There is so much potential in our existing suburbs. Concept design number 5 of 2023 is a fine example. It takes a lovely, little, 108 sqm Lyneham house and turns it into a much more functional, 155 sqm family home that can split into *two* residences down the track. Land and building are both very expensive. Where will your kids live? It doesn’t have to be with you forever but what options are there out there? Can you provide a housing option for another group of people on your site? By increasing the number of people living on existing blocks — *through good design* — we can reduce urban sprawl (and traffic!), protect our environment, improve social cohesion and build vibrant suburbs. Win:win:win:winnity win. Good design is the key. Remember, this home is *big* by European standards. We really need to adjust our thinking in Australia. Also note there is still oodles of garden space. Building design and landscape design work together if you are serious about sustainability. Oh, forgot to even mention. The home rates at 7.9⭐️. Don’t believe people who tell you ex-govies can’t be turned into energy efficient homes. I don’t normally post personal things on my business social media channels but for this cause, I need as many people to take action as possible. Our Ontario Government (Doug Ford) and our Minister of Environment (David Piccini) are about to do the UNTHINKABLE. They are planning to take a portion of the Oak Ridges Moraine and turn it into a free-for-all for developers and land prospectors. Throughout their campaigns, they PROMISED to keep the Greenbelt and Oak Ridges Moraine safe. They’ll disguise it with fluffy stories about the “housing crisis” (no where in their proposal does it indicate anything for affordable housing). They’ll say they’ll give back/swap other land which means those additions would not mitigate the net loss of protected lands. Even more importantly, the government’s plans would utterly destroy the certainty of permanent protection that is vital to the functioning of the Greenbelt as a whole. We need to take ACTION and we need to do it NOW. Mother Nature is swallowing this home whole. The former owner passed in 2010 after battling a long illness. She was a History Professor at MTSU, a member of a book club but most ironically she was on the Rutherford County Commission for Beautification. How tragic is it that the home of a woman who cared so much for her community sits and rots until land developers level it for a box store. This whole farm area is now just dense housing and strip malls. We found photos of kids making core memories in swings when this home was new. Why would they let their childhood home just go like this? Have they no shame? No sense of pride? Last official day at #reedycreek! It was full of frogs, tadpoles, snakeskins, and sunshine with a side a side of devastation as a HUGE suburb is being built within the watershed which led to me crying 😭 The #reedycreekrestoration project has been my baby for the last 4 years and it is terribly disappointing to see an awful suburb with no regard for the ecosystem being added to such an amazing place! Built in 1913 and remodeled in 1945 (that bathroom!!!) this was the home of Edna and Tom Barrett. Edna passed in her home in 2011 (I cannot confirm nor deny that the home she took her last breath in was this one but it would make the most sense). I do know that Mrs.Barrett must have loved flowers as there were some beautiful Irises planted in the front and lady bugs everywhere. Sadly this is one of 3 abandoned homes in this area. One of the others that is recently abandoned still has inviting rocking chairs on the front porch that overlooks a meadow. Most of this area has been re-zoned commercial. The lush open spaces and charming older homes will be replaced by large white warehouses. Such a shame. Land developers have a nasty habit of being akin to pests that ravage anything and everything for their gain and Marymont is a prime example of this. ParkTrust development was even honored by the city for their preservation of this historic home. All they really did was apply a half ass lipstick reno to the bottom floor, leaving the burn scars and soot on the second level from a 2004 fire that decimated the beautiful 2 story porch. ParkTrust had the cash, materials and crew to fix up this historic home. Instead they used her for their selfish goals and threw her away like trash when the subdivision was completed. Cities and Developers need to be held accountable. If they are going to build on historic farms then they must be legally obligated to restore any historic buildings as museums and community centers.
