This Saturday, May 18, at 1:00 p.m. there will be a Guest Speaker at the Town of Shenandoah Museum: Robert Moore II (507 First Street, Shenandoah, VA 22849). A native of Page County, Robert Moore is perhaps best known locally for his long-running Heritage & Heraldry column (1997-2010) for the Page News & Courier and published works about Page County, to include Tragedy in the Shenandoah Valley. Since 2019, he has embarked on a study of ancestry as interpreted through DNA, and most especially Y DNA. He is currently administrator and co-administrator of several online Y DNA projects, and travels annually to sites in Europe pursuing the backstory to findings in ancient DNA. Millers Head Trail Shenandoah National Park, Virginia 1.96 miles 393 ft Elevation Gain This hike wasn’t hard, nor was it long, but the view was AMAZING! The trail was a little confusing to get to. I parked at the amphitheater and walked across the way. Once I found the trailhead it was smooth sailing. Only a little elevation around the halfway mark, but it’s not anything crazy. The lookout used to be where a fire tower was, so you can see a whole panorama of the valley below. I had the view all to myself so I sat for a while taking it all in. The trail was also lined with a lot of wildflowers too! A bit of the evolution of my arrangement of Shenandoah for the Penelope album launch tomorrow… The album version was an improvised solo arrangement done in one take as I really wanted to include this song, but there was no time left to record. I wanted to scale this up for the full 12-piece Grande Família for the album launch @pizzaexpresslive but found myself copying the Paul Robeson version, which I love, too closely. The aurora came out briefly last night. When I arrived, it was rainy and completely foggy. I decided to wait as it was supposed to clear in about the next hour. Right around midnight, an intense thunderstorm rolled through. The car was shaking from the window, the rain was pelting down, and there was a flash of lightning. Just after the storm passed, the aurora started dancing on the horizon. It lasted for about 10 minutes before it started to fade.

One of the greatest experiences. The aurora borealis (northern lights). Now I know this is the not the greatest image but it’s one of my all time favorites. It started Friday morning when I first heard there was an opportunity to see the Northern Lights down here in VA. I immediately knew I was going to go out and photograph it that evening. At around 7:00pm, I was checking the weather forecast and it didn’t appear they would be visible in our area due to the clouds/weather. So I decided not to go. At 10:30pm, I was scrolling FB and saw several photographers have success photographing the Northern Lights. Gabi Ondrish said go as this could be a great opportunity to photograph it. So after having just toke a Benadryl, I drove to Shenandoah NP and arrived around 12:30am to be socked in by the clouds. The clouds were so low that the lights of luray were not even visible at some points. I ended up staying until 4:30am hoping the clouds would break apart but they never did. I drove home disappointed especially after seeing everyone’s amazing images. Well Saturday night my wife was like, let’s take the girls and go try and see the Northern Lights again. So we packed the girls up with jackets and blankets and headed back to Shenandoah NP. Neighbor Mountain Shenandoah National Park 5.48 miles 986 ft Elevation Gain Another hike for Day 2, Neighbor Mountain! I felt like I was back in the pine barrens with all the charred trees that still smelled like they were burning. I’m not sure if there was a forest fire recently, or if they even do controlled burns in the park, but it made for an interesting twist of scenery on this hike. There was a small viewpoint towards the end, but again, not a grand summit view. I uploaded a couple more videos to YouTube. Fly-fishing videos from Montana and Utah. Lots more to come....just have to sift through the hours of zero action on the river, haha. I decided to take a detour on a Virginia back road because why not, and I passed a house with the sign you see "Peonies Pick Your Own". I felt like Ray from Trailer Park Boys when he saw the sign for Hot Hamburger Sandwiches (IFYKYK). I pulled on in and talked to the owner for quite a while. He shared with me some peony knowledge and let me go picking. Perfect timing for Mothers Day. I continued on into Washington, Va and that town is beautiful. I talked with a woman who owns an art studio there. I showed her the Mustang and camper photo (thanks @luxxlenss ), and then she shared her cross-country road trip story. Oddly enough, I didn’t take a ton of photos. Maybe because I was so busy taking some 28k steps… some very challenging. Maybe it’s because I got to spend 6 hours having great conversation with an old friend. Or maybe it’s because my dedication to my hydration resulted in so many off path bathroom spots 🫣 It was my first time hiking old rag. I’m super grateful to my friend @shaaags for being my guide and support. We had a perfect day until the last 30 minutes where Mother Nature tried to drown us over the last mile. Hahah!
