and @dadndavesbrewing All were first visits for us (though we’d been to an earlier iteration of Dad and Dave’s many years ago), and each was worth the time to visit! 😊 . I know there can be a real north / south divide for Sydneysiders, but if you’re on the south side and looking for an excuse to cross the bridge, you could sure do worse than a day out at the Brookvale beer crawl 🍻

Recently transformed a couple of years ago post covid, this pub has had a bit of a glow up. On the bottom floor there’s everything you would need from your local, an outdoor setting with a view of the water, indoor pub bistro style dining, a TAB (nicely tucked away), and a bit of Sunday arvo live music. Tell me: have you ever attended a Zwanze Day event? . As of yesterday, I’ve been to two. Hooray! 🎉 . Zwanze Day is a big day on the (biennial) international beer geek calendar, as @brasseriecantillonofficiel sends out its limited edition Zwanze beer to various select venues worldwide 👌 . Australia was lucky enough to have two Zwanze locations this year, Sydney’s @wildflowerbeer and Perth’s @belgianbeercafewa. For us as east coasters, Wildflower was the more convenient venue, and we were lucky enough to be selected in Wildflower’s raffle to have a spot at the festivities 🙏 . The 2024 Zwanze beer was unique, and quite a departure from the Zwanze norm. According to the Cantillon account, in the context of a collaboration with an abalone farmer named Sylvain in Brittany, where bottles of Gueuze have been submerged in the sea for fermentation with various types of algae being added intermittently for mollusks to feed on, the idea came to try some algae in maceration with Lambic. After some trial and error, it turned out that seaweed (particularly sea lettuce) worked best, and the result is Zwanze 2024 😊 . In speaking to a number of fellow attendees, the Zwanze did seem to be a little controversial, with some mixed reviews. For me, it was an interesting experiment that was enjoyable, even if it perhaps didn’t totally land. There was interesting bright fruit up front, particularly some apricot & plum, but that was followed by briny salinity that sat a little awkwardly. Having said that, after a bit of getting used to it, I quite enjoyed it - while it wasn’t an easy drinker, it was very flavoursome 🤷♀️ . Even if the Zwanze itself wasn’t quite everyone’s cup of tea, there was plenty of other Cantillon beer by the bottle to be shared with friends old and new, as well as Wildflower’s own beer and @mountainculturebeerco Lagers, Pales, IPAs, DIPAs and TIPAs that were very worthy palate cleansers for the day 😋 . A truly fun day on the beer calendar, and a huge shoutout to Topher, @beerisagirlsdrink and the whole team at Wildflower for putting on a wonderful event that was entirely in keeping with the Zwanze spirit 🙌 . Look forward to next Zwanze! 🍻

Earth Beer Company - Fruit Tree Hazy IPA. Cudgen, NSW 🇦🇺 On holiday in the Gold Coast and this is the first local brew I've got my hands on (we are staying close to the NSW border so this brewery is only 14 mins drive). This is a Hazy IPA dry hopped with Citra and Simcoe. Pours a good froth, some retention. Aroma is big, loads of hop fruits with passionfruit and mandarin most notably. Taste wise, those fruits return to the palate with peach and general fruit like sweetness. Slight hop bitterness. Very easy to sip. Mountain Culture Beer Co x Track Brewing - Shimmer. Katoomba, NSW 🇦🇺/ Manchester 🇬🇧 This is collab with Manchester's Tracks Brewing is an Australian Sparkling Ale. A style I have quite the soft spot for. No hops listed. Pours a big froth that dips faster than expected. Aroma is slightly grainy, hints at citrus forward malt and hops within. Taste wise, less character than expected. The malts are fairly subdued with subtle citrus hop notes peering out. Lacks some of the mild yet essential bitterness that I associate with the style. Very crisp and unsurprisingly refreshing.
