Reflecting on a powerful Saturday spent at the International Suicide Survivor Day of Remembrance event in Grand Junction💙 There were several community organizations with resource tables or activities for participants to do during the day. HeartLight had a resource table and offered materials for painting rocks. On Saturday, suicide loss survivors came together to find connection, understanding, and hope through their shared experiences. Our Survivor Day organizers in Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville put together wonderful, thoughtful, unique programs for each location, and each event featured an AFSP-produced documentary offering a message of growth, resilience, and connection.
We spent a wonderful day on Saturday honoring International Survivors of Sucide Loss Day. Connecting with survivors, sharing our experiences and continuing on our unique healing journeys. The term 'Disenfranchised' refers to the act of depriving someone of a particular right or privilege, specifically in this context - the right to grieve. When there's no one to share the grief with, it's common to internalize it. This grief is often caused after suicide, where those who've lost someone feel unable to discuss their pain due to fear of judgment or criticism from society. This suppression of grief can lead to what we term - Disenfranchised Grief. At times, a person's grief may be disenfranchised because their relationship with the individual is perceived as insignificant. Things like “they didn’t even know them” or “they weren’t that close” may suggest that the person's grief is considered disproportionate. This International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day, let's commit to understanding the psychological and emotional impact of losing someone to suicide. Yesterday was International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Every day, sadly many people are coming to terms with the loss of friends and loved ones to suicide. We wanted to share some insightful guidance on ways you can support your loved ones who are grieving. 1. Check In Actively: Reach out to your friends & colleagues and ask how you can help. Be specific in your offers of practical assistance — help with tasks that may have become overwhelming. 2. Attend Occasions: Offer your presence at events like funerals. A simple hug or handshake can convey more comfort than words ever could. 3. Persistence with Patience: Be persistent, but also thoughtful and patient. Those who are grieving may find it challenging to accept help initially, but your support becomes increasingly vital as time passes. 4. Listen Compassionately: Let them share their stories repeatedly. It's a part of their journey to comprehend the unimaginable. 5. Acknowledge Feelings: Accept and acknowledge their feelings, no matter how uncomfortable they may be. Reassure them that their emotions are valid, and be a pillar of support. 6. Mindful Language: Choose language wisely. Instead of ‘committed suicide’, say ‘took their own life’ or ‘died by suicide’. 7. Recognise Difficult Times: Understand that traditionally joyous occasions like birthdays and Christmas can be particularly challenging.
